In the northeastern part of Ano Polis of Thessaloniki on Eptapyrgiou Street 64, in rocky and steep terrain, there is built the monastery of Vlatadon the only one of the numerous Byzantine monasteries of the city that has survived until today, still even in use. The foundation of the monastery - which is stavropegic, that means it belongs to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople -is placed immediately after the mid-14th century. The owners were the brothers Mark and Dorotheos Vlatis, monks with great education and deep Christian faith, students and friends of St. Gregory Palamas. The monastery was dedicated to Christ Pantocrator and today it celebrates at the feast of Metamorphosis (6 August).During the Ottoman occupation, it came for a short time to the Turks and was converted into a muslim mosque, but relatively quickly its original use was restored. In 1446, with a firman of the Sultan, the monastery received special privileges, while inside and outside of Thessaloniki it acquired over time dependencies (Panagia Lagoudiani, Agios Nikolaos the Orfanos, Agios Athanasios), which certifies its financial well-being and its great strength.
The catholic of Vlatadon monastery, the only building that remained from the monastery complex of the 14th century, is a cruciform church with octagonal brick dome in the center and a closed arcade in western, southern and northern side,which in the east ends in two chapels. It should be noted that the north chapel, the north and western part of the arcade, as well as a small part of the south arcade, are later structures, probably of 1801. Moreover, in 1907 there was added an open arcade on the south side and a small porch on the west side. Inside the church, there are murals dating from between 1360 and 1380. It is a serene painting with slender figures characterized by restrained passion and elegant movements. In the vestry of the monastery there are kept many and remarkable icons dating from the 12th to the 19th century, holy relics, precious remains and a large collection of manuscripts and documents, including imperial golden bulls, patriarchal sigils and Turkish firmans. The monastery’s catholic is surrounded by newer buildings, such as the Hgoumeneio, which was built in 1926, the chapel of Koimiseos tis Theotokou, built in 1937 and the premises of the Patriarchal Institute for Patristic Studies, founded in 1968.

The holy relics of Saint Helen and the Holy Cross are to be showcased at the Church of Agia Varvara (St. Barbara) in Athens, Greece from May 14.St. Helen, mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, is a revered saint among Christians, particular the orthodox community, for her work with the poor and her contributions to the early church.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity located in the far away country of Fiji, in the island of Viti Levu and between the cities of Nadi and Lautoka. Now, this is the only Greek Orthodox church located 16,750 kilometers away (yes, away!!) from the Greek capital of Athens... I discovered this church purely by chance as I was visiting Lautoka and paid it a visit the following Sunday, here is what I found and experienced.
Fiji, a country in the South Pacific, is an archipelago of more than 300 islands. It's famed for rugged landscapes, palm-lined beaches and coral reefs with clear lagoons. Its major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, contain most of the population. Viti Levu is home to the capital, Suva, a port city with British colonial architecture. The Fiji Museum, in the Victorian-era Thurston Gardens, has ethnographic exhibits.

Orthodox Archbishop of Athens welcomes Relics of St. Helena the Empress and Isapostle
His Beatitude Orthodox Archbishop of Athens and all Greece Ieronimos has welcomed the Relics of St. Helena the Empress of the Roman Empire, Equal to the Apostles and mother of the Holy and Great Emperor Constantine, Equal to the Apostles.
Vatican has allowed that Relics of St. Empress Helena visit Most Holy Church of Athens, for a short period of time, so Orthodox Christians could venerate the holy Empress.
St. Helena was Greek born and mother of st. Emperor Constantine, who stopped the persecution of the Orthodox Church in the Roman Empire in 313. St. Helena played great role in influencing her son to change Empire's politics on Christians and at last to convert the Emperor Himself to the Christian faith. St. Helena as a pilgrim visited the Holy Land, built important churches at the Holy Sites of the Lord's earthly life, and has found the True Cross.
St. Helena being the Empress of the Roman Empire, the Church of Athens and Greek Government have welcomed the Relics of St. Helena with all due state honors.
The Relics were carried inside the church, where Archbishop of Athens, along with the Bishops of the Greek Orthodox Church, priesthood and faithful have prayed together and once more confirmed the Faith that, by our Faith in Jesus Christ, we all become Body of Christ, as apostle Paul teaches us. The strong faith of St. Helena has embodied her own body in to the Body of Christ the Church, so Her body remains incorrupt to this day.
Fortify, o Lord, us in the incorrupt Orthodox Christian faith, and let us commune with You even more at the ever lasting day of Your Kingdom.

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Greek Orthodox Christians followed in Jesus' footsteps down the cobblestones of Jerusalem's Old City, to celebrate their holy day of Good Friday.
Carrying a large wooden cross, pilgrims made their way down the ancient Via Dolorosa, where tradition says Christ hoisted a cross on his back on the way to his crucifixion.
However notably missing from the ceremony was the embattled leader of the Greek Orthodox Church, Patriarch Irineos I.
He failed to show up for the services just hours after an Israeli newspaper reported it had obtained proof the church leased prime property in disputed east Jerusalem to Jewish investors for 198 years.
The alleged land deal is politically explosive because Israel claims all of Jerusalem, while Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of a future state.
Jewish land purchases in east Jerusalem are seen as bolstering Israel's claim to that section of the city.
Maariv reported Friday that it had obtained a copy of the eight-page lease agreement between the church and unidentified foreign Jewish investors.
The reported deal has stirred huge anger among Palestinians despite the denials of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch.
Palestinian protesters said they felt betrayed by the church, and some church officials demanded Irineos step down.
At a rare news conference last month, Irineos told reporters he was unaware of the alleged transactions, and that he was not involved in any sale.
There were no protests Friday outside the church, where the holiday service was attended mostly by priests and Greek and Cypriot pilgrims untouched by the political aspects of the reported deal.
The church also denied that any long-term lease had been signed, though one church official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a 99-year lease had been signed.
