DUBROVNIK (Dalmatia) Croatia by Cehulić family
★★★★★ ★★★★★
Dubrovnik is an old city on the Adriatic Sea coast in the extreme south of Croatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist resorts of the Mediterranean. The city of Dubrovnik (Latin: Ragusa) was built on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages it became the only city-state in the Adriatic to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Hiking Kotor Fortress: Top things to do in Kotor Bay (St John Fortress Hike & Abandoned Church)
Hiking up Kotor Fortress is one of the top things to do in Kotor and is a must-see when you visit. It’s no wonder Kotor’s Fort is one of the best photography spots in Boka Bay, offering breathtaking views of the red-roofed houses dotting the old town below and fjord-like mountains diving deep into the sea below. Sunrise or sunset is especially a great time to go.
Why and when was Kotor fortress built?
Also known as St John’s Fortress (Sveti Ivan), and San Giovanni Fortress by locals, Kotor Fortress was built to protect the town of Kotor from invaders. Construction of Kotor’s Fortress walls began in the 9th century and was then finally finished in the 15th century. The fortress walls make a 4.5 km circuit around Kotor’s old town, joining in with the jagged mountainside behind. The walls were added to over the years by whoever ruled at the time, ranging from the Venetians to Byzantines).
How long does it take to hike Kotor Fortress?
To hike to Sveti Ivan, or, Kotor Fortress, it will take you about 2–2.5 hours round trip. The climb to the fortress is 1200 metres, or 1350 steps.
How do I get there?
To reach Kotor Fortress/St John Fortress from inside the old town of Kotor, make your way to the back of the old town Salad Square (Trg od Salate). There you will find narrow alleys which lead you to an entrance where you will be required to pay an 8 euro entrance fee (as of 2019). This route will take you up a clearly marked path straight to the fortress.
I took an alternative route called the ‘Ladder of Kotor’. To go this way, you must enter from behind the North (River) Gate. This unofficial route is less busy and offers the best views of the surrounding mountains as you walk beneath them. You will often see wild goats feeding on the shrubbery and trees as you walk up. You can also stop by a small family run café and grab a fresh pomegranate juice on your way to Kotor Fortress.
Bring comfortable shoes and water.
When is the best time to go?
The best time to hike to Kotor Fortress is in the morning or just before sunset during summer, and during midday between October and April.

Eric Clark’s Travel Videos - Omis Croatia - Omis Fortress - Huge rough rocky climb but worth it!!
I got this from the Wikipedia site. = )
Omiš was well known in the past by the Corsairs of Almissa (Omiški gusari)[4] whose Sagittas (ships) (Genitive case: Sagittae, translated as The Arrow), brought fame to them because they were built for attack and fast retrieval into the mouth of the Cetina River, protecting the town from foreign invaders. At a very early date, neighbours of the Corsairs of Almissa, the highlanders of the Poljica Principality [5] (Poljička Republika), became their friends and allies. This allowed them to harass the seaborne trade, without fear of a sudden attack from inland.
Historical monuments:
Church of St Euphemia by the coast on Brzet, from the early 6th century
Mirabella Fortress (Peovica) from the 13th century
Starigrad Fortress (Fortica) from the 15th century
Renaissance church of the Holy Spirit from the 15th century
Old cemetery, the 16th century or 17th century
Parochial church from the 17th century
Franciscan Monastery on Skalice from the 18th century
In the Priko neighborhood, on the right bank of the Cetina River, stands the site with the most historic significance: the pre-Romanesque Church of St. Peter (Crkva Sv. Petra) from the tenth century A.D. This single-naved edifice, with a cupola and apse, was used in the 18th century as a Glagolithic seminary for novice priests.
EXPLORING CROATIA: Inside the historic CATHEDRAL of ST. LAWRENCE in TROGIR
SUBSCRIBE: - The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is a Roman Catholic triple-naved basilica constructed in Romanesque-Gothic in Trogir, Croatia. Since its construction lasted several centuries, it illustrates all the styles that succeeded one another in Dalmatia. It serves now as the most imposing monument in the city of Trogir.
Croatia is an Eastern European country with a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Encompassing more than a thousand islands, it's also crossed by the Dinaric Alps. Its inland capital, Zagreb, is distinguished by its medieval Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and diverse museums. The major coastal city Dubrovnik has massive 16th-century walls encircling an Old Town with Gothic and Renaissance buildings.

