Spišský Hrad (Slovakia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Spišský Hrad in Slovakia.
Situated in eastern Slovakia, Zipser Castle or, Spišský Hrad, is one of the largest fortifications in Central Europe. Located on an expansive travertin rock, it is situated above Spišské Podhradie. At its zenith up to two thousand people lived there and the complex covered an area of more than four hectares and five castle courtyards. Up until 1464 the castle belonged to Hungary and subsequent members of the Hungarian nobility continued its occupation. During the first half of the seventeenth century, thirty one towns and villages belonged to the castle. Today, the castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On an adjacent hill is an intriguing place, the church town of Spišská Kapitula, Slovakia’s ‘Vatican City.’ A sturdy ring wall with only two exits, protected the church. The Romanesque, Saint Martin Basilica, is situated at the top of a hill, a mighty three-aisled building with two towers which, from around 1245, was thirty years in construction. Its Gothic main altar originated from the workshop of Master Paul Of Leutschau who had created numerous famous altars in other cathedrals. The religious paintings on the altar, along with a number of wooden images, depict deep religious faith. This symbol of ecclesiastical authority has managed to survive the rigours of time and has become an integral part of world heritage culture.

Kezmarok (Slovakia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kezmarok in Slovakia.
Kežmarok is located in the north east of Slovakia in front of the fabulous scenery of the High Tatra. The town’s fifteenth century Gothic castle is located at the edge of the Old Town and its external walls form some sections of the city wall. At the beginning of the sixteenth century it was owned by the Thököly family and was given its present day splendour in full Renaissance style. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Kežmarok was a centre of rebellion against the Viennese Emperor. Its Baroque castle chapel is a fine building and was renovated in 1658 at the time of the Protestant Oppression. The castle survived the changing times and is one of the town’s main attractions. In the centre of the old town is the Roman Catholic Holy Cross Basilica with its white façade and tall church tower. Gothic and Renaissance dominate its rich interior. The altars and murals, with figures of the story of the Passion, are one of Slovakia’s most valuable works of art. The highlight is the basilica’s main wing altar that features Christ. The town’s Evangelical-Lutheran congregation had the New Protestant AB Church built between 1872 and 1894. Later followed the annexing of a mausoleum for Imre Thököly, who stood up for religious freedom. It was built according to an unconventional design by Danish architect, Theophil Hansen, who featured Byzantine, Romanesque, Moorish and Oriental elements. Next to it is one of the most beautiful articular churches in Slovakia. The churchs’ treasures include one of the oldest wooden pipe organs, a baptismal font, and splendid altar. These were the directives issued within the framework of the Counter-Reformation of 1681: the Articularies. Built at their own cost, completely made of wood, without a stone foundation and within twelve months, this extraordinary building is one of Kežmarok’s most prized buildings.

Levoča (Slovakia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Levoča in Slovakia.
In the east of Slovakia is Levoča, formerly, Leutschau. In 1317 the city became a free royal town with numerous privileges. Kaschau Gate is the most beautiful of the three well-preserved city gates and the two and a half kilometre city wall once contained fifteen bastions. Levoča eventually became the capital of the region occupied by the Zipser Saxons. The main square contains forty Renaissance-style buildings once owned by the Bourgeoisie and indicate the former wealth of the inhabitants of this city of trade. Jakob Cathedral is regarded as a national treasure. Mighty buttresses support a beautiful net vault, the result, a mediaeval atmosphere. In the half-light, there are various side altars and many splendid murals. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the city was one of Europe’s most important centres of trade due to the trade routes that crossed here between Hungary and Poland. A mighty ring wall, with only two exits, protected the nearby Spišská Kapitula Church. The Romanesque Martin Basilica is the most important building in the complex which was founded in 1198. Of the former thirteen Gothic altars, five remain. Finally, both Levoča and Spišská Kapitula have managed to survive Turkish invasion, various sieges mounted by the troops of the Habsburgs, and numerous deadly plagues!

Things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia
I spent around 24 hrs in Bratislava, Slovakia and in this video I show you what I got up to as well useful info about the country and my experience.
I visit some of the highlights of this beautiful Slovak city including the beautiful Blue Church, the Bratislava Castle, Main Square and St Martin’s church just to name a few. Compared to the big cities Vienna and Budapest, Bratislava is such a cosy little city that is not overwhelming! A great place to take a break, relax and eat delicious food.
How safe did I feel as a black, Muslim female solo traveller? Pretty safe. Did I get stared at? Yep! But where do I not?? Although I spent the best part of my time with Matus, a local friend who I met through Couchsurfing and was kind enough to show me around, I spent majority of Sunday on my own and walked around the city. If you are on your own, I’d recommend joining a free walking tour to get your bearings although it is easy and safe to see everything by yourself. The city defo deserves more than 24 hrs but I was pressed for time!
The majority of Slovakia is mountainous and next time I am in this beautiful country, I will be going to the mountains! :)

Levice - Slovakia
Levice is a town in western Slovakia. The town lies on the left bank of the lower Hron river.
Levice is first mentioned as Leua, one of the villages belonging to the parish of St. Martin's Church in Bratka (Hungarian: Baratka) in 1165. It was part of the comitatus Tekov (Bars).
First attacked by the Turks in 1544, the town was set on fire while the castle was left unharmed. The town was held by the Turks for two decades from 1663 to 1685. Under the Ottoman administration Leva was the center of a sandjak, which was part of the Uyvar eyalet.
Ottoman rule came to an end in the summer of 1685, when the Austrian Imperial Army led by General de Souches claimed an important victory at the Battle of Levice, which took place beneath the town's castle.
Austrian map, 1672
During the anti-Habsburg revolution of 1709, the fort was blown up by kuruces. After the break-up of Austria-Hungary, the town became a part of Czechoslovakia (confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon in 1920). As part of the breakup of Czechoslovakia under the Munich Agreement in World War II, the town again belonged to Hungary from 1938 to 1945. At the end of the Second World War it was returned to the restored Czechoslovakia, 75% of the town's Hungarian population was deported and replaced by Slovaks, rate of Hungarians fell from 89% to 12%. In 1993 it became part of present-day Slovakia.
It was the hometown of Eugene Fodor (1905--1991), the founder of Fodor's travel book company.

