Saint Lazarus Church - Cyprus Larnaca [HD]
The Church is named after the New Testament friend of Jesus whom he rose from the dead which is recounted in the Gospel of St John 11:41-44 that is Lazarus of Bethany.
Naturally, the miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus aroused the Jews and the High Priests planned to put Lazarus to death (John XII 9-11), as he constituted living evidence of the miracle.
Therefore the banished saint fled to the island of Cyprus where he encountered the apostles Paul and Barnabas and was ordained as the first Bishop of Citium (Present day Larnaca) as the first Bishop of Cyprus.
He is said to have lived for thirty more years and on his death was buried there for the second and last time.

The Church of Saint Lazarus is named for New Testament figure Lazarus of Bethany, the subject of a miracle recounted in the Gospel of John,in which Jesus raises him from the dead. According to Orthodox tradition, sometime after the Resurrection of Christ, Lazarus was forced to flee Judea because of rumoured plots on his life and came to Cyprus. There he was appointed by Paul and Barnabas as the first Bishop of Kittim (present-day Larnaca). He is said to have lived for thirty more years and on his death was buried there for the second and last time. The Church of Ayios Lazaros was built over the reputed (second) tomb of Lazarus.
Tradition says that the place of Lazarus' tomb was lost during the period of Arab rule beginning in 649. In 890, a tomb was found in Larnaca bearing the inscription Lazarus the friend of Christ. Emperor Leo VI of Byzantium had Lazarus' remains transferred to Constantinople in 898. The transfer was apostrophized by Arethas, Bishop of Caesarea, and is commemorated by the Orthodox Church each year on October 17.
In recompense to Larnaca, Emperor Leo had the Church of St. Lazarus erected over Lazarus' tomb in the late 9th to early 10th centuries. It is one of three Byzantine churches, which have survived in Cyprus; the other two are the Church of the Apostle Barnabas near Salamis, and the church that was built in the walkway leading from the Epiphanios to the font. The relics were later stolen from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade in 1204 and transferred to France as part of the spoils of war.

Kýpros IPA:; Turkish: Kıbrıs IPA: [ˈkɯbɾɯs]), officially the Republic of Cyprus (Greek: Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία, translit. Kypriakí Demokratía; Turkish: Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti), is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean and the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean. It is located south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel and Palestine, north of Egypt, and southeast of Greece.
The earliest known human activity on the island dates to around the 10th millennium BC. Archaeological remains from this period include the well-preserved Neolithic village of Khirokitia, and
Cyprus is a small island with a long history and a rich culture that spans 10000 years, making it one of the oldest civilisations in the Mediterranean.
Cyprus is home to some of the oldest water wells in the world.Cyprus was settled by Mycenaean Greeks in two waves in the 2nd millennium BC. As a strategic location in the Middle East, it was subsequently occupied by several major powers, including the empires of the Assyrians, Egyptians and Persians, from whom the island was seized in 333 BC by Alexander the Great. Subsequent rule by Ptolemaic Egypt, the Classical and Eastern Roman Empire, Arab caliphates for a short period, the French Lusignan dynasty and the Venetians, was followed by over three centuries of Ottoman rule between 1571 and 1878 (de jure until 1914).
Nicosia (/ˌnɪkəˈsiːə/ nik-ə-see-ə; Greek: Λευκωσία [lefkoˈsi.a]; Turkish: Lefkoşa [lefˈkoʃa]) is the largest city on the island of Cyprus. It is located near the centre of the Mesaoria plain, on the banks of the River Pedieos.
Nicosia is the capital and seat of government of the Republic of Cyprus, and as such is the farthest southeast of all EU member states' capitals. It has been continuously inhabited for over 4,500 years and has been the capital of Cyprus since the 10th century. The Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities of Nicosia segregated into the south and north of the city respectively in 1963, following the intercommunal violence that broke out in the city. This division became a militarized border between the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus after Turkey invaded the island of Cyprus in 1974, occupying the north of the island, including northern Nicosia. Today, the northern part of the city is the capital of Northern Cyprus, a state recognized only by Turkey that is considered to be occupied Cypriot territory by the international community.
Limassol is the second largest town in Cyprus after Nicosia, with a population of approximately 200 000. Apart from being a major tourist destination, it is also a principal hub for international business in Cyprus. This gives Limassol a more cosmopolitan feel compared to other district centers. Recent renovation projects in the old town and old port area are seeking to rejuvenate the historic center, making it more accessible and interesting for sightseeing. donald fox news gop msnbc live cnn
The history of Saint Lazarus in Larnaca, Cyprus - built on the site of Lazarus' Second Tomb
The story of Saint Lazarus (Άγιος Λάζαρος, or San Lazaro) is known amongst tourists and visitors to Cyprus. He was resurrected by Jesus in the last of the signs presented in the Gospel of St John. Jesus ordered him to come out of his tomb and Lazarus walked out. What is less well known, and many tourists may miss, is that Lazarus’ second tomb was discovered on the Island of Cyprus in 890AD.
About –
The Church of St Lazarus is built on one of the holiest sites in the Middle East, a church that was built on the site of Lazarus' tomb in 898AD. This is a church that has had a turbulent existence. Built on the command of a Roman emperor, it was not to remain undisturbed for long. It has variously been a Benedictine monastery and a mosque. It has suffered the devastation of the Ottoman Turks who flattened its domes, and its belfry was rebuilt by the citizenry of Larnaca.
Finally, in 1972 during restoration work to the foundations, Lazarus’ tomb was rediscovered and some of the remains of Saint Lazarus were discovered. It is one of the places that you must visit if you go to a pilgrimage to Cyprus, or even for a short visit to Larnaca.
The square around the temple is filled with cafés and restaurants, and you can complement your visit with local delicacies or international cuisine.
