Sacred Solemn Splendor # 2: Basilica Cathedral of St Dunstan, Charlottetown; PEI (Canada)

St. Dunstan's Cathedral Basilica Church is a Neo-Gothic Roman Catholic church built on the remains of three previous churches on that site; the third church had been damaged by fire in 1913. St. Dunstan's is seat of the bishop of Charlottetown. Saint Dunstan is probably the most visible landmark in Charlottetown with its spires being so high.

This is an outside tour of the Rustico Farmers bank and St Augustines church in Rustico, PEI. I like to think similar to how Nomadic Fanatic does his tours :P Its just a walk around on a sunny day looking at the attractions there which aren't open - well the church is but not the bank and the log house. (SOLD) This house, for us, is about space, views, breezes and comfort. Large rooms with equally large windows create a spacious and bright environment. Multiple windows and patio doors provide superb views from everywhere within. Breezes off the bay flow throughout the house. And the design and detail make for comfortable, relaxed living.

I love to cook. Our kitchen makes cooking a breeze. A pantry and large cabinets keep everything in place. The best feature though is the large window over the sink with its wonderful view of the bay.

On some occasions, with company, we will serve dinner in the adjacent dining area. With comfortable seating for up to 12 guests, this room has panoramic views of the bay and far shore.

The views continue in the great room. A large space, with windows on 3 walls, this room is built for relaxing.

When our grandchildren visit, they head for their favourite space, the lower level family room. They dig out all the toys and play for hours. When they crash, they do so in the big bedroom across the hall. When the children aren’t here, we often head down to this level to read or watch DVD’s. It feels so private, and away from everything else, almost sanctuary-like.

The views get better the higher you go. Our upper floor office faces the bay. From our desks, we can see for miles. While on a business phone call, we might be distracted by a bald eagle cruising along above the shore. And I’m amazed and amused by the aerobatics of the crows who inhabit this shoreline. They love to swoop and dive in the wind, and to harass the occasional fox who ventures across our front lawn.

Our favourite space of all is the master suite. Vaulted ceiling, large windows and patio doors create a spacious, airy atmosphere, in this very private place. A corridor leads to the master bath. This room likewise is roomy and bright. A most remarkable feature of our bedroom concerns the full moon.

Both the office and the master bedroom open onto the upper level deck. From here, we have bird’s eye views down to the village and wharf and hills beyond. To the east, we can look across the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the beach and dunes of Brackley. We can also see the Covehead lighthouse blinking after dark, eight kilometers away. We have spent many clear nights out here, stargazing and scanning the sky for satellites. One of my favourite views from this deck is of the early evening sun, with its warm, golden light, shining onto the fishing shanties, homes and lighthouse out in North Rustico Harbour a kilometer to the east.

When we need to get out, we strap on the blades and skate 5 minutes to the National Park entrance. From here, we can skate on the paved bike path along the Gulf Shore Parkway for 9 km to Cavendish. This route has some of the prettiest views on the island. We often do the same thing with our bikes. For shorter walks, we cross the street to the boardwalk and walk 500 metres to the pedestrian entrance to the park, where we explore the dunes and the cliff top overlooking North Rustico Beach.

Rustico Bay is an integral part of our experience living here. The dominating physical feature, the bay stretches from the village and wharf to the west, eastward to the passage out to the gulf, and straight south from our house to Anglo Rustico on the far shore. The activity on this bay is endless. Wildlife alone can provide hours of enjoyment. We watch osprey circle and hover, then dive for their catch. We see eagles on the hunt, and occasionally foraging on the shore. Crows love to peck away at debris in the sand, and raise alarms when the eagles come along. Late afternoon and early evening we see great blue herons glide down over our house on their way to feed in the shallows. We watch them standing motionless for minutes before they make a lightning fast strike then gulp their catch. For a few weeks in the fall, flocks of 1000 Canada geese mass along the shoreline.
