STORYLINE
One of Brazil's most famous priests has inaugurated a massive new Roman Catholic church that will hold about 20-thousand worshippers when complete.
A mass was celebrated Friday in Sao Paulo to inaugurate the Mother of God sanctuary.
It's estimated at least ten thousand worshippers gathered at the church on Friday, with more queuing outside.
It's been in construction for more than six years, and it will take several more to finish.
Father Marcelo Rossi is the driving force behind the project.
He's a Latin Grammy-nominated Christian music singer and author of best-selling books in Brazil.
There has been a rapid spread of evangelical churches in Brazil, which has more Catholics than any other nation.

STORYLINE:
Brazilians in Sao Paulo attended mass and prayed for Pope John Paul II on Sunday.
Dom Claudio Hummes, the Sao Paulo Archbishop - considered a strong contender for the pontiff's appointment - suffered a cold on Sunday, and his doctor told him to stay at home, according to his press officer.
Instead, Sunday mass was celebrated by Dom Benedito Beni dos Santos, the second authority at Sao Paulo State Catholic Church.
Politicians and officials attended the mass - among them, the Sao Paulo State Governor, Geraldo Alkimin and the Sao Paulo City Mayor, Jose Serra.
Monsignor Severino Martins said people should thank God for the gift of having Pope John Paul II as the leader of the church for 26 years.
Many people brought pictures of Pope John Paul II to the mass.
Leaders of other religions also attended the mass.
During his speech, Dom Benedito Beni dos Santos spoke about the legacy of the Pope.

One of the 31 new Cardinals appointed by Pope John Paul II last Sunday, Rio de Janeiro Archbishop Dom Eusebio Oscar Scheid, celebrated a special mass on Friday.
Scheid, who has headed the Rio archdiocese since 2001, is now part of the group that will choose the successor to the frail pope.
Next week, he will travel to Rome to join other new princes of the church that include senior Vatican officials and diocesan leaders from 20 countries.
They will receive their red hats at a ceremony known as a 'consistory' on October 21 - a date chosen to coincide with the weeklong celebrations marking John Paul's 25th anniversary as pope.
In a exclusive interview with APTN, the newly appointed Cardinal said Pope John Paul II´s papacy was one of the richest in living memory, in terms of reaching out to other faiths.
He said he thought the only blemish on John Paul II's otherwise sterling papacy was his failure to convince US President George W. Bush not to go war with Iraq.

DIA DA CIDADANIA NO RESIDENCIAL MARTANI
Prefeitura promoveu edição do 'Dia da Cidadania' no Martani
A Prefeitura de Catanduva realizou mais uma edição do Dia da Cidadania. Desta vez, a atração, recheada com serviços gratuitos à comunidade, foi realizada no Jardim Martani, na Praça José Luiz de Almeida, ao lado da escola municipal Prof.ª Maria Aparecida Colturato Fernandes.
Os principais serviços ficaram por conta da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde, que levou à praça orientações de combate à dengue, atendimentos à população e distribuição de preservativos. O curso de enfermagem das Faculdades Integradas Padre Albino (Fipa) realizou aferições de pressão arterial.
Para a criançada, a Prefeitura levou equipes da Secretaria de Esporte, Lazer e Turismo, que realizaram brincadeiras com bexigas e pintura de rosto. Também houve uma cama elástica para divertir a garotada.
Também foram oferecidos cortes de cabelo, aos cuidados da equipe de Vasco e Júnior, e feitas doações de mudas de árvores pela Secretaria de Meio Ambiente e Agricultura. Todas as atividades aconteceram no domingo dia 10 de abril, das 9 às 13 horas.

A Secretaria Municipal de Cultura foi responsável pelas apresentações artísticas, com os bailarinos do Primeira Impressão e do Grupo Versátile, e com shows dos grupos de Axé, de Dança de Salão Fênix e de Dança do Ventre Feitiço Árabe.
Inaugurações
O Dia da Cidadania marcou a inauguração de duas praças: a José Luiz de Almeida, localizada na rua Geraldo Zirondi - que tem como diferencial as pontes de madeira, construídas para a travessia sobre as águas pluviais - e o Sistema de Lazer Dr. Vicente Bucchianeri, situado no cruzamento das ruas Cotia e Bocaina.
Também foram entregues à comunidade três novos veículos adquiridos pela Secretaria Municipal de Saúde.

O evento tem apoio da Associação de Moradores do Bairro Jardim Martani, que levou parceiros e realizou sorteios de brindes à comunidade após o evento.

Cardinal Majella Agnelo: Brazil faces same issues as Europe

Brazil has the largest Catholic community in the world. The country has a population of 195 million, out of which 162 million are Catholics.
