STORYLINE:
A church service was held on Sunday evening in commemoration of the devastating Allied bombing of Dresden in World War II that killed an estimated 35-thousand residents 60 years ago.
In a sign of reconciliation, clergy from Coventry Cathedral in England - gutted by German bombing in 1940 - presented a cross to Dresden's Frauenkirche, or Church of Our Lady.
The Dean of Coventry Cathedral, which was itself destroyed by German bombers in 1940 - said the anniversary should not be about hatred or revenge. The Very Reverend Irvine said Coventry and Dresden had both suffered the devastating effects of war.
The Church of Our Lady was left in ruins for decades by communist East Germany as an anti-war memorial, but has been lavishly rebuilt since Germany's 1990 reunification.
On February 13, 1945, the British RAF Bomber Command launched a devastating raid on Dresden, destroying the city which was known as The Balcony of Europe for its stunning architecture.
The following day US bombers launched a second attack. Official estimates suggest that around 35 thousand people died but some claim the figure was closer to 400 thousand.
Services were also held at the Kreuzkirche, or Church of the Holy Cross.
There the priests delivered prayers in both German and English.
The Kreuzkirche is Dresden's main evangelist church.

Holy Cross German Christmas Service 2017
On Sunday, December 10, at 6 PM, we gathered at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Davenport, Iowa, for a German-language Christmas service using the order of Vespers, with hymns by Martin Luther. The Rev. Isaac Johnson of Risen Christ Lutheran Church in Davenport was gracious enough to preach for us.
A Baroque Masterpiece. The Royal Church of San Lorenzo, Turin, Italy
Un capolavoro di stile barocco in Italia. La Chiesa Reale di San Lorenzo, Torino
The Royal Church of Saint Lawrence (Italian: Real Chiesa di San Lorenzo) is a Baroque-style church in Turin, it is close to the Royal Palace of Turin. The church that stands today was designed and built by Guarino Guarini during 1668-1687.
History
The Duke Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy was one of the leaders of the Hapsburg armies of his cousin Philip II of Spain; they decisively defeated the French armies in the Battle of Saint-Quentin in Northern France on 10 August 1557, the Feast of St. Lawrence (San Lorenzo), which affected the outcome of the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis; in which, the Savoy, including Turin, was returned to the rule of the mercenary duke. That the Battle occurred on the Saint's feast instigated Phillip's denomination and design of the palace of El Escorial. Emmanuel Philibert, on his return to Turin in 1562, renovated the old ducal chapel of Santa Maria ad Presepae, which is still present near the entrance, and erected this church dedicated to St. Lawrence. Construction of the contemporary church began in 1634.
The architect Guarino Guarini was a great innovator in Baroque principles first developed by the great Roman Baroque architect Francesco Borromini, in particular the play with optical effects and organic deconstruction of the classical orders and principles of column and entablature. However, in San Lorenzo Guarini took these further. The ground plan is a kind of square which becomes an octagon at the level of the entablatures above the columns only to change again to become a Greek cross at the level of the pendentives of the vaults. Again, the base of the dome is circular in plan yet the lantern above it octagonal. The dome itself is supported by eight ribs forming a lattice similar to those found in mosques and Romanesque churches in Spain. To this superposition of - by the standards of convention - contradictory central plans is added an elliptical choir. The high altar, separated from the nave by a convex and concave archway receives natural light from a hidden dome, devices drawn from the other key Roman Baroque architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Dresden's Frauenkirche | Euromaxx - Landmarks of Change (2)
The new series continues with Dresden's main landmark, the once flattened Frauenkirche of Church of Our Lady. First completed in 1743, it was restored according to the original plans of Baroque-era architect George Bähr after being fire-bombed by the Allies in 1945. An worldwide appeal for funds raised more than 110 million Euros. The local media talked of the miracle of Dresden.

Dresden's historic Christmas market kicks off the festive season
LEADIN:
The festive season has begun in the German city of Dresden, with plenty of decorations and mulled wine at the city's famous Christmas market.
Over the next few weeks, tens of thousands of people are expected to visit the market to eat, drink and be merry.
STORYLINE:
It is a tradition that dates back centuries.
The annual Christmas market opens with a procession from the Dresden Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross) to the main market square in the city.
A woman dressed as an angel and a man dressed as a miner, both with candles in their hands, lead the marching band.
And before you know it the city's bakers appear with an oversize Christmas cake.
This is the traditional opening of the Dresden Striezelmarkt, the longest running Christmas market in Germany and one of the longest running markets in the world.
As the Deputy major of Dresden, Dirk Hilbert, explains, this year is a special year.
Dresden Striezelmarkt has been held since 1434 so we are celebrating the 580th jubilee this year, he says.
The market takes it name from the Struezel, a typical cake from this area, he adds.
The market started by order from Emperor Friedrich II who stated that a market should be held in Dresden in the days before Christmas so people would be able to get their hands on some meat for the coming festivities.
The market has grown from then and now more than 240 traders set up their stalls to sell anything from Christmas decorations to food and of course - mulled wine.
The market runs through December 24 and over the next weeks tens of thousands of people will visit the stalls.
I don't really know anyone that doesn't like to come to any of the markets here in the city, says Hilbert
People come here to meet friends or colleagues and drink mulled wine and spend time together and celebrate the advent period.
Earlier in the day, the start of the market was celebrated with a service in the Dresden Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross), which dates back to the 13th century.
As per centuries of tradition, the Church's famous boys' choir sang the traditional Christmas songs and hymns.
The boys' choir is itself an institution in the city, dating back some 700 years.
But it's when night falls and the lights twinkle that the market starts to sparkle.
Angela Nussdorfer has come all the way from Munich and she is not disappointed: I think it is really great, like a fairytale, like a dream. It is really really nice.
Rosita Voss has lived in Dresden her whole life and she comes to the market opening every year: We think it is a heavenly tradition. We are real Dresdeners and we stay real Dresdeners and we are happy when we are together with all the other people here.
Lisa Marie-Ramm also likes to come on the opening day and night to enjoy the atmosphere.
The decorations are great. There is always a lot happening on the opening night, lots of people come. It is really nice, she says.
The Striezelmarkt in Dresden is open daily from 10am to 9pm. Entry is free.

