MARINCIRCHE CHURCH - PULA
The ornamental church in Pula (Marincirche Church, Chiesa della Marina, today the church of Our Lady of the Sea) was built on the hill of St. Polikarp in Pula at the end of the 19th century. More precisely, the construction began in 1891, and the church was completed in 1898. The style of construction is a mixture of neo-bizanty and neoromantics, and left its mark on the church to three architects: Friedrich von Schmidt, Victor Lunz and Natale Tommasi. The latter was from the area of Trento and in 1890 he designed the building of the German State Gymnasium in Pula (now the Archaeological Museum of Istria) and the parish church of Sv. Agnese in Medulin.
The church is entirely built of alternating rows of white Istrian stone from Brijuni and the roaring marble extracted in the quarries of Oprtalj and Brtonigla. The rich exterior decoration is followed by nothing less rich decoration of the church interior. Beside the church is a bell tower 28 meters high made by Tommasi project. The top of the bell tower is flat, and there is a bronze statue of angel wings spread, the work of prof. Raffaette from Trent. It is also crowned with the upper row of quadriforers (4 openings ending in poles) and lower row of trifors. The bell tower hides 5 bells.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the car Franjo Josip from whose treasury church was financed. Anegdote says that during this visit the church was besieging the marble column, which is naturally present (as it is already) concerned, wondered if he did not like the church. The answer of Francis Joseph was: I'm just checking if it's under the gold, given how much church building is costing.