Bajkovita Hrvatska - Trogirska katedrala (Trogir Cathedral)
HRT
Trogir Cathedral
It was built on the foundations of an early-Christian cathedral destroyed in the 12th century during the sack of the town by the Saracens in 1123. The building of the cathedral began in 1213 and finished during the 17th century. Like the older one, it is also dedicated to St. Lawrence (Sveti Lovro) but it is better known as St. John's Cathedral (Sveti Ivan) after bishop John, who died in 1111 and stood out for his saintly lifestyle at a time when the Hungarian King Koloman had taken over Dalmatia and Croatia. Most of the work in the construction of the cathedral took place in the 13th century, being mostly completed in 1251. That means the building is mainly in Romanesque style, whilst the vault inside is gothic as it was built during the 15th century, in Mannerist style.
Work on the bell tower began at the end of the 14th century, but it was not completed until the end of the 16th century. The first floor is in Gothic style and it was built by Masters Stejpan and Matej. After it had been demolished by the Venetians in 1420, it was restored by Matija Gojković.[1] The second floor is in low Gothic style and was probably the work of Venetian masters, as it is reminiscent of the windows of the famous Venetian Palazzo Ca d'Oro. The final floor was built by Trifun Bokanić (1575–1609). On top of the bell tower there are four statues, the work of Venetian sculptor Alessandro Vittoria (1525–1608). In the centre of the facade, within a small round opening, there is the carved coat of arms of the most powerful King, Ludvic of Angevin dynasty.
The cathedral is part of the historic core of Trogir, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Exploring Kotor, Montengro - Travel Highlights [4K]
Wedged between brooding mountains and a glistening Fjord, achingly atmospheric Kotor is perfectly at one with its setting. Hemmed in by staunch walls snaking up the surrounding slopes, the town is a medieval maze of museums, churches, cafe-strewn squares and Venetian palaces. It’s a dramatic and delightful place where the past coexists with the present. Come nightfall, Kotor’s spectacularly lit-up walls glow as serenely as a halo as the streets buzz with bars and live music.
Climbing the Ladder of Kotor to San Giovanni Castle for breathtaking views over the city and fjord before slipping through the hole in the wall to Špiljari; a ruined village of stone wall houses with the abandoned church of St. John in its midst.
Walking down the old, winding caravan road back through the cat filled streets of Stari Grad to get to the iconic, abandoned Hotel Fjord for some urban exploration.

STORYLINE:
Catholic pilgrims in the Croatian port city of Rijeka gathered in their thousands on Pentecost Sunday, which marks God's sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples, for a Mass by Pope John Paul.
They anticipated a message from the pope that people here already model: ethnic and religious tolerance.
The venue overlooks a river that once was the border between territories occupied by neighbouring Italy and those belonging to Croatia.
Today, Croats live alongside the city's Italian and Serb minorities, and they did so even during the 1991 Serbo-Croat war here.
The nationalists that ruled Croatia from 1991 until three years ago never ran Rijeka.
The pope, who suffers from Parkinson's disease and crippling knee and hip ailments, seemed to draw strength from the palpable euphoria that has greeted him on every stop of his visit to the former Yugoslav republic.
Later on Sunday the pope was expected to visit the 700-year-old shrine of St. Mary of Trsat.
Showing he keeps up with contemporary events, John Paul also was to bless the cornerstone for the village of the 2009 Mediterranean Games, which Rijeka hopes to host.

