Island of MYKONOS and its colourful, iconic CHURCHES (GREECE)
SUBSCRIBE: - (Μύκονος), Greece, and its beautiful churches. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Mykonos is an island in the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea. It's popularly known for its summer party atmosphere. Beaches such as Paradise and Super Paradise have bars that blare thumping music. Massive dance clubs attract world-renowned DJs and typically stay open well past dawn. Iconic landmarks include a row of 16th-century windmills, which sit on a hill above Mykonos town.
Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castlelike Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

The castle of Monolithos. Rhodes.
Built on the foundations of another, older castle, the castle of Monolithos lies about 236m high on an amazingly difficult natural terrain which made its construction even more challenging. Under the orders of Grand Master D’Aubusson, and after having overcome the difficulties of transporting the building materials needed for its erection on the rocky outcrop, the castle was finally built, constituting one of the most important fortifications of Rhodes, due to its strategic location that allowed a clear view of the Mediterranean. Its extremely challenging route and position, also made it very difficult for the enemies, including Ottomans, to manage to seize the castle, forcing them to retrieve empty-handed.
Today only some external parts of the fortifications remain, but they are in a quite well reserved condition. But what worths embarking on an arduous attempt to climp the steep hill, are the magnificent whitewashed churches, the two 15th century chapels of St. Panteleimon and St. George and the breathtaking view of the mountain of Akramytis, the village of Monolithos right below it, the island Halki and of course the vast Aegean Sea.
Some people claim that the name Monolithos (standing stone and/ or monolith) has not been given due to the rock, on which the castle is built, but due to a black monolith with metaphysical powers that the Knights brought from the Holy Land. They even say that this monolith is still buried there and if anyone ever dares to dig it up, the whole island will sink!

Walking down the sidewalk we saw this monastery (almost missed it!). Within were a few buildings including a beautiful church. Inside some kids were sitting on the floor chanting and singing.

Byzantine church 900ac - AGIOS PANTELEHMONAS
AGIOS PANTELEHMONAS GREECE→ CRETE→ IRAKLIO
Agios Panteleimonas is a byzantine church that must be one of the oldest in Crete. It is about 3 Km away from Kasteli.
On the outer walls of the church there are marble crosses and inscriptions that must belong to an older roman or byzantine building.
Inside there are frescoes that are very old.
It is believed that in the ancient times the place was an Asklipiion - a sacred medical center - or a sacred source of water.
