Orthodox believers pray for Russian Olympic team as newly built church is sanctified
Russian Orthodox believers attended a mass for the sanctification of a newly built church near the Olympic park in Sochi on Sunday.
The Holy Face of Christ the Saviour Church was opened at the beginning of January, and Russian President, Vladimir Putin, attended the first public service there for Orthodox Christmas.
On Sunday, Nikolay Vasilievich Kirichenko, Metropolitan Isidor of the diocese of Ekaterinodar and Kuban, travelled from the Russian city of Krasnodar to conduct the sanctification ceremony.
Prayers for success, dedicated to the Russian Olympic team, were said.
One local parishioner, Nadezhda Grunwald, said she was praying for the team to get more prizes.
Another woman, Nadezhda Lilikina, lit a candle and said she was praying for security during the games.
In late December last year, two suicide bombers killed 34 people in the southern Russian city of Volgograd.
I wouldn't wish that on anyone, not even my worst enemy, Lilikina added.
The build up to Sochi has been overshadowed by the threat of attacks by Islamist insurgents from the North Caucasus region.
Russia is deploying more than 50-thousand police and soldiers to protect the games, the biggest security operation in Olympic history.
The opening ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics is on 7 February.

A wonderful Thank You from Tikhvin, Russia
When you give a little, the ripple effects are astonishing. Here's a wonderful Thank You from Tikhvin, where - thanks to the support of kind people like you - a group of young ROCOR people go every year to help restore an old crumbling monastery. The people thanking you did not get any money. But they got something much better: the knowledge that ROCOR brothers and sisters care about them, the help of some strong hands, and the support of some wonderful hearts. Thank you!

The Island of Valaam. / Остров Валаам.
Valaam is the island in Republic of Karelia of Russia, located in the Northern part of the largest freshwater lakes in Europe - Ladoga, it is the largest island in the Valaam archipelago. On the island there is the village of Valaam, and the monument of Russian architecture - the Valaam monastery, founded before the baptism of Russia, in the year 960, the monk Sergius and Herman, the Greek Holy monks. Transfiguration monastery became the spiritual center of Ladoga lands. It is believed that in ancient times on the island, was located the main temple of Veles (or Volos) and Perun, who were the main deities for the Gentiles living close. The monastic tradition says that the Holy Apostle Andrew, enlightener of the Scythians and the Slavic peoples, moving along the route from the Varangians to the Greeks, blessed of cross the mountain on the island. In the 15th century the monastery was called the Great Lavra or the Northern Athos. Here was the center of world Orthodoxy and writing of books. By the early 16th century in the monastery lived 600 monks. Now in the monastery about two hundred inhabitants. Life revived in All saints, the Baptist, St. Nicholas, Svyatoostrovsky, Sergievsky sketes.
Period 1839-1917 is the heyday of the monastery. In 1989 on December 13, the day of memory of St. Andrew, when the island came six monks, the monastery began the process of revival. And 16 years later, in 2005, was first heard 1000-pound bell Andrew, mounted on the bell tower in the monastery in the framework of the restoration of an ancient belfry. The feast of the Nativity of the blessed virgin Mary September 21, 2008 Patriarch Alexy II consecrated the St. Vladimir skete on Valaam island and conducted the first divine Liturgy in the temple. Resurrection skete, located above Big Nikon Bay, on the mountain, was built in the early twentieth century in the place where according to tradition St. The Apostle Andrew erected a stone cross. Valaam island attracts every year thousands of tourists. The reason - the Valaam Islands have a unique nature, pine forests on the cliffs, warm and quiet inland lakes, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Valaam monastery. During its formation, the monks brought the land, seeds and seedlings of plants from different parts of our country. For such a Northern location is not usual to see some trees and grass. The age of some of them is over three hundred years. The work of the Valaam monks are so fundamental that some areas are truly hand-made. Balaam - the natural reserve, a unique monument of Park art. There are more than 480 species of plants. The island was visited repeatedly by emperors Alexander I, Alexander II, and other members of the imperial family and also Tchaikovsky and Mendeleyev.
The present life of the monastery, another indication that faith invariably raises and restores the monastery from the ruins. So it was throughout the history of Valaam barbarous raids of the Swedes in ancient times, the bombing and the uncertain fate of the monastery during World War 2, it complete, it would seem that the devastation in the era of atheism – monastic life always has returned to these shores.

