The Orthodox Church of St. Clement & St. Panteleimon at Plaosnik in Ohrid, Macedonia
Please support my channel and subscribe. Thanks. :)
It was built by the St. Clement in 863.
Twelfth Century Church of St. Panteleimon, Macedonia
The small Twelfth Century Byzantine Church of St. Panteleimon, patron saint of physicians, was constructed in 1164 (and rebuit, and destroyed, and rebuilt - unfortunately like most churches in Macedonia). As guide Goran stated in the beginning of this tour, If you have no interest in churches, Macedonia is not the place for you. Well... Churches do start to bore until a tidbit of information turns the tide. Oh, all right, two tidbits of information.
1. Fresco images here show EXPRESSION on their faces and realistic touches. Before this time, faces were always painted straight on without expression; and
2. The Church's stucco decoration is depicted on the reverse of a Macedonian 50 Denar banknote.
Feel free to skim through the video since I am the first to confess nodding off during church explanations. Steve and I light candles, look and leave...
The Renaissance started in San Panteleimon | Macedonia
The Church of St. Panteleimon in Gorno Nerezi, Republic of Macedonia, is a small 12th-century Byzantine church located in a monastery complex. The church and monastery are dedicated to St. Panteleimon, the patron saint of physicians.
The church was constructed in 1164 as a foundation of Alexius Angelus Comnenus, a son of Constantine Angelos and Theodora Komnene, a daughter of Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos.
The church has a domed cruciform core, three apses and a rectangular narthex. It is built of irregular stone blocks and brick embedded in thick layers of mortar. The surrounding monastery complex is enclosed by walls.
The frescoes in the church are famous examples of Comnenian Age Byzantine Art, depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ and various hagiographical illustrations. Similar compositions appear in the Latomou Monastery in Thessaloniki. The church was damaged by an earthquake in the 16th century. In the restoration that followed, some of the frescoes in the upper middle region have been repainted. The original marble iconostasis survived the earthquake, but lost its decorative plastic art.
In another restoration attempt in 1885, the larger part of the frescoes in the naos were painted over rather ineptly. During cleaning in 1923, some of the original 12th-century frescoes were restored.
The coloring, dramatic composition and purity of expression displayed in the frescoes are outstanding examples of Macedonian medieval monumental painting in the later 12th century.
The church's stucco decoration is depicted on the obverse of the Macedonian 50 denars banknote, issued in 1996.
Renaissance origins
According to Andrew Graham-Dixon, British art historian and writer, these frescoes with their ...physical, electric presence... are proof that there was more to Byzantine art than the formality and otherworldliness of its mosaic and icon tradition. In his book, Graham-Dixon questions 16th century Vasari's beliefs that Giotto di Bondone finally turned fresco painting away from the primitive influence of Byzantium. The frescoes contained within St. Panteleimon at Nerezi are not seen as static, they had the capacity to change into something more obviously human and realistic, anticipating the West's emphasis on depicting Christ as a man of flesh and blood by some 150 years. The lamentation of Christ fresco is described as being a fusion of life and death in a single image as Mary movingly mourns Jesus, cradling him between her legs. Graham-Dixon reminds that these frescoes from the 1160s precede Giotto's similar emotional frescoes from the Arena Chapel near Venice circa 1305. He concludes ...the Byzantine east played a much more formative role in the development of renaissance art than Vasari was prepared to concede.

Magnificent Macedonia Is One Of Europe's Undiscovered Holiday Highlights
It’s barely nine in the morning, but at the waterfront café on the shores of the sparkling, crystal-clear Lake Ohrid, the owner is recommending I try a bowl of traditional fish stew – for breakfast.
I’m spending a week in Macedonia and have already encountered baked snails, giant flaky pastries and huge sausages at random mealtimes, so by this point I just shrug and say, ‘When in Macedonia’ – fully expecting a hearty dish of heads and fins.
But I’m presented with a delicious light, lemony broth, with freshly caught lake trout for just £1.20, and I manage to tear myself away from the stunning view for the few moments it takes to slurp it up.
The historic town of Ohrid is probably the biggest tourist resort I’d never heard of. It’s in the south-west corner of the landlocked Balkan republic, which used to be part of former Yugoslavia, and visitors flock in their thousands from all over the world to enjoy its lake – one of the oldest and deepest in Europe – and charming Unesco heritage sights.
