멀리 노란 전차가 들어온다. 봉징요라고 부르는 이 시가전차는 산타 테레자의 풍광과 잘 어울린다. 선뜻 봉징요에 올라탔다. 마치 사라져가는 협궤열차처럼 봉징요에는 낭만이 풍긴다. 봉징요를 타고 떠나는 산타 테레자 여행. 가파른 언덕을 생각보다 힘들이지 않고 올라간다. 승객은 언제나 만원으로 무임승차한 채 전차 옆에 매달려 가는 것도 아주 흔한 풍경이다. 좁은 거리는 예전 그대로지만 늘어나는 차들로 봉징요를 운전하는 것이 만만치만은 않다. 잘못 주차된 차들 때문에 봉징요가 멈춰 섰다. 이럴 땐 승객들도 한마음이다. 여럿이 힘을 모으니 차가 들려진다. 전차가 다시 출발한다. 주차된 차들 옆을 아슬아슬하게 빠져나가려 하지만 백미러 부서지는 소리가 유난히 크게 들린다. 누구 차인지 모르지만 오늘 운수 없는 날이다. 작은 사고쯤은 아랑곳하지 않고 봉징요는 길을 떠난다 하지만 그것도 잠시. 과연 이번에는 잘 빠져나갈 수 있을까? 아슬아슬하니 주먹 하나 차이로 간신히 빠져나간다. 이제 본격적으로 속도를 내며 봉징요가 달린다. 봉징요는 두 개의 노선으로 산타테레자를 돈다. 어느 노선이던지 봉징요에서 보는 산타 테레자의 풍경은 리우 시민들의 정겨움이 묻어난다. 봉징요는 30분에 한 대 꼴로 운행되기 때문에 한 번 놓치면 만만찮은 시간을 기다려야 한다. 하루 승객은 족히 3천 명 정도 대부분이 관광객들이다.

A Escadaria Selaron liga o Largo da Lapa à parte do bairro de Santa Teresa próxima ao convento de Sta Teresa. Decorada com inúmeros azulejos por um artista plástico, se tornou um ponto turístico do Rio de Janeiro atraindo inúmeros visitantes. O vídeo mostra os painéis feitos com azulejos de várias partes do Brasil e do Mundo.
A escaria é na verdade uma rua de acesso ao bairro de Santa Teresa, chamada Rua Manuel Carneiro, com casas de ambos os lados, rua esta tão inclinada que somente é possível a circulação de pedestres.
O trabalho artístico de revestimento de uma escadaria totalmente sem atrativos, foi feito por um artista plastico chileno, radicado no Brasil de longa data.
O artista que era pintor e ceramista, morava e tinha seu atelier ou studio na mesma ladeira da escadaria.
Jorge Selaron, este era seu nome, mudou-se para o local por volta de 1990, e também por volta de 1994 decidiu fixar azulejos nos degrais da escada, mais precisamente nos espelhos ou parte vertical ou perpendicalar aos patamares dos degraus.
Além dos degrais, Selaron revestiu também várias muretas e muros de casas que se estendem ao longo da escada, assim com rampas muito inclinadas que existem em vários pontos da ingreme ladeira.
Algumas banheiras antigas também foram colocadas em alguns pontos da escadaria, sendo que estas servem como canteiros de plantas.