The Beautiful Frauenkirche in Dresden (originally Church of Our Lady) is a Lutheran church of the Baroque and the formative monumental building of Dresden's Neumarkt. It is considered as splendid testimony of the Protestant church architecture and has one of the largest stone church domes north of the Alps.
The Dresden Beautiful Frauenkirche was from 1726 to 1743 after a design by George Baehr built. In the air war of World War II, it was during the air raids on Dresden on the night of 13 to 14 February 1945 in Dresden by the raging fire storm heavily damaged and crashed on the morning of 15 February burned and collapsed.
The Dresden Beautiful Frauenkirche was one of the most important religious buildings of the German Protestant Baroque. The central building of Bahr wore made entirely of sandstone domed. The Dresden dome fascinated above all by its concave (curved inwards) form at the bottom of which a bell recalled. This was unique in the world and brought the building the name the Stone Bell one. They rested on eight pillars in the interior, which were somewhat close to the diagonal than the principal axes and so a cross shape hinted.
The Beautiful Frauenkirche had a total height of 91.23 meters. She was 41.96 meters wide and 50.02 meters long. The dome began at a height of about 40 meters, and the lantern - the dome cap - opened in height of 62 meters above the Neumarkt in Dresden. From the Saxon sandstone stone masonry dome was below an outer diameter of 26.15 meters, up from about 10 meters and weighed about 12,000 tons.
After the three air raids on Dresden by bombers of the British RAF and the American USAAF on 13 and 14 February 1945 burned the Beautiful Frauenkirche completely. Some windows had been bricked up, the others were at Neumarkt-hitting bombs burst or damaged by the intense heat. The Beautiful Frauenkirche was the firestorm exposed defenseless, the most raged in the city center with a fire heat up to 1200 degrees Celsius.
The reconstruction of the Beautiful Frauenkirche was much faster than originally expected in the autumn of 2005 completed because the donations exceeded all expectations. Thus, the outer shape of the Beautiful Frauenkirche was restored in August 2004 not as planned in 2005.
On 13 April 2004, the last stone of the main dome of the Beautiful Frauenkirche was used. On 22 June 2004, the construction of the wood studded with copper cupola with the gilded cross on which was lantern on the stone dome placed and restored the former outer appearance. The Beautiful Frauenkirche is now the final height of 91.24 meters.
The lowest point of the Beautiful Frauenkirche, the apex of the cross-shaped barrel vault, is an altar stone of black Irish limestone. It was created by Anish Kapoor, a British-based artist with Jewish mother and an Indian father. Since then, the Beautiful Frauenkirche part of the International Cross of Nails Community. Since the consecration of the Church of Our Lady is the cross on the altar of the main church.
The new stones of the Beautiful Frauenkirche, however darken over time and then no longer differ from the original stones. A special treatment as comparatively the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, was omitted.
The Beautiful Frauenkirche has a length of 50.02 m (east-west direction) and a width of 41.96 m (north-south). Your total height, including the Tower Cross, is 91.23 m. Inside, the dome ceiling extends to a height of 36.65 m. The dome is, without starting the dome and lantern, 24 m high. Its outer diameter is 26.15 m, the dome masonry is strong between 1.19 m and 1.75 m. The visitor platform on the tower lantern is located at a height of 67.06 meters.

With enough time to kill in Prague before my departure back to the U.S., I decided to take advantage of a day trip to Dresden via the Student Agency bus. The bus roundtrip cost me about 50 U.S. and was worth doing. Arriving at the main train station in Dresden I made a short walk to the city center stopping at the Holy Cross Church then to the Neumarkt where I saw a few sites being excavated from the ruins of the Allied invasion of the city during World War 2/ WWII. In this area, you will see the statue of Martin Luther in front of the rebuilt Frauenkirche, which was also destroyed in WW2. My favorite part of my self guided walk around the city was along the Elbe River from Bruhls Terrace to the Katholische Hofkirche. From there I made my final stop at the fascinating Zwinger Palace that made me feel brought back in time to classier days :) For lunch I had sausage with curry and a German brew. For several hours off-camera I walked back in the direction of the train station and hung out at the local mall due to being severely cold.
