Limassol, Agios Nikolaos monastery, Cyprus
Agios Nikolaos Ton Gaton monastery and convent, Limassol - Cape Gata, Cyprus , 2010 - St.Nicholas of the Cats
Situated on Cape Gata south east of Akrotiri Salt Lake near Lemesos (Limassol), Agios Nikolaos ton Gaton (St Nicholas of the Cats) is perhaps the first monastery in Cyprus. The present church probably dates to the late 14th century. Abandoned in the late 16th century, it was re-occupied by Orthodox nuns in the early 1980s. According to tradition, the monastery was founded in the 4th century by Agia Eleni, mother of Constantine the Great, who left a piece of wood from the Holy Cross there.
CYPRUS: Agios Neophytos Monastery [HD]
Agios Neophytos Monastery lies 10 km outside Paphos, near Tala village. Agios (means Saint) Neophytos was the founder of the monastery in 1159. He lived there (from 1170) and died in 1219 at the age of 85. He is considered to be one of the most significant figures of the Church of Cyprus.
Inside the Engleistra (place of seclusion near the monastery) Saint Neophytos led a hermit’s life until 1170. The Engleistra was initially a natural cave on the eastern side of a hill’s slope, and was carved into a place of seclusion by St. Neophytos. It consisted of two areas. One area was a small chapel dedicated to Timios Stavros ( Holy Cross) and the other was the Saint’s cell, in which he also carved his tomb.
A famous painter, Theodoros Apsevdis, undertook to paint the frescoes in the Engleistra. You can also can see Byzantine icons of exceptional artistic quality in the main church of the monastery. Or in the museum of the monastery, which has exhibits from both the ancient period and Byzantine period.
The main church of the monastery was built around 200 years after the death of St. Neophytos and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Agios Nikolaos Alassa Limassol Cyprus
A special kind of church is in Alassa in Limassol Region. The church is dedicated to Agios Nicolaos and was built on 1936. The speciality of this church is that is submerged in the waters of Kourris lake. It’s visible only few times a year when the level of the lake is low. When the Kourris reservoir overflows, the only thing visible of the church is its belfry, which creates a unique and majestic image.
Most part of Alassa village is submerged in the Kourris reservoir, the biggest reservoir in Cyprus. The village residents moved in higher grounds, north of the initial settlement location. With the submerged village, a hidden treasure of antiquities and legends are sank with it.
The Antiquities Department commenced an excavation on site. A house of 5th century AC (Late Roman Period) and the ruins of a big settlement of the Late Copper Age (1650 – 1050 AC). The settlement resembles many common features like brass tools and idols made of clay, with the Pampoulas Settlement in Episkopi of Limassol.

Kannoures Nature Trail - Kakopetria - Troodos - Nicosia - Limassol - Cyprus Part I.
Pretty much awesome trail very well marked at every point. Difficulties comes from some river cross and pass small gorges made by rain water to reach river. Long and tough to go always uphill. Most people go down hill only , that is much easier.
My route is different at several points than just walk thru on nature trail.
I did visit Chromium mine , you can expect difficulties to reach the mine, due huge rock falling and from leave the mine , due river did ruin the path there.
I did it uphill and back much more tough than just go down.
I did use my 4x4 car on forestry road and mark to you where you can park safely.
I did visit the neighbor valley at an easy viewpoint when you can get out from river valley, go for it ! scenery is breathtaking.
Study weather forecast before go, on rainy winter days it can be dangerous !
