The church dates from around 1000 A.D. Within is a rare example of a medieval rood-loft once hidden but re-discovered in 1810. It also contains a notable font believed to be of Saxon origin and later adorned with some interesting carvings during the Norman period.

St James' Parish Church, Finchampstead
St James’ is an ancient Grade-1 listed Church and a sense of wonder will always develop when you think that people have been worshipping on this site for nearly a thousand years.
No one is really sure when people first began to gather on the high ground at Finchampstead to give praise. It is easy to imagine how, standing on the hill and viewing the countryside around, they felt closer to God. It is quite possible that some form of worship goes back to pagan or pre-christian times.
The original St James’ church building was created by Sir Alard Banestra with the help of monks from Reading Abbey and local Villeins and surfs, etc. Dates vary, probably due to the long period of years it took to build the original church but it is thought to have been started in the 1120′s and completed in about 1134.
Simple Saxon Churches were improved by the later Normans who engaged in an intensive programme of building throughout the land. It was during this time that St. James’ took its present basic form in c1150.

Devizes (St John) and Rowde Bells
Some Stedman Triples on the pleasant old style 8 at St John Devizes, with a variety of founders, including little-known Devizes founder James Burrough, as well as Taylors, Wells and Purdue. They were rehung in 1997 by Taylors and have a good old style growl to them, although they are rather oddstruck, the 6 in particular
Tenor 19-1-6 in D
Rowde are a good 11cwt 6, Taylors 1870. Note the odd stairway necessitating going up left-foot-first - unless you're me!! When we got hear we found that the two trebles clappers were tied (and that we were ringing up in the order 345612 - not that that mattered!!) - the long wait for the key is partly the reason for the very short clip of these lovely bells
Tenor 11-1-8 in Ab
