Aerial view of the ancient city of Kostroma
Kostroma is first mentioned in the chronicles in 1213, but is believed by some historians to have been founded by Moscow Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1152, making it just five years younger than Moscow.
Today, Kostroma is a river port, a light-industry center and a serene spot on the Volga River with a population of about 275,000 people. The town is actively developing. In recent years, Kostroma has worked to promote tourism by restoring monuments and public spaces as well as designing new excursion programs and investing in city festivals and cultural events.
Over the past few years more and more visitors have been coming to Kostroma. Although Kostroma is the farthest Golden Ring city from Moscow, some enthusiasts make day trips here from the capital. It’s worth the long journey—this stunningly beautiful city is primarily known for its architecture and folk heritage.

Cathedral of St Nicholas. Pavlovsk
This charming Baroque Orthodox Church was built between 1900 and 1904 in honour of the long deceased Paul I. This multi-domed cathedral is topped with an equal number of Orthodox crosses and Imperial eagles. Like many places of worship the cathedral was neglected under Soviet rule and used for purposes wildly divergent from the original, including stints as a military repair shop and storage facility. Reconsecrated in 1991, regular services are now held and the interior contains choir space and a restored iconostasis with donated icons.
#Russia #Yaroslavl Church of St Elijah the Prophet
The most beautiful church of the city, the Church of Elijah the Prophet is the pride and joy of Yaroslavl and the favorite tourist attraction. It was built in 1647 – 1650 and is one of the most complete and best-preserved monuments of Yaroslavl. Built on the site of two churches, the Intercession and Elijah, the church is considered a real masterpiece of ancient Russian art. The main structure of the temple is a massive building on high foundation topped with five heads resting on light drums. The drums are decorated with arches and columns and surrounded by the rows of kokoshniks. But the main thing is, of course, the interior painting, made by famous Kostroma masters. They have no equals in beauty, richness and brightness of colors.
From both sides the Church of Elijah the Prophet is surrounded by a wide two-tier covered gallery. The gallery from the north and the west is accessed by richly decorated porches. The northwest of the temple is decorated with a tall tent bell tower. Its ornate level is surrounded by arched windows. It is the chapel of the Deposition of the Robe that gives such an unusual openwork appearance to the Church of Elijah the Prophet. Its tall slender octagonal tent is surrounded by a number of kikoshniks, that make the whole structure look elegant and colorful.
Saviour Monastery of St Euthymius
he Saviour Monastery of St. Euthymius is a monastery in Suzdal, Russia.
The monastery was founded in the 14th century, and grew in importance in the 16th and 17th centuries after donations by Vasili III, Ivan IV and the Pozharsky family, a noble dynasty of the region. Among the buildings erected during this period were the Assumption Church, the bell tower, the surrounding walls and towers, and the seven-domed Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour. The cathedral was built in the style of the Grand Duchy of Vladimir-Suzdal. Its interior contains restored frescoes by the school of Gury Nikitin of Kostroma, dating from 1689. The tomb of Dmitry Pozharsky lies by the cathedral wall.
The monastery also contains a prison, built in 1764, which originally housed religious dissidents. The prison continued in use during the Soviet period, and among its better known prisoners was field marshal Friedrich Paulus, who was incarcerated here for a time after his surrender at Stalingrad[citation needed]. The prison now houses a museum about the monastery's military history. more info visit

Church on Blood (Church of All Saints). Ekaterinburg, Russia
Across the street from the Rastorguyev-Kharitonov mansion is the Church on Blood, one of Russia's largest churches. It stands on the spot where the members of the Russian Imperial family and several of their attendants were shot by the Bolsheviks in July 1918. The building where the execution took place, Ipatyev House, was demolished in 1977. During the Perestroika years, pilgrims started to arrive here. A wooden cross was installed in 1990, and later a wooden chapel appeared.
The church itself was opened at the beginning of the 2000s. The design made use of the floor plan of the demolished Ipatyev House. The raised level of the building resembles a church oil lamp. Today, the Church on Blood houses an exhibit dedicated to the events of 1918 and organises art exhibitions.

Church bells in Tomsk, Russia
Suzdal, Golden Ring of Russia, 4K
The ancient town of Suzdal, the main town of the ancient Russian principality in the 12th-13th centuries, is located in the centre of the European part of Russia, some 200 km east of Moscow, 30 km from Vladimir. The White Monuments of Suzdal are outstanding examples of ancient Russian architecture. These white-stone structures is a unique phenomenon, incorporating the best work of creative master-minds and presenting an amazing synthesis of architecture and monumental art. The architecture Suzdal is an outstanding example of the development and perfection of architectural shapes and building techniques which formed a unique school of architecture. This influential style began and achieved its greatest expression here and illustrates the most important stage of human history and culture in the North-East Rus. Widely used as an example for subsequent construction throughout Russian history, they set a standard as a benchmark of architectural beauty and expressiveness of Russian ecclesiastical architecture. In Suzdal, the Kremlin (fortress) is surrounded by earthen ramparts. Within, dominating the whole town, stands the Cathedral of the Nativity, built in the 13th century and reconstructed in the 16th century, with its five-domed roof and 13th-century Golden Doors. Important monuments in the posad (civil settlement) include several cubic churches of the 16th and 17th centuries, such as the Convent of the Deposition of the Holy Robe and the Refectory Church of the Assumption, and several monasteries. The most important of the latter is the Monastery of Our Saviour and St Euthymius, founded in 1352. Some of the monuments are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