It’s dotted with Orthodox churches , including the stately St John at Kaneo, which perches prettily on a clifftop above the café.
I clambered up to it for great views across to Albania, and the reconstructed, terracotta-tiled Byzantine monastery of St Panteleimon. Dating from the 10th century AD, it has been fought over, demolished and rebuilt many times by the hordes of Romans, Slavs and Ottoman Turks which have invaded over the centuries.
I also visited the impressive Roman amphitheatre, dating from around 200BC, which used to play host to fierce gladiatorial battles. Though nowadays you’re more likely to see singers like Placido Domingo warbling on its main arena, as part of the city’s annual summer festival.
A road trip around Macedonia is a great way to explore this fascinating but underrated country.
Bordered by Greece, Albania, Serbia, Kosovo and Bulgaria, it has over 50 lakes, three vast national parks and several grape-producing regions, which result in some phenomenal, and phenomenally cheap, wine – look out for the robust red, Vranac
I flew in to the capital Skopje (birthplace of Mother Teresa ) which reminded me a bit of Las Vegas. It has some attractive old neighbourhoods – I particularly loved wandering around the Old Bazaar, a maze of polished stone streets lined with cafés, tempting bakeries and shops selling slightly odd things, like garlic shampoo.
But five years ago the government decided to give it more appeal in the wake of a huge earthquake which destroyed around 80 per cent of the city in 1963.
This resulted in a lot of money spent on building giant, towering statues of some of Macedonia’s historic figures – including Alexander the Great and former ruler King Philip II – usually on horseback, and inevitably sporting a magnificent moustache.
There are also some shiny white Caesar’s Palace-style structures lining the city’s river Vardar, which turn out to be new museums or civic buildings.
I preferred to lose myself in the authentic Green Market, a massive covered sprawl where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, order a tasty lahmacun – a flatbread wrap filled with minced beef and salad – or sit with a glass of black tea and watch the world go by.
Just 20 minutes outside the capital, I got back to nature. Matka Canyon is a vast, towering gorge, cut through by the Treska river, home to several medieval ruins and dozens of caves. I took a short boat trip to Vrelo Cave, and climbed down a succession of rather slippery steps into the dank gloom.
This limestone cave has been around for over 2,000 years, and its underground chambers are lined with dripping stalagmites and stalactites.
It’s also home to colonies of bats, which I heard squeaking unnervingly in the roof just a few metres above me.
A further 90-minute drive took me to the lushly forested Mavrovo National Park. In the winter you can ski in its mountains, but in summer you’re more likely to find hikers and campers, keen to spot endangered wildlife like lynx, wolves and even the occasional bear, which are all protected here.
I didn’t see any, but on a lovely wander round its lakefront I was drawn to the iconic, half-submerged 1850 Church of St Nicholas. It was covered by floodwater in the 1950s, but water levels are now controlled by dams, and the church pokes up above the surface.
My last port of call was the cultural city of Bitola, full of interesting monuments. I visited its central clock tower, built in the 16th century reportedly with 60,000 eggs mixed into the cement, which was meant to make the walls stronger.
There are also several large mosques (around 30 per cent of the population is Muslim) and the remains of an ancient Greek city, known as Heraclea.
There are magnificent mosaic floors here in the remnants of old palaces and churches.
60 Seconds on Site: Church of St. Sophia, Republic of North Macedonia
In October 2018, CyArk documented the 11th Century church of St. Sophia in the city of Ohrid in the Republic of North Macedonia. The church is famous for the incredible byzantine frescoes located within the interior.

Here is some more pictures and facts on their website about this amazing historical church :
Legends states that when St. Clement (Sv. Kliment) arrived in Ohrid 893 A.D., by order of King Boris I of Bulgaria, Clement built a larger church on top of the foundation of an early Christian basilica and dedicated it to St. Panteleimon (1). Legend also states that St. Clement prepared his own grave inside the monastery and upon his death his disciples buried him there. After his canonization, this Church and Monastery also became known as St. Clement.
