Inside a rocky, uneven but green area surrounding the villages Makrychori, Elafochori, Disvato & Stegno there is still a humble workshop of prayer, true oasis in today’s era.
This is the Holy Women Convent of the Transfiguration of Sotiros of Nikiton. It is an outpost of the Metropolis of Philippi, that the spiritual radiation dominates the entire eastern region.
Located right next to the now almost deserted village Nikites from whom it was known as a popular name Monastery of Nikiton.
From the axis of the highway Kavala - Xanthi and the crossroads created at the height of the intersection with the road Chrisoupolis is just 11km.
The whole area around the monastery is mountainous and barren, now almost completely abandoned from residents of which went to Kavala and Chrysoupolis in the first half of the 1960s. So, here the foundation of the monastery in recent decades has really been a driving impetus in the whole space and a hope of revitalizing derelict area.
It was dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ from the miraculous image that found here so adventurous.
The history of the monastery and the first form of this is just beginning in 1969. Then founded his first pilgrimage, known as the two women's retreat monastery with which resolved and acute problem posed to local residents from claiming the miraculous image of our Christ.
Thessaloniki - Rotunda mosaics
The Rotunda of St George Thessaloniki / Greece (view outside) is centrally planned and owes its name to its shape. It was built c.AD 306, in the reign of Gelerius Caesar, either as a temple of Zeus or Kabeiros or as the Emperor's mausoleum. It stands on the axis of the monumental avenue that linked Galerius' triumphal arch and the palace to the south. During the 5th Century, the christians carried out the necessary changes and reconfigurations to convert the building into a church, which they dedicated to the Asomatoi (Archangels). The orig. structure has a diameter of 24.5 metres, the walls were 6.30m thick and interrupted in the interior by eight rectangular bays, the south bay forming the main entrance. A massive brick dome, 30m high at the top crowned the whole building. The christians opened and widened the east bay and made a sanctuary, also they opened all the other bays to give access to the ambulatory, they built around the monument. At the same period the church was ornamented with mosaics. When an earthquake brought down parts of the monument incl. the sanctuary apse, the latter was restored, supported with 2 buttresses and decorated with a fresco of the Ascension (9th Century). Rotunda was converted into a mosque in 1590/91 by sheik Süleyman Hortaji Effendi, who gave his own name to his new foundation. The earthquake struck the city in 1978, caused extensive damage to the Rotunda. The restoration work necessitated major interventions in both the building an its decoration, but most of it has now been completed.
Monastery of Philanthropenoi on the Island of Ioannina
It is the most important monastery of all on the island in the lake of Ioannina. It was named after the noble family of the Philantropenoi who settled in Ioannina from Constantinople, after its seize in 1204.
The wall paintings, which are the work of anonymous painters, impress with its plethora of representations and are considered masterpieces of post-Byzantine painting. The wealth of representations and the quality of the painting make a unique total. What is of particular interest is the representation of the ancient Greek philosophers, who are painted on the wall of the southern paranarthex. Only the ruins of the altar and a complex of cells are still preserved today.
