Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the renovated Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh at the Tsarskoye Selo museum complex in Pushkin, Monday. Putin was joined by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill along with members of the Orthodox clergy.
Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov joined Patriarch Kirill as he consecrated the church in celebration of the 700th anniversary of St. Sergius of Radonezh's birth.
The Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh was first consecrated in 1903, but following the Russian Revolution of 1917 the church was closed and its domes removed. It was then returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 2012, resulting in its restoration.

Sergiev Posad, Moscow Oblast, Russia tour
Sergiyev Posad (Russian: Сергиев Посад; IPA: [ˈsʲɛrgʲɪɪf pɐˈsat]) is a city and the administrative center of Sergiyevo-Posadsky District in Moscow Oblast, Russia.
Sergiyev Posad grew in the 15th century around one of the greatest of Russian monasteries, the Trinity Lavra established by St. Sergius of Radonezh, still one of the largest monasteries in Russia. Town status was granted to Sergiyev Posad in 1742. The town's name, alluding to St. Sergius, has strong religious connotations. Soviet authorities changed it first to just Sergiyev in 1919, and then to Zagorsk in 1930, in memory of the revolutionary Vladimir Mikhailovich Zagorsky.
The original name was restored in 1991.

Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church
On June 9, Dr. Paul Coyer, a Forbes foreign policy columnist, delivered an Intermarium Series lecture at The Institute of World Politics entitled Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church. The lecture, which was sponsored by IWP's Kościuszko Chair of Polish Studies, focused on a recent article by the speaker, entitled (Un)Holy Alliance: Vladimir Putin, The Russian Orthodox Church and Russian Exceptionalism.
Dr. Coyer began by noting that it can be easy to sympathize with the Russian Orthodox Church, which claims to preserve tradition and uphold moral values. He then described the complexities and various dimensions of the Church's involvement with the Russian state.
Orthodoxy is not viewed by Russians in the same way that religion is widely viewed in the West. For example, Dr. Coyer noted, 30 percent of respondents in Russia who self-identified as Orthodox simultaneously also identified as atheists. Dr. Coyer explained that Orthodoxy in post-Soviet Russia is a matter of culture and identity, not necessarily the belief in a Supreme Being.
In addition, the speaker described Vladimir Putin's attempts to increase the strength of the Russian Orthodox Church, with over 20,000 churches being built from 2000 onwards. He argued that this resurgence in the Church's strength added to Russian exceptionalism and nationalism. Russia has an advantage in its citizens' mindsets, in that they are more fiercely dedicated to their homeland. By contrast, a 2015 Pew Research Center poll found that Europeans overwhelmingly would not be willing to fight for their countries.
Dr. Coyer maintained that, even without Putin, the conflict between Russia and the West will not fade away. One of the reasons is that culture, including that of Russian Orthodoxy, is at stake. He asserted that a serious confrontation of the West with Russia is increasingly likely.
Dr. Coyer covers international affairs, with a focus on Eurasia, in his Forbes column. He has spent time in academia, having graduate degrees from Yale University and the London School of Economics. His PhD, from the LSE, was on Sino-American relations and diplomatic history. From 2007-2013, he was a visiting scholar at the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies at the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and he served as a visiting lecturer on Chinese foreign policy and Sino-American relations at the University of Florence, Italy, in 2011 and 2012. He has lived and worked in several locations around the world, including Shanghai, where he did macro-economic research on China's development and edited a book on the Shanghai stock exchange that was jointly published by JPMorgan and the South China Morning Post, and in Hong Kong, where he did a brief stint in banking for Deutsche Bank.

