Remote monastery blown up by Soviets restored by parachuters
(27 Jul 2019) LEAD IN:
A remote monastery on a tiny island in the middle of a Russian lake is being rebuilt by volunteers who parachute onto the island each year.
One of the oldest churches in northern Russia, the Spaso Kamenny Monastery was blown up by the Soviet Regime in the 1930's.
For the past decade the parachuters have been painstakingly restoring it to its former glory.
STORY-LINE
Kubensky Lake, northern Russia.
On this small island in the north of Russia, about 5 kilometres from the Vologda Oblast mainland, sits one of the oldest monasteries in the country, and one of the first to be built in stone.
Located in Kubensky lake the Spaso Kamenny Monastery - or 'Saviour on Stone' has weathered many storms during its 760 year history.
Apart from some outbuildings housing church equipment and a temporary eating area, the monastery is the sole occupant of this 120 by 70 metre island island.
A handful of visitors come during the summer months - either to visit this magnificent building or to attend services which restarted in 2010 - along with a restoration programme,
In 2010, when the 750th anniversary of the monastery was celebrated, a refectory church was built and the bell tower was restored, and the Liturgy began to be celebrated, says resident abbot, Father Dionisy Vozdvizhensky.
As legend has it, in 1260 the Prince of Belozersk was washed up onto the island's shore following a storm. At the time, the island was inhabited by hermits.
To show his gratitude, he ordered the construction of a wooden church.
It is a very famous monastery, very significant in a history, which had a large number of followers. Such a place can't be forgotten. Because holy patrons of the monastery didn't forget it, they pray for this place, explains Vozdvizhensky.
In 1774, a powerful fire destroyed almost all of the wooden buildings, after which the monastery remained closed until it was rebuilt in 1801.
In 1925, during the Soviet regime, the monastery was transformed into a prison, but 12 years later that too was closed down and the building was blown up.
Locals say it was done to get bricks for the construction of the local house of culture.
However, an attempt to remove the building material from the island was not successful. The wreckage of the old monastery lies to this day on the island.
Since 1991, a group of enthusiasts backed by heritage funding and under the guidance of a Vologda resident, Alexander (Sasha) Pligin began the restoration of the Spaso-Kamenny monastery.
The restoration continues to this day.
There were ruins because a long time ago someone blew it up (monastery) on the island, which was called Spas-Kamen. Sasha Pligin (a paratrooper and volunteer restoring the monastery) was coming and restoring it. I remember him and other men on tractors dragging some equipment there. The water was flooding everything and it was necessary to get onto the island, says Oleg Boikov, senior instructor of Vologda flying club.
Pligin was parachuter and in memory of his work a number of restorers and members of the local parachute club jump to the island every year to mark the opening of the restoration season.
The fact that we make a jump almost every year is a tribute. A tribute to the man who is associated with parachuting, and with our history. This is why we make these jumps. says Evgeniy Shpakovskiy, a member of Vologda flying club.
After Pilgin's death in 2014, his widow Nadezhda Aleksandrovna continued his work restoring the monastery.

STORYLINE:
Christians across Moscow went to Church on Friday morning to mark Russian Orthodox Christmas.
The Russian Orthodox church uses the old Julian calendar instead of the 16th century Gregorian calendar adopted by Catholics and Protestants and which is also commonly used in secular life around the world.
In a reference to the Asian tsunami, Priest, Dmitry Rumyantsev said this year, worshippers were praying for the souls of those who died in this terrible catastrophe.
Also on Friday, outside the Kremlin, Muscovites attended a folk-dance performance of the Jesus story.
On Thursday evening, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, Alexy II, held the main Christmas Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.
The Patriarch appealed for Russians to give money to help the victims of the tsunami.
Also on Thursday, President Vladimir Putin said that Russia would send additional aid to countries ravaged by the disaster.
At a meeting with Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexy II, Putin said he had spoken with leaders of the worst-hit Indian Ocean countries and said about 20-thousand tons of grain, along with water-purification equipment and field hospitals, were being dispatched.
Twenty doctors and epidemiologists were also being flown out.
Russia, whose Ministry of Emergency Situations is highly regarded for its quick response to disasters worldwide, was one of the first countries to send aid shipments to parts of Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and other Indian Ocean countries.
Within a day of the tsunami, Russia had sent three planeloads of tents, blankets, water-purification equipment as well as rescue workers.

Suzdal - Cathedrals and Monastery
Suzdal is a town and the administrative center of Suzdalsky District in Vladimir Oblast, Russia, located on the Kamenka River, 26 kilometers (16 mi) north of the city of Vladimir, the administrative center of the oblast. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 10,535.
Suzdal is one of the oldest Russian towns. In the 12th century it became the capital of the principality, while Moscow was merely one of its subordinate settlements.
Currently, Suzdal is the smallest of the Russian Golden Ring towns with a population of approximately 10,000, but it is a major tourist attraction.
Several of its monuments are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.[
The Saviour Monastery of St. Euthymius was founded in the 14th century, and grew in importance in the 16th and 17th centuries after donations by Vasili III, Ivan IV and the Pozharsky family, a noble dynasty of the region. Among the buildings erected during this period were the Assumption Church, the bell tower, the surrounding walls and towers, and the seven-domed Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour. The cathedral was built in the style of the Grand Duchy of Vladimir-Suzdal. Its interior contains restored frescoes by the school of Gury Nikitin of Kostroma, dating from 1689. The tomb of Dmitry Pozharsky lies by the cathedral wall.
[
The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Suzdal, Russia, is a World Heritage Site. It is one of the eight White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal., and one of the most complex monuments of Russian medieval architecture.
It was originally constructed during the reign of Vladimir II Monomakh during the late 11th century. The Cathedral of the Nativity is surrounded by a ring of earthen walls in an oxbow of Kamenka River. It is notable for being the first city cathedral not built for the exclusive use of the knyaz or his relatives. The cathedral contains the remains of a son of Yuri Dolgoruki, knyazes of the Shuisky family and others.[