The monastery served as a school, sometimes referred to as a university or academy, but mainly known as the Ohrid Literary School, where St. Clement initially taught the Glagolitic alphabet in order to further spread the word of Christianity. The creation of Glagolithic, the oldest Slavic alphabet, is commonly attributed to two monks, brothers from Thessaloniki, named Cyril and Methodious (Kiril i Metodij). Soon they would develop the Cyrillic alphabet and this would become the language of choice for teaching and for transcribing by both St. Clement and St. Naum in their schools
During the Ottoman Empire, the monastery underwent different reconstructions and was turned into a mosque. Reconstruction of St. Panteleimon as it stands today began in December 2000 and was completed in August 2002

Macedonia Kadedrali 2016????
Aziz Ohrid Kliment Katedrali....
Plaošnik or simply Plaoš (Macedonian: Плаошник, Плаош) is an archaeological site and holy place in Ohrid, 250 meters below Samuil's Fortress. In the future, the whole complex will have konaks (mansions) as in the time of Saint Clement of Ohrid, together with several surrounding objects.[1]
St. Clement’s Church[edit]
Main article: Saint Panteleimon, Ohrid
The church was built by St.Clement in 893 year on the foundation of an early Christian basilica, and dedicated to St.Panteleimon. It was here that the Ohrid Literary School, a center of Slavonic literary and cultural activity where it was educated more than 3,500 disciples. St. Clement was buried in this monastery, in the tomb which was built by his own hands.
After the advent of the Ottoman Turks, St. Clement’s Church was converted into a mosque, known as the Imaret Mosque, of which only a small enclosure remains. The mosque was built as an endowment and a memorial by Sinan Chelebi, member of the distinguished Turkish family of the Ohrizade.[2]
Apart from the monastery's many reconstructions during the Ottoman empire, it has recently undergone extensive reconstruction and excavation. Reconstruction started on 8 December 2000 and the physical church was fully reconstructed by 10 August 2002. Most of Saint Clement's relics were returned to the church.
World's Best Archaeology site Kokino | Macedonia
Kokino (Macedonian: Кокино) is a Bronze Age archaeological site in the Republic of Macedonia, approximately 30 km from the town of Kumanovo, and about 6 km from the Serbian border, in the Staro Nagoričane municipality. It is situated between about 1010 and 1030 m above sea level on the Tatićev Kamen (Татиќев камен) summit and covers an area of about 90 by 50 meters, overlooking the eponymous hamlet of Kokino.
It was discovered by archeologist Jovica Stankovski, director of the national museum in Kumanovo, in 2001. In 2002, Stankovski together with Gorje Cenev (who is the head of a planetarium at a Youth Cultural Center in Skopje) published the claim that the site contains a megalithic observatory and sacred site (мегалитска опсерваторија и светилиште).
The oldest archaeological finds date from about the 19th century BC, corresponding to the early European Bronze Age. It shows signs of occupation for the period from the 19th to the 7th centuries BC. Finds from the Middle Bronze Age (c. 16th to 14th centuries BC) are the most numerous (mainly ceramic vessels, stone-mills and a few molds). An agglomeration from the Iron Age was discovered in 2009.
The Kokino megalithic observatory should be distinguished from the wider Kokino archaeological site. While the observatory consists of two platforms of a combined area of about 5000 square meters, the site covers about 30 hectares. From this area, an abundant amount of fragments of ceramic vessels, dated to between the 19th and the 11th centuries BC. Also found was a mould for casting bronze axes, and a pendant. The remains of vessels filled with offerings were found deposited in cracks in the rocks, which gave rise to the interpretation of the site as a holy mountain.
The claimed archaeo-astronomical site itself consists of two platforms with an elevation difference of 19 m. The claim of the site representing an astronomical observatory was made by Stankovski and by Gjore Cenev in 2002. According to this interpretation, the site includes special stone markers used to track the movement of the Sun and Moon on the eastern horizon. The observatory used the method of stationary observation, marking positions of the Sun at the winter and summer solstice, as well as the equinox. Four stone seats or thrones are placed in a row on the lower platform. According to Cenev, A stone block with a marking on the upper platform marks the direction of sunrise on summer solstice when viewed from one of the seats.
Kokino was mentioned in a poster made by NASA's Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum in 2005.
The Cultural Heritage Protection Office of Macedonia's Ministry of Culture declared the site a property under temporary protection on 13 November 2008 (Decision nr. 08-1935/6). In 2009, Minister of Culture Elizabeta Kancheska-Milevska declared Kokino one of the priorities of the Ministry of Culture’s 2009 programme. In 2009, the Republic of Macedonia also suggested the site be inscribed on the World Heritage Site.