Saint-Petersburg : the most beautiful city of Russia
The second largest city in Russia, St. Petersburg is rightfully called the cultural capital of Russia. A metropolitan city of five million people, it every year attracts nearly seven million tourists, of which about one half are foreign guests coming from all over the world. St. Petersburg was founded by the first Emperor of Russia, Tsar Peter the Great in 1703 as the new, western-style capital of Russia. Since its first days, St. Petersburg had always been a multicultural city, welcoming guests and specialists from other countries. Along with Russian masters and architects, many European builders and engineers contributed to the glory and beauty of the city.

UNITY IN DIVERSITY
UNITY IN DIVERSITY
From the 17th to the 20th of October of this year, the annual joint conference of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Augsburg Confession (ELCAC) and the Karelian Evangelical Lutheran Church (KELC) was held in Moscow. These churches are bound in agreement and friendship by shared altars and are actually a confessional union of two centralized religious organizations.
Gathered at the conference were representatives of Russian Lutheran churches from the primary regions of the Russian Federation: from Kaliningrad in the West to Irkutsk in the East, from Karelia in the North to Krasnodar in the South. Also present were representatives from fellowships of foreign ELCAC churches.
The theme of the conference, “Unity in Diversity” , highlighted the urgent need of the church today to overcome dissension, especially in the face of external enemies: militant secularism and international terrorism.
The conference began with a report from the President of the ELCAC General Synod, Bishop Vladimir Pudova of the ELCAC Diocese in Kaliningrad.
The key note speech of the conference was a speech by Bishop Konstantin Andreev of the ELCAC entitled Convergence: The Place of Russian Lutherans in the Modern Evangelical Movement.” In his speech he defined his vision for a church building for the Russian Union of Lutherans and marked its objectives and priorities.
Bishop Alexander Franz of the Church of the West Siberian ELCAC Diocese spoke on The History of Lutheranism in Siberia and the Far East and acquainted the participants with perspectives from the Convergence Lutheran Mission in the region.
The bishop of the Southern ELCAC Diocese, Anatoly Malakhov, together with Pastor Lev Dumachev, presented a model for the organization of Lutheran settlements and farming in their presentation Social projects and the Revival of the Lutheran Tradition of Agriculture: Ribensdorf Farm.”
Bishop Igor Knyazev of the Northern ELCAC Diocese, together with Pastor Ivan Ponomarev presented the existing projects and activities of the ELCAC in Asia.
International activities were presented by the ELCAC International Diocese Bishop Paul Levushkan. The parishes of this diocese are located in different countries: Latvia, Sweden, Israel, the Philippines, Pakistan and other countries.
ELCAC Auxiliary Bishop Paul Begichev read a report on Educational Projects.
Special time was also dedicated to community development and the growth of the church.
The ELCAC and KELC are recognized today as members of the International Convergence Movement, uniting conservative Christian churches of different traditions around traditional Christian values.
The conference itself was attended by the Archbishop of the Old Catholic Church of Slovakia, His Eminence Augustine Bachinskii and senior pastor of the Finnish Community of Conservative Lutheran Churches, Ismo Valkoniemi.
Bishop Alexander Kuznetsov of the Karelian Evangelical Lutheran Church told the conference participants about the conservative mission of the Russian Lutherans in Finland.
Following the decision of the official Finnish Lutheran Church to bless and marry homosexual couples, many Finns left the church. Several communities now recognize as their bishop Alexander Kuznetsov.
Heads of major foreign conservative convergence churches joined the conference through teleconferencing. Speakers included Archbishop of the Orthodox Anglican Church, the Orthodox Metropolitan of the Anglican Church, Reverend Thomas Gordon; The Bishop of the European Diocese of the International Communion of Charismatic Episcopal Churches, Reverend Jose Elmer Belmont; General Secretary of the Bishops’ Council of the Evangelical Episcopal Church, His Eminence Archbishop David Scott.
This conference opened new discussion in Russian protestantism regarding convergence. Time was spent in corporate prayer for unity among Christians during the gathering of the Russian Union of Evangelical Christians. Also, talks were held with the leaders of the union, Bishop Sergey Ryakhovskyi and Mats Ola Ishoel.
The delegation of convergent churches was led by the Archbishop of the Old Catholic Church of Slovakia, Avgustin Bachinskyi, ELCAC Bishop Konstantin Andreev, and KELC Bishop Alexander Kuznetsov.
Decisions were made to strengthen the cooperation between churches of different Christian traditions, and a plan was mapped out for overcoming divisions in the Body of Christ. The preaching of the gospel and Christian moral values were determined to be priorities for cooperation between churches.
During the conference, a consecration ritual was also performed, due to the growth of the church and the need for more ordained ministers.
During the forum, a meeting was held of the Russian Conference of Conservative Lutheran Bishops, formed in 2015, and Bishop Alexander Franz was elected its new Chairman.
