Cyprus travelogue.
Aerial shots of the Cyprus coast, Kyrenia harbour and St. Hilarion. M/S of blue sea washing against the shore. A young woman in yellow bikini walks out of the sea onto a very secluded beach and dries herself with a towel. The narrator refers to Cyprus as Aphrodite's island in reference to its beauty and tranquility.
More aerial shots over ancient Cyprus. Visible is an old amphitheatre and large pillars. M/S of a statue with no head. This is the ancient city of Salamis. Various shots of local woman (Archaeologists) digging sand. We are told that they are looking for a hidden city. M/S of small train going up hill.
In Nicosia the capital we see a M/S of a man hitting a copper plate with a hammer which the narrator tells us is like ...their ancestors used to do. L/S's of Nicosia street (known as murder mile). M/S of car driving down very sandy roads. The camera pans right to reveal an old man in turban leading a camel behind him.

Oil is scooped from this well by ladle and poured into an urn. Women work in an orange grove. C/U of women picking oranges. They are wearing large white head scarves. Mulberry trees. Silk factory. Interior of factory with large pile of cocoons. Woman brings cooked loaves of bread out of an outdoor oven. Narrator speaks of the simple life led by these people. Women operate large weaving looms in the open air. C/U of woman at loom - prickly pear plant in the background. The village potter makes jars in an open air workshop. Camels are led past the doorway. C/U of potters hands as he throws pots and of his feet operating the potters wheel. Glaze is applied in the open air.

Catacomb of Phaneromeni Church, Larnaca
The small Panagia Phaneromeni Church is located on the busy thoroughfare of Phaneromeni Avenue (named after the church), and dates back to the early 20th century. It is devoted to the Virgin Mary and replaces a Medieval church on the same spot, whilst a cave underneath served as an early Christian church and was originally a royal monolithic tomb of the town’s prehistoric times – believed to most likely be Mycenaean Greek. Today, a larger, modern church sits beside the older one and was constructed to serve the expanding community of the parish.
The small church and its cave are credited with various magical properties; those who suffer from headaches or other diseases walk three times around the church and leave a piece of clothing or a tuft of their hair in the belief that they will be healed. The church is also visited by women whose partners are overseas, with the belief that prayers given for their safety will ensure it.

Our Lady of Love, Vavla (Cyprus Aerial Video)
A small chapel on the north of the village of Vavla is dedicated to Panagia tis Agapis (Our Lady of Love). It is the only church in Cyprus as well as in the entire world that exists with this name.

Church of Angeloktisti
The Church of the Virgin Mary Angeloktisti, meaning ‘built by the angels’, was built on the ruins of a Church built in the 5th century, acquiring its current state in the 11th century and world-known for its magnificent mosaics from the 6th century. Their beauty has been compared to those of the Church of St. Vitaly in the Italian Ravene and St. Sophia in Constantinople, in total the number of mosaics of this kind remaining in the world is seven (two of which are in Cyprus). In the dim light of the altar you can see one of the most ancient images of the Virgin Mary with Child Christ in her arms. The Archangels are also depicted following the best traditions of Hellenistic art. A small number of the wallpaintings that dating to the mid-13th century have survived. The fresco depicting the image of John the Baptist is the only wall painting that is not just a fragment but has survived almost compeletely. Also particularly interesting are the magnificent icons dating back to the 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th centuries, amongst which are the icons in the adjoining Chapels built in the 12th and 13th centuries.

Cyprus: Cultivate the Talent of Peace
The International Meeting of Prayer for Peace in Cyprus promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio began with a Eucharistic celebration in the Holy Cross Catholic Church of Nicosia, presided over by Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. The meeting is entitled A Civilization of Peace. Faiths and Cultures in Dialogue and will conclude on Tuesday, November 18. Representatives of Christians Churches and Ecclesial Communities attended the Eucharistic celebration. In his homily, Cardinal Sandri underlined that hospitality, patience and hope are the sure ways of cultivating the true talent of religions and recalled that all religions are an extraordinary vital force for humanity as long as each religion is open to truth. Finally, the Prefect of the Oriental Churches said that Christianity is a gift for Europe and for the world given that it aims toward the development of each man and woman in their historical and eternal vocation. Ο Μακαριώτατος Αρχιεπίσκοπος Μακάριος γεννήθηκε στο χωριό Παναγιά της επαρχίας Πάφου στην Κύπρο, στις 13 Αυγούστου 1913. Το κοσμικό του όνομα ήταν Μιχαήλ Χριστοδούλου Μούσκος. Πέθανε στις 3 Αυγούστου 1977 στη Λευκωσία.
Ο Μακάριος ήταν αρχιεπίσκοπος της αυτοκέφαλης ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας της Κύπρου από το 1950 μέχρι το θάνατο του και ο πρώτος πρόεδρος της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας από τις 16 Αυγούστου 1960 μέχρι το θάνατο του στις 3 Αυγούστου 1977.
His Beatitude Archbishop Makarios was born in the village of Panagia in the province of Paphos in Cyprus on 13 August 1913. His secular name was Michael Christodoulou Mouskos. He died on August 3, 1977 in Nicosia.
Makarios was archbishop of the autocratic Orthodox Church of Cyprus from 1950 until his death and the first President of the Republic of Cyprus from 16 August 1960 until his death on 3 August 1977.
