The newly founded Ukrainian Orthodox Church held its first Christmas mass in the Ukraine capital of Kiev. The service comes just hours after church leaders formally received a decree of independence at a ceremony in Istanbul, ending more than three centuries of Russian influence. Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko had campaigned for the split, which has provoked anger in Moscow.

Ukrainian Winter Holidays (Canada, 1942) / Українські зимові свята (Канада, 1942)
Ukrainian communities of the Canadian prairies still follow the Julian calendar and celebrate Christmas on the seventh of January. Traditional foods are prepared for the holy Christmas Eve supper, eaten when the first star of the evening appears. Then traditional carols and light-hearted dances in gay costume continue the festivities. In striking contrast, on Christmas Day the Ukrainians gather at the Greek Orthodox church to worship in a solemn service with ancient ritual.

The Kyiv Ukraine Temple
Here is a brief slide show that I created of the Kyiv Ukraine Temple from pictures that I had the pleasure of taking myself. I feel that these photos along with the beautiful music appropriately show the beauty and magnificence of this LDS temple. Looking at these pictures helps me ponder on the incredible I experience I had as a full-time representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 2010-2012. Hopefully this slide show brings the peace to others that it does to me.

On 7th January Ukraine celebrates Orthodox Christmas, and the whole country pauses the modern rush of life and gets back to old traditions. Apart from the melodic carols, special cuisine is one of the main features of Ukrainian Orthodox Christmas. On the eve of the holiday, Ukrainian families eat Kutya — in order to receive blessings for the whole year ahead. In this story, we'll tell how Ukrainians keep their mood festive, even close to the frontline.

In the darkness of the eve before Pascha, or Easter, Ukrainian Greek Catholics gather at liturgy to continue to venerate the dead Christ through the the icon of the plaschenytsia. Known as a nadhrobne, it is a service at the tomb. People bow and venerate the cloth icon as they arrive, and the choir chants from the psalms and other prayers. The priest eventually takes the plaschenytsia and places it on the altar.
The celebrants change their vestments from red for mourning to white for celebration, beginning a part of the service known as the Resurrection Matins. An icon of the risen Christ is presented to the faithful, among lit candles signaling the light of Christ brought back into the world. A procession leaves the church, into the dark streets, to indeed bring the image of Christ into the world. When the procession returns to the church, the priests knocks on the closed door of the church, and proclaims for the first time the message, Khrystos voskres! Christ is risen! The community is blessed three times with the message, Khrystos voskres! and they answer each time Voistynu Voskrese! He is risen indeed!
The service continues inside with the continued singing of Matins and the celebration of the Divine Liturgy.