Bratislava Travel Guide - Slovakia Happy Times
Bratislava Travel Guide - Slovakia Happy Times
Bratislava or Pozsony in Hungarian and Pressburg in German, is the capital and largest city in Slovakia. It is the administrative, cultural and economic centre of the country. Before 1919, it was known as Prešporok in Slovak. Bratislava has a very pleasant medieval inner city with narrow, winding streets, a hill-top castle next to the river Danube, and many historic churches and buildings to visit. The old town is centered on two squares, Hlavne namestie (main square) and Hviezdoslavovo namestie (Hviezdoslav square, named after a famous Slovak poet). Of a rather different architectural character are some of the communist-era buildings found in the modern parts of the city; a prime example is Petrzalka housing estate, the biggest Communist-era concrete block housing complex in Central Europe, which stretches on endlessly just across the river. Move further east and there are plenty of rural places to explore. Farms, vineyards, agricultural land, and tiny villages are situated less than 50 kilometres to the north and east of Bratislava.
Today, Bratislava and its surroundings form the most prosperous region (NUTS-2 Region) in Central and Eastern Europe, with a per capita GDP of around 186% of the EU-27 average and it is the fifth most prosperous region in EU. After the fall of the Great Moravian Empire, Slovakia became part of the Kingdom of Hungary from the 10th century until the end of the First World War when the Treaty of Trianon created Czechoslovakia, a country which Slovaks are widely proud of - for example, some Czechoslovakian representatives, such as Alexander Dubček and Gustáv Husák, were ethnically Slovak.
Generally, Bratislava is a walking city. The center is very small and cosy and you can easily walk from one side to another in a few minutes. The city center is a pedestrian area, however, be aware of cyclists and occasional cars. If you need to travel outside of the center, use the trams or trolley buses if you need to get from one point to another quickly. Bratislava has a rather good public transportation system although some of the vehicles are quite old, especially during peak hours older buses can be seen. Buses tend to be the slowest means of transportation.
Drink and eat in one of the many restaurants in Old Town, or take a short walk from city centre to Danube promenade, where you can also choose from various restaurants in Riverpark or Eurovea. As everywhere else in the world, Typical local restaurants located near the tourist spots and in the busiest streets downtown are aimed at overpricing tourist for mediocre (at the best) food - use common sense to distinguish tourist trap from a normal eatery.
Bratislava is the cultural heart of Slovakia. Owing to its historical multi-cultural character, local culture is influenced by various ethnic and religious groups, including Germans, Slovaks, Hungarians, and Jews. Bratislava enjoys numerous theatres, museums, galleries, concert halls, cinemas, film clubs, and foreign cultural institutions.

Despite the march of modernism, Bratislava still has nature on its doorstep. The city banks the Danube River, only a few kilometres from the Austrian border. Rolling north are the Malé Karpaty (Small Carpathians), their lowlands draped with vineyards. Flitting between postcard-pretty, steely and gorgeously green, Bratislava never fails to intrigue.

Vlkolinec (Slovakia) Travel - Honeymoon Gems
Hidden Honeymoon Gems - Vlkolinec, Slovakia - part of the weddings video series by GeoBeats.
If you want to enjoy Slovakian folk architecture on your honeymoon, check out Vlkolinec
It dates to at least the fourteenth century, when its earliest mention was recorded.
One of the most impressive structures in the town is the eighteenth-century belfry that is located in the towns central square.
They are nearly all of entirely traditional design and are an important part of Slovakian culture.
The brightly-colored wood homes are a striking counterpoint to the tall hills and mountains of the region.
Accompanying Vlkolinec's folk architecture is the folk art of the area, including carvings and statues scattered throughout the village.
This ancient town not only holds a UNESCO world heritage site honor, but has been named as one of only ten Slovak folk architecture reservations.

The Capital of the Slovak Republic Bratislava, also referred to as the Beauty on the Danube can not only boast interesting history but it also is the centre of the most dynamically developing region of central Europe at present.
Slovakia is after Austria the second country in the middle Europe with the largest amount of forests? Almost 40% of its territory is covered by forest, while in Austria it is only 6% more.
Bratislava and Vienna are two closest located capitals in Europe. There is only less than 60 km between them. According to some sources, the European geographical central point is considered to be near the roman-catholic church of St. John the Baptist above the village of Kremnické Bane.
Slovakia has many winter resorts with beautiful natural views. Downhill skiers, snowboarders, free ride and free skiing devotees, ski-mountaineers, cross-country skiers but also little beginners in ski kindergartens can have their field day. If you cannot ski - it doesn´t matter - you can go sledging, try winter hiking, bobsled tracks or just frolic with children in snow. It is never late to begin.
