St. Nicholas Church Myra, Demre Turkey
The fourth-century church of St. Nicholas in Demre was built to commemorate the bishop of Myra. Demre which is 60 km far from Antalya is called today as Kale (Castle), and at the same time hosts the famous church attributed to Saint Nicholas Demre. It is most notable for being the burial place of St. Nicholas of Myra, who was the Eastern Orthodox bishop of the ancient city of Myra in the 4th century, and is an important religious figure for Eastern Orthodox Christians, and Christians everywhere for being Santa Claus.

Saint Nicholas Church Myra (Demre/Kale), Turkey 2018. A Place in History: Demre, The Birthplace of Saint Nicholas. The city of Demre received its wide popularity mainly due to the fact that here is the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. It is considered the third most important religious construction of Byzantine architecture in the East. In the form in which we see the church now, it was built in the beginning of the 4th century on the site of the ancient temple of the goddess Artemis.
Despite its very old age, the church has perfectly preserved wall murals and paintings of the 6th and 7th centuries, which gives the room a completely unusual look. The floor is paved with a very of interesting mosaic made of different types of stone. It is believed that this mosaic was already in that ancient temple and existed before Nicholas the Wonderworker came to Demeter.
It is very unusual to see in a Christian church card suits on the walls. It is a well-known Christian symbolism, which later became used in maps: the hearts symbolize the heart of Christ, the diamonds are its wound, the spears are the spear that was inflicted on the wound, and the clubs symbolize the crucifixion.
St. Nicholas, after his death, was buried in the Lycian marble sarcophagus in this church. In the XI century, when the church was threatened with being looted by the Seljuk Turks, Italian merchants stole the relics of the saint and brought them to their ships in the city of Bari, in the southeast of Italy. And to this day the shrine is in the temple of this Italian city.
Now St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is one of the most revered saints in Christianity. He is revered not only as a defender from troubles and misfortunes, but also as a protector in the sea.

Demre is a town and its surrounding district in the #Antalya Province on the Mediterranean coast of #Turkey, named after the river Demre.
Demre is the Lycian town of #Myra, the home of Saint Nicholas of Myra, the historical man later developed into the figure of Santa Claus. The district was known as Kale until it was renamed in 2005. A substantial Christian community of Greeks lived in Demre (Myra) until the 1920s when they were forced to migrate to Greece after the Population exchange between Greece and Turkey.[4] The abandoned Greek villages in the region are a striking reminder of this exodus. Abandoned Greek houses can still be seen at Demre and the regions of Kalkan, Kaş and Kaya which is a Greek ghost town.[4] A small population of Turkish farmers moved into the region when the Greek Christians were forced to migrate to Greece.[4] The region is popular with tourists today particularly Christian pilgrims who visit the tomb of Saint Nicholas.

ABANDONED - Sunken City Kekova Turkey (Atlantis ?) Glass Bottom Boat Trip
#ABANDONED - Sunken City Kekova Turkey (Alantis ?) Glass Bottom Boat Trip, #urbex #atlantis. Kekova, also named Caravola (Lycian: Dolichiste), is a small Turkish island near Demre (Demre is the Lycian town of Myra) district of Antalya province which faces the villages of Kaleköy (ancient Simena) and Üçağız (ancient Teimioussa). Kekova has an area of 4.5 km2 (2 sq mi) and is uninhabited.
After the Italian occupation of Kastelorizo, Kekova — which at that time was temporarily inhabited during summer because of wood harvest — was disputed between Italy and Turkey. The 1932 Convention between Italy and Turkey assigned it to Turkey.
On its northern side there are the partly sunken ruins of Dolchiste/Dolikisthe, an ancient town which was destroyed by an earthquake during the 2nd century. Rebuilt and still flourishing during the Byzantine Empire period, it was finally abandoned because of Arab incursions. Tersane (meaning dockyard, as its bay was the site of an ancient city Xera and dockyard, with the ruins of a Byzantine church) is at the northwest of the island.
The Kekova region was declared a specially protected area on 18 January 1990 by Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forest. All kinds of diving and swimming were prohibited and subject to special permits from governmental offices. In later years the prohibition has been lifted except for the part where the sunken city is.
The Kekova region is 260 km2 (100 sq mi) and encompasses the island of Kekova, the villages of Kaleköy and Üçağız and the four ancient towns of Simena, Aperlae, Dolchiste and Teimioussa.
Kaleköy (locally just Kale) (ancient Simena) is a Lycian site on the Turkish coast. It is a small village with the partly sunken ruins of Aperlae[1] and a castle. Access to the village is possible only by sea.
Üçağız (ancient name, Teimioussa) is a village one km from Kaleköy, north of a small bay by the same name, with the ruins of Teimioussa to the east. The name Üçağız means three mouths, referring to the three exits to open sea.

Demre Myra (General Information)
Kale (Demre, Myra)
Well known for being the hometown of Santa Claus, Kale is an important faith tourism spot in Antalya.
History
The foundation date of Myra is not known exactly. However, the archaeological data, obtained from the researches in the grave reliefs with regard to style, indicates that the city has existed in the 5th century before Hellenistic Period. The city experienced its golden period during the 2nd century AD. Myra, completely destroyed by the earthquake in 141 AD., was rebuilt by the charities of the rich Opromaos from Radiopolis and Lucius Magnun, Roman Proconsul. Artemis Eleutera Sacred Place in the city was also rebuilt. Having been renovated in this period, the theatre with its ornaments was characterised as a wonder of the world in the Late Antique Period. Some of the numerous masks ornamenting this stage building are exhibited in the Demre Museum and some in the Antalya Museum.
During the reign of Theodosius II (408-450 AD.), the city became the Metropolitan of the Lycians. In this period, the reputation of the city as the centre of pilgrimage where diseases having been cured spread not only in Lycia but also throughout the Christian World. The reason for this is that Santa Claus (St. Nicholas) has lived here in Myra in this period.

Archaeological Tour South-West Turkey.3.

Myra Ruins Rock Cut Tombs. Lycian Turkey - Ancient Site of Myra, Lycia 2018. Travel to Turkey 2018.
Ruins of Ancient Myra and Lycian Rock Tombs at Demre 2018. Myra - Turkish Culture Portal. Hello Guys. In this video we will continue to show you the sights of the ancient city of Lycians - Myra.
Myra strikes with its rock tombs. Only for the sake of this scene it is worth coming here! Residents of Lycia believed that the higher a person is buried, the closer his soul will be to heaven, and hence to heavenly life. Therefore, the tombs were carved one above the other. And the richer and nobler the person, the more his tomb was placed above others. Some tombs are made in the form of a house. On the tombs are preserved Lycian inscriptions, many of them have not yet been deciphered.
The Lycians assumed that in this form the tombs would last for centuries, unlike the ancient temples built. As experience has shown, usually the conquerors and newly arrived generations dismantled the temples for their needs, not caring at all about their safety, and used as building materials. And rock structures for such purposes were not suitable. So the tombs survived to our times.
Now the tombs are empty – there's nothing left. And once there were stored not only the body of the deceased, but also different valuables, that human acquired during life - expensive clothes, household items, gold and jewelry. In the tombs for a long time, all the wealth of the deceased was preserved, since it was considered a serious crime to open and take something. Even the Romans did not dare to disturb the spirit of the departed into the other world.
In the 7th century, the inhabitants of Myra were forced to leave their inhabited lands. Because of the earthquake, the local river changed its course, and mud flows flooded the city.
