Romania: Cathedral of National Redemption's consecration draws tens of thousands
The Cathedral of National Redemption was consecrated after eight years of construction works in Bucharest on Sunday, before an estimated 40,000 worshipers.
SOT, Ionut, worshiper (Romanian): For me, the cathedral consecration is a once in a lifetime event, for at least our lifetimes, our generation, and we come here filled with joy to this wonderful consecration service. We thank God that the weather is on our side, more or less.
SOT, Worshiper (Romanian): Now, exactly 100 years after millions of Romanians sacrificed their lives, with faith in God, if they hadn't had their faith they never would have laid down their lives, so that Romania can be great, now, one hundred years later, a cathedral is being built, dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord, also the Heroes' Commemoration Day. I am convinced that they, from up there, at God's side, in Heaven, are now rejoicing. All the soldiers, all the rulers of the old days, people of faith, are rejoicing at the same time with us, because this people was finally able to build a cathedral for itself, to match its strong and true belief.

Francis arrives for ceremony to beatify martyrs
(2 Jun 2019) Pope Francis was on Sunday paying homage to Catholics who were persecuted, tortured and killed during Romania's communist regime as he beatifies seven bishop martyrs on his third and final day in the country.
Francis began presiding over the beatification ceremony Sunday in Blaj, a stronghold of the Greek-Catholic church that was outlawed during communism.
The seven bishops had been arrested and imprisoned between 1950 and 1970 for adhering to their faith.
The Mass is being celebrated on the symbolic Field of Liberty, a huge expanse east of Blaj that was the site of an important nationalist rally in 1848.
A century later, communist leaders marking the anniversary at the field demanded that Greek-Catholics join the Orthodox church.

With the fall of Ceausescu and the Communist regime, the Catholic Church in Romania has been confronted with two significant challenges: Responding to those poor and unemployed, unable to keep up with the economic reforms, as they confront the new harsh realities of poverty thrust upon them and secondly, the lack of structures with which to provide the necessary shelter and care with the slow return of the Catholic Churches and property.
This short film considers the typical life and work of a Catholic parish, the Monastur Parish, and its efforts to provide social and pastoral care in the new Romania.
Churches in Romania
86.5% of the Romanians have declared themselves Orthodox Christians, in the latest census. What's the sound of an Orthodox mass in Romania, in a centuries-old monastery with World Heritage frescoes in the region of Bukovina, in a district church, in the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest or in a small wooden church in Maramures County?

Faithful gather in Blaj for beatification ceremony
(2 Jun 2019) Catholic faithful started gathering early on Sunday in Blaj, Romania, waiting for the arrival of Pope Francis.
The pontiff was due to pay homage to Catholics who were persecuted, tortured and killed during Romania's communist regime as he beatifies seven bishop martyrs on his third and final day in the country.
Francis will preside over the beatification ceremony in Blaj, a stronghold of the Greek-Catholic church that was outlawed during communism.
The seven bishops had been arrested and imprisoned between 1950 and 1970 for adhering to their faith.
Francis is expected to hold them up as models for the Romanian faithful today.
The ceremony is being held on the symbolic Field of Liberty, a huge expanse east of Blaj that was the site of an important nationalist rally in 1848.
A century later, communist leaders marking the anniversary at the field demanded that Greek-Catholics join the Orthodox church.

Faithful wait for Pope Francis' mass in Bucharest
(31 May 2019) Several hundred Catholics gathered to wait for Pope Francis outside St. Joseph Catholic Cathedral in Bucharest on Friday, as the pontiff began a three-day pilgrimage to Romania.
Some of the faithful waiting remembered when John Paul II visited twenty years ago.
They were particularly emotional about being able to see another pope visiting their country.
Standing outside the cathedral where a live broadcast of the mass was set up, Adam Carol, a resident in Bucharest, said I came here with great joy and pleasure to be near the Holy See.
The pontiff's trip is in many ways completing the 1999 trip by St. John Paul II , which marked the first-ever papal visit to a majority Orthodox country.
Key moments during Francis' trip are his mass for the largely Hungarian-speaking Roman Catholic faithful at the country's most famous Marian shrine, Sumuleu Ciuc, in eastern Transylvania.
He will also beatify seven Greek-Catholic bishops who were martyred during communist rule, when Catholics were brutally persecuted.
Francis also met Friday with the leadership of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the latest of his foreign trips to poor countries where Catholics are a minority.
In Romania, they are a divided minority between two Catholic rites, Roman Catholic and Greek-Catholic.