SUMMARY
=======
Nicholas II or Nikolai II (Russian: Николай II Алекса́ндрович, tr. Nikolai II Aleksandrovich; 18 May [O.S. 6 May] 1868 – 17 July 1918), known as Saint Nicholas the Passion-Bearer in the Russian Orthodox Church, was the last Emperor of Russia, ruling from 1 November 1894 until his forced abdication on 2 March 1917. His reign saw the fall of the Russian Empire from one of the foremost great powers of the world to economic and military collapse. He was given the nickname Nicholas the Bloody or Vile Nicholas by his political adversaries due to the Khodynka Tragedy, anti-Semitic pogroms, Bloody Sunday, the violent suppression of the 1905 Russian Revolution, the execution of political opponents, and his perceived responsibility for the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905). Soviet historians portrayed Nicholas as a weak and incompetent leader whose decisions led to military defeats and the deaths of millions of his subjects.Russia was defeated in the 1904–1905 Russo-Japanese War which saw the annihilation of the reinforcing Russian Baltic Fleet after being sent on its round-the-world cruise at the naval Battle of Tsushima, off the coasts of Korea and Japan, the loss of Russian influence over Manchuria and Korea, and the Japanese annexation to the north of South Sakhalin Island. The Anglo-Russian Entente was designed to counter the German Empire's attempts to gain influence in the Middle East, but it also ended the Great Game of confrontation between Russia and the United Kingdom. When all Russian diplomatic efforts to prevent the First World War (1914–1918) failed, Nicholas approved the Imperial Russian Army mobilization on 30 July 1914 which gave Imperial Germany formal grounds to declare war on Russia on 1 August 1914. An estimated 3.3 million Russians were killed in the First World War. The Imperial Russian Army's severe losses, the High Command's incompetent management of the war efforts, and lack of food and supplies on the home front were all leading causes of the fall of the House of Romanov.
Following the February Revolution of 1917, Nicholas abdicated on behalf of himself and his son and heir, the Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich. He and his family were imprisoned and transferred to Tobolsk in late summer 1917. On 30 April 1918, Nicholas, Alexandra, and their daughter Maria were handed over to the local Ural Soviet council in Ekaterinburg (renamed Sverdlovsk during the Soviet era); the rest of the captives followed on 23 May. Nicholas and his family were executed by their Bolshevik guards on the night of 16/17 July 1918. The remains of the imperial family were later found, exhumed, identified and re-interred with elaborate State and Church ceremony in St. Petersburg on 17 July 1998 – 80 years later.
In 1981, Nicholas, his wife, and their children were recognized as martyrs by the Russian Orthodox Church Outsid ...

SUMMARY
=======
The Slavic Native Faith, also known as Rodnovery, is a modern Pagan religion. Classified as a new religious movement, its practitioners harken back to the historical belief systems of the Slavic peoples of Central and Eastern Europe. Rodnovery is a widely accepted self-descriptor within the community, although there are Rodnover organisations which further characterise the religion as Orthodoxy, Old Belief and Vedism.
Rodnovers typically regard their religion as a faithful continuation of ancient beliefs that survived as folk religion or as conscious double belief following the Christianisation of the Slavs in the Middle Ages. Rodnovery draws upon surviving historical and archaeological sources, folk religion and even non-Slavic sources such as Hinduism. Rodnover theology and cosmology may be described as pantheism and polytheism—worship of the supreme God of the universe and of the multiple gods, ancestors and spirits of nature identified through Slavic culture. Adherents usually meet together in groups to conduct religious ceremonies. These typically entail the invocation of gods, sacrifices and the pouring of libations, dances and a communal meal.
Rodnover ethical thinking emphasises the good of the collective over the rights of the individual. The religion is patriarchal, and attitudes towards sex and gender are generally conservative. Rodnovery has developed distinctive strains of political and identitary philosophy. Rodnover organisations often characterise themselves as ethnic religions, emphasising that the religion is bound to Slavic ethnicity. This often manifests as ethnic nationalism, opposition to miscegenation and the belief in the fundamental difference of racial groups. Rodnovers often glorify Slavic history, criticising the impact of Christianity in Slavic countries and arguing that these nations will play a central place in the world's future. Rodnovers share a strong feeling that their religion represents a paradigmatic shift which will overcome Western thought and what they call mono-ideologies.
The contemporary organised Rodnovery movement arose from a multiplicity of sources and charismatic leaders just at the brink of the collapse of the Soviet Union and spread rapidly by the mid-1990s and the 2000s. Antecedents are to be found in late 18th- and 19th-century Slavic Romanticism, which glorified the pre-Christian beliefs of Slavic societies. Active religious practitioners devoted to establishing Slavic Native Faith appeared in Poland and Ukraine in the 1930s and 1940s. Following the Second World War and the establishment of communist states throughout the Eastern Bloc, new variants were established by Slavic emigrants living in Western countries, being later introduced in Central and Eastern European countries after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In recent times, the movement has been increasingly studied in academic scholarship.
