Adventures Ashore: Camogli, San Fruttuoso & Portofino
We stepped on board a comfortable boat for a half-day tour roundtrip Santa Margherita. Cruising along the coastline of the Italian Riviera, we saw Portofino from another perspective, its backside. I could tell already that we were in for an extremely picturesque day.
Our first stop was in the tiny Bay of San Fruttuoso. The bay is famous for its 10th-century abbey. There are only two ways to get here, by hiking or by boat. San Fruttuoso’s seclusion is appealing and we stayed in the bay for about 10 minutes to admire the natural setting.
Next stop, Comogli. The architecture of the city is simply stunning. It resembles a quiet fishing village mixed with a Mediterranean resort.
It’s said that Camogli comes from the shortened case delle mogli (“house of wives”), having derived its name from the women who watched over the town while their husbands were away at sea.
Camogli's original medieval setting was centered around the local parish church, located on an island that was completely detached from the mainland. Today, this island is connected to the mainland by a little square surrounded by colorful buildings and one of the most beautiful Baroque churches along the Italian coastline. I loved buildings facing the sea, painted in the muted pinks, yellows, and terra-cottas, suitable for a postcard or at least Instagram.
Our next stop was Portofino. The town is clustered around the tiny harbor. It’s hard to imagine that there is a traveler alive who hasn’t seen the colorful buildings depicted in photographs of Portofino. It’s one of Italy’s most iconic seaside towns, which explains why Portofino is a popular destination for celebrities and travelers alike. You can hike all the way up to Brown Castle, where you can tour the grounds for a fee, or spend your time at the waterfront having a glass of wine and admiring the harbor
I hiked up to the church of San Giorgio. Though there were a lot of stairs, and the path continued up and up and up. But it was worth the effort to see the beautiful church. As an added bonus, the church terrace provided a gorgeous panorama over the harbor and tiny Portofino down below.

The upper part of Modica is home to the magnificent baroque Church of San Giorgio.
This golden 18th century church stands tall over the town, and visitors need to ascend 250 steps to reach it.

Portofino: Live from the luxury Ligurian Resort
Portofino has luxury designer shops and big boats - Cinque Terre it's not!
Here we are in Portofino where the clouds have parted - yes, it was pretty cloudy - and we've got a spot of sunlight, so I've taken the chance to climb up to the church (Chiesa di San Giorgio) to get an overview of the harbour. As you can see, there are plenty of small boats in at the moment...
This is not known as a luxury place for nothing. If you look at some of the shots in the gallery, you'll see Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Dior, all small shops running alongside the harbour. Not quite the run-of-the-mill shops we've been used to in Cinque Terre, for example.
And down here, if I zoom in, you can see, guarded by a rhinoceros - yes, rhinoceros - a sculpture garden. Pink meercats they look like, but your guess is as good as mine, and they seem to be guarding the sculpture garden. I don't know anything else about it at the moment, I'm sorry about that, but there we are. (Ed: It's the Museo del Parco with about 120 sculptures by international artists.)
So, let's look at the place itself. Actually I really like it, we're here quite early in the morning and it's very peaceful and it's not so gaudy as the other places along the coast, like for example, Monterosso. Maybe an indication of that is the size of the boats and the character of the shops as you walk down the main street.
But it's really very attractive along here. We just drove along from Santa Margherita Ligure, which is sort of the next big town along and the whole of the hillside is actually covered with Umbertino-like villas. It's quite extraordinary, like an out-take from the Garden of the Finzi-Continis.
I'm not sure if I can get one (of the mansions) - this one here, for example, is absolutely typical of those that you see along this coast. Yes, amazing, really. Certainly very elegant and although the weather's not been brilliant for us, I'm sure it makes a nice contrast if you have the money to afford it.
I'm told that a coffee at the cafe where Ava Gardner sat in the Barefoot Contessa would cost you about 5 Euros, but as it's closed at the moment, I can't tell you exactly. Obviously people here are used to sensibly getting up a little later.
Okay, well I'm going to wander down, by the way, it wasn't a big hike up here so you might like to try it yourself.