Zagreb
The oldest settlement in the urban area of Zagreb was a Roman town of Andautonia, which dates back to the 1st century AD. The first recorded appearance of the name Zagreb is dated to 1094, at which time the city existed as two different city centers: the smaller, eastern Kaptol, inhabited mainly by clergy and housing Zagreb Cathedral, and the larger, western Gradec, inhabited mainly by farmers and merchants. Gradec and Zagreb were united in 1851. After Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia, 19 May 1991, Zagreb was proclaimed its capital.

Benedict XVI's travel plans for Croatia
PRAY FOR FRUITFULNESS OF APOSTOLIC TRIP TO CROATIA
VATICAN CITY, 1 JUN 2011 (VIS) - During today's general audience celebrated in St. Peter's Square, the Pope greeted the various groups of faithful in their respective languages.
Addressing a group of Polish pilgrims, the Holy Father particularly greeted the youth who will meet next Saturday in Lednica. Give thanks to God for the life and the beatification of John Paul II: father, guide, priest, and friend of the youth. He built the house on the rock who is Christ! He followed the voice of the Gospel. He persevered in prayer and in adoration of the Eucharist. He had a heart that was open to all. He suffered with Christ. He was an extraordinary pilgrim in faith. May you be inspired by the theme for the gathering: 'John Paul II: What Matters is Holiness'!.
Benedict XVI also greeted the Croatian pilgrims: Next Saturday and Sunday, he said, I will visit Zagreb in Croatia to celebrate with you the National Day of Catholic Croatian Families. I look forward to this meeting with joy and invite you to pray that my visit to that beloved land will produce much spiritual fruit and that Christian families might be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
May 31, 2011. (Romereports.com) Benedict XVI will travel to Croatia on June 4 and 5. During his two-day visit, he will preside over the National Day of Croatian Catholic Families. This is the first trip that Benedict XVI has made to the country as pope, however he visited twice while he was a cardinal.
The pope will arrive at the Zagreb airport on the morning of Saturday June 4. He plans to give a speech directed toward the entire nation. He will also be received by the president, Ivo Josipovic, the Cardinal of Zagreb, Josip Bozanic and the president of the Croatian Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Marin Srakić.
The President of Croatia is an avid music lover and the pope plans to give him a copy of a song's manuscript from the Vatican Library.
Benedict XVI will be staying at the Croatian nunciature, which was built 20 years ago, after the country's independence from Yugoslavia. There he will receive the Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor.
In the afternoon, in the Croatian National Theatre, Benedict XVI will meet with representatives from local organizations, politicians, entrepreneurs, diplomats and leaders of other religions. In total, he will meet with around 700 people. It will be the only Ecumenical meeting for the trip.
After the meeting, Benedict XVI will meet with 50,000 young people in the central square of Zagreb. He will give away a gold rosary to the Virgin Mary. The meeting will end with a Eucharistic adoration.
On Sunday June 5, Benedict XVI will preside over the Day of Croatian Families. It will be at a local racetrack which holds around 300,000 people.
In the afternoon, he will visit the famous Cathedral of Zagreb, which has neo-Gothic style, and where the Blessed Alojzije Stepinac is buried. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison by a communist court. Here, the bishops, priests and seminarians will pray the Vespers together.
Of the 4 ½ million inhabitants in Croatia, 89% are Catholic. Agnostics make up 6% and 2% practice Islam.
Ljubiti Crkvu, 28
Put, 573
Katolički, apostolski, rimski! Drago mi je da si toliko rimski. I da imaš želju hodočastiti u Rim videre Petrum, - upoznati Petra.
Put, 520
Svaki dan sve više moraš rasti u vjernosti prema Crkvi, Papi i Svetoj Stolici... S ljubavlju sve više teološkom!
Brazda, 353
Prihvati Papinu riječ, prioni vjerom, jednostavnom, unutarnjom i djelotvornom: budi uza nj!