STORYLINE:
Vladimir Putin on Wednesday became the first Kremlin leader to visit Israel, capping a historic rapprochement between two nations that were once bitter enemies across the Cold War divide.
Putin, on his first Middle East trip, was also hoping to restore his country's profile as a major player in the region and worldwide, bringing with him a fresh proposal for a Mideast peace conference to be held in Moscow in the autumn.
Considering the history of relations and the fact that there were times that we were on one side and Russia was entirely on the
other side ... (the visit) indicates the significant change that took place between the two countries, Israeli Vice Premier Ehud
Olmert said as he stood on the airport tarmac waiting to greet Putin.
The Soviet Union had supported Israel during the Jewish state's early years, but relations soon deteriorated - and eventually collapsed - as Israel increasingly allied itself with the United States.
Moscow cut off ties with Israel in 1967 in the context of a Mideast war and strongly backed the Arab states.
In many of its wars with its Arab neighbours, Israel found itself facing Soviet-trained pilots flying Soviet MiGs fighter jets.
Moscow also barred Jews from leaving, jailing many who demanded the right to emigrate to Israel.
As the Soviet Union was collapsing in the early 1990s, the two nations restored ties, and Moscow loosened the emigration restrictions, prompting more than a million Russian speakers to immigrate here.
Relations have been improved by Putin, who took office in 2000, as he tries to push Russia's economic interests abroad and evoke parallels between Israel's conflict with Palestinian militants and Russia's campaign against Chechen rebels.
But there are strains as well, including Russia's determination to push ahead with a missile sale to Syria, one of Israel's bitterest enemies.
Other potential sore points include Moscow's nuclear aid to Iran and signs of rising anti-Semitism in Russia.

Thousands of Russian Orthodox believers filled Moscow's largest Orthodox church, Christ the Saviour Cathedral, on Saturday night, where the Easter service was conducted for the first time by the new Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
The service, which started an hour before midnight, was attended by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his wife Svetlana, and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, as well as many other government officials and members of the Russian Parliament (Duma).
An hour and a half earlier, the flame from Jerusalem's Holy Fire had arrived at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport and was brought to the cathedral, where the Patriarch was the first to light his candle from it.
Priests then lit candles and passed them on to members of the congregation.
The Patriarch greeted Medvedev and his wife, and Prime Minister Putin, and, following Russian tradition, they exchanged Easter presents - Easter eggs and icons.

Tremendous blow if Putin loses Ukrainian Orthodox Church MP
Remarks by Dr. Taras Kuzio, Senior Research Associate, Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies, University of Toronto, Canada, 6 February 2015.
- Sometimes solutions to difficult problems can be very simple
- Proposal to the Ukrainian government: Demand a reregistration of religious parishes, churches in Ukraine. To the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Moscow Patriarchate (Українська православна церква Московського патріархату, УПЦ МП) should be reregistered as the Russian Orthodox Church (Русская Православная Церковь, Російська православна церква) because it is a fake Ukrainian church
- Opinion polls show more people support the Kyiv Patriarchate opposed to the Moscow Patriarchate. It will loose members, clergy. Tremendous national security improvement in Ukraine
- There are more Orthodox parishes collectively in Ukraine than Russia. Should Russia lose the Ukrainian Church it would be a tremendous blow to Putin and to the Russian church.
- Patriarch Filaret should step down, lots of baggage
Thank you to St. Vladimir Institute (Lidia Smilka) at the University of Toronto for the recording venue

The regional harvest fest took place in the town of Salsk in honour of the Rostov region's record-breaking harvest this year. Salsk managed to collect 8.5 million tons of cereal and leguminous early crops.
In view of import restrictions on meat, dairy and other products from the EU, USA, Canada, Australia and Norway, Rostov Governor Vasiliy Golubev announced that he was confident Russian farmers would be able to ensure food security for the country.
Russia first opened up its food market to foreign goods in the 1990s, exposing its farmers to global competition. By imposing a one-year ban on agricultural imports from the United States and the European Union, the Russian Federation hopes to stimulate domestic production and to retaliate against Western economies for the imposition of sanctions in other sectors.

Ukraine: Putin meets Patriarch Kirill I at Dormiton Cathedral
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Dormition Cathedral in Kiev-Pechersk Lavra on Saturday. At the cathedral he met the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill I, among other orthodox clerics. Putin is visiting Ukraine as part of the celebration of the 1025th anniversary of Christianity in Russia and Ukraine, also called the Rus Baptism.
The head of state laid a bouquet of flowers on the grave of Peter Stolypin, bowed at the Cross of St. Andrew and kissed the shrine, which is now exhibited at the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
Bishop Borodyansky Varsonofy expressed his gratitude for Russia's help in the reconstruction of the Dormition Cathedral. According to the bishop, monks took an active part in the temple's reconstruction. There are about 180 monks living now in the abode.
Earlier that day Putin also met with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and thanked him for the opportunity to meet on such an important occasion in the Ukrainian Orthodox Calendar. The Russian president also reaffirmed Russia's support for Ukraine's decision on further economic integration.
