The Resurrection of Russian Bell Ringing Following the Collapse of Communism
The Bells Are Ringing Out (1996): A profile of Russia's bell ringers.

Synopsis: One man stands attached to nine bells by a web of ropes. Arms, hands and feet yank the ropes to create a symphony of sound. This is Pavel Markelov, guardian of an ancient Russian tradition - bell ringing. Twelve months ago, St. Sophia was a silent wreck. Now her belfries ring out fortissimo. The end of Communist rule has seen a renaissance in bell ringing, but it has also highlighted a shortage not only of bell ringers but also of bells. A factory which manufactures sheet metal for rockets is now making bells as well. In the new Russia, the traditions of the past look for harmony with the technology of the future.

Russian Church Bells Return
September 2008, Correspondent David A. Grout
For more than 70 years, a set of 17 Russian church bells hung in a Harvard University tower. They were purchased in 1930 by an American businessman who saved them from being melted down for scrap. In 2008 they were returned to the Danilov monastery in Moscow.

Descent Of The Blessed Holy Fire In Jerusalem 2017
Descent of the blessed fire 2017 Jerusalem
Descent of the Holy Fire in the Church of the Resurrection of Christ. Patriarch of Jerusalem and All Palestine Theophilus III conveyed it to the assembled. 15/04/17
Orthodox tradition holds that the Holy Fire happens annually on the day preceding Orthodox Pascha (Orthodox Easter), in which a blue light emanates within Jesus Christ's tomb (usually rising from the marble slab covering the stone bed believed to be that upon which Jesus' body was placed for burial) now in the Holy Sepulchre, which eventually forms a column containing a form of fire, from which candles are lit, which are then used to light the candles of the clergy and pilgrims in attendance. The fire is also said to spontaneously light other lamps and candles around the church. Pilgrims and clergy claim that the Holy Fire does not burn them.
While the Patriarch is inside the chapel kneeling in front of the stone, there is darkness but far from silence outside. One hears a rather loud mumbling, and the atmosphere is very tense. When the Patriarch comes out with the two candles lit and shining brightly in the darkness, a roar of jubilation resounds in the Church.
Thousands of pilgrims as well as local Christians of all denominations gather in Jerusalem to partake and witness this annual event. The Holy Fire is taken to certain Orthodox countries, such as Greece, by special flights, being received by church and state leaders.

65,000 gather to defend Orthodox faith
65,000 gather in Moscow 'to pray for Church & defend faith'
]Full prayer service at web address below]:
Tens of thousands of Orthodox Christians have joined a service outside Moscow's main church, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, in defense of their faith, sacred objects and the Church itself, following recent numerous attacks on Christian relics.
The Sunday service has gathered around 65 thousand worshippers, according to official police data. It comes in response to what the church says is a series disrespectful acts against Orthodoxy and religious faith over the past few months.
Sacred Orthodox objects attacked this spring were specially brought to the Cathedral for one day.
Among the relics is a 3.5-metre-tall crucifix cut by an attacker in the cathedral of the city of Nevinnomyssk in Russia's south. There are also five of the 30 icons cut with an ax in the town of Veliky Ustyug in March. And the Virgin Mary icon, shot with bullets in the early 1920s, was also brought from the same city.
Worshippers also denounce other cases of vandalism -- in March, the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh in the city of Mozyr was desecrated with blasphemous inscriptions and sacrilege against the representationof the cross. In April, offenders poured gasoline and set fire to the entrance door to the Cathedral of Demetrius of Thessalonica in Krasnodar. In the Rostov Region, on the eve of Easter, vandals smeared black paint on the walls of a chapel built in memory of those who died in the wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya, as well as the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster.
In February, the activists of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot broke into Moscow's main cathedral and sang blasphemous songs at the altar.
Earlier on Sunday, Patriarch Kirill led a liturgy service and then the worshippers went around the Cathedral in a religious procession. Similar services are being held in other Russian regional centers.
On Saturday, Moscow drivers and bikers had their say in support of the Church. They held a rally denouncing the recent attacks on cathedrals, as well as media criticism of the Patriarch.

The Sacrificial Dance from the Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky
The Trinity-Sergius Lavra is the most important Russian monastery & the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is situated in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 km to the north-east from Moscow....
Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, the Soviet government closed the lavra in 1920. Its buildings were assigned to different civic institutions or declared museums....
In 1930, the famous monastic bells, including the Tsar-bell of 65 tons were destroyed.
In July 2012, the bells were restored and replaced replaced.
