Murmansk
Murmansk (Russian: Му́рманск; Kildin Sami: Мурман ланнҍ; Northern Sami: Murmánska; Skolt Sami: Muurman) is a port city and the administrative center of Murmansk Oblast, Russia, located in the extreme northwest part of Russia, on the Kola Bay, an inlet of the Barents Sea on the northern shore of the Kola Peninsula, close to the Russia's borders with Norway and Finland.
Despite its extreme northern location above the Arctic Circle, Murmansk tends to be nearly the same as any other Russian city of its size, featuring highway and railway access to the rest of Europe, a railway station, and a trolleybus system, in fact, the northernmost on Earth.

Murmansk was the last town founded in the Russian Empire. Murman is a traditional Pomor name for the Barents Sea and derives from the Old Russian word for Norwegians, Murmane, cognate to the English Normans.[7]
The city, first known as Romanov-on-the-Murman (Рома́нов-на-Му́рмане), was founded on October 4, 1916 and named after the royal Russian dynasty of Romanovs. The city, the only ice-free port in the Russian Arctic, was built as a terminus for the railway line to Kola designed to open the North Atlantic supply route to Russia in support of the Eastern Front during the First World War. The city was renamed Murmansk after the February Revolution in 1917.
From 1918 to 1920, the city was occupied by the Western powers who had been allied in the First World War and White forces during the Civil War in Russia.[8]
During World War II, Murmansk was a link with the Western world for Russia, with large quantites of goods important to the respective military efforts traded with the Allies: primarily manufactured goods and raw materials into the Soviet Union. The supplies were brought to the city in the Arctic Convoys.
German forces in Finnish territory launched an offensive against the city in 1941 as part of Operation Silver Fox, and Murmansk suffered extensive destruction, second only to Leningrad and Stalingrad of all Soviet cities.[9][10] However, fierce Soviet resistance and harsh geography prevented the Germans from capturing the city and cutting off the vital Karelian railway line and the ice-free harbour. For the rest of the war, it served as transit point for weapons and other supplies entering the Soviet Union from other Allied nations. This unyielding resistance was commemorated at the 40-year anniversary of the victory over the Germans in the formal designation of Murmansk as a Hero City on May 6, 1985.[11] During the Cold War Murmansk was a centre of Soviet submarine and icebreaker activity and, past the breakup of the Soviet Union, the nearby city and naval base of Severomorsk remains the headquarters of the Russian Northern Fleet.
In 1974, a massive 35.5-metre-tall statue Alyosha, depicting a Russian World War II soldier, on a 7-metre-high foundation, was erected overlooking the city harbour.[12]
To commemorate the 85th anniversary of the city's foundation, the snow-white church of the Saviour-on-the-Waters was modeled after the White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal and built on the shore for the sailors of Murmansk (photograph).
Murmansk's evening newspaper is Vecherny Murmansk, published since 1991.
The city is home to the world's northernmost Jewish synagogue at 68°58' N latitude

The Historic White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal, RUSSIA
These two cities are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Vladimir was founded in 1108 and includes the Cathedral of the Assumption (1158) and the Golden Gate (1164). Suzdal, 25 km north of Vladimir was settled in the 9th and 10th centuries and became a fortress (Kremlin) in the 11th cenutry.
The Island of Valaam. / Остров Валаам.
Valaam is the island in Republic of Karelia of Russia, located in the Northern part of the largest freshwater lakes in Europe - Ladoga, it is the largest island in the Valaam archipelago. On the island there is the village of Valaam, and the monument of Russian architecture - the Valaam monastery, founded before the baptism of Russia, in the year 960, the monk Sergius and Herman, the Greek Holy monks. Transfiguration monastery became the spiritual center of Ladoga lands. It is believed that in ancient times on the island, was located the main temple of Veles (or Volos) and Perun, who were the main deities for the Gentiles living close. The monastic tradition says that the Holy Apostle Andrew, enlightener of the Scythians and the Slavic peoples, moving along the route from the Varangians to the Greeks, blessed of cross the mountain on the island. In the 15th century the monastery was called the Great Lavra or the Northern Athos. Here was the center of world Orthodoxy and writing of books. By the early 16th century in the monastery lived 600 monks. Now in the monastery about two hundred inhabitants. Life revived in All saints, the Baptist, St. Nicholas, Svyatoostrovsky, Sergievsky sketes.
Period 1839-1917 is the heyday of the monastery. In 1989 on December 13, the day of memory of St. Andrew, when the island came six monks, the monastery began the process of revival. And 16 years later, in 2005, was first heard 1000-pound bell Andrew, mounted on the bell tower in the monastery in the framework of the restoration of an ancient belfry. The feast of the Nativity of the blessed virgin Mary September 21, 2008 Patriarch Alexy II consecrated the St. Vladimir skete on Valaam island and conducted the first divine Liturgy in the temple. Resurrection skete, located above Big Nikon Bay, on the mountain, was built in the early twentieth century in the place where according to tradition St. The Apostle Andrew erected a stone cross. Valaam island attracts every year thousands of tourists. The reason - the Valaam Islands have a unique nature, pine forests on the cliffs, warm and quiet inland lakes, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Valaam monastery. During its formation, the monks brought the land, seeds and seedlings of plants from different parts of our country. For such a Northern location is not usual to see some trees and grass. The age of some of them is over three hundred years. The work of the Valaam monks are so fundamental that some areas are truly hand-made. Balaam - the natural reserve, a unique monument of Park art. There are more than 480 species of plants. The island was visited repeatedly by emperors Alexander I, Alexander II, and other members of the imperial family and also Tchaikovsky and Mendeleyev.
The present life of the monastery, another indication that faith invariably raises and restores the monastery from the ruins. So it was throughout the history of Valaam barbarous raids of the Swedes in ancient times, the bombing and the uncertain fate of the monastery during World War 2, it complete, it would seem that the devastation in the era of atheism – monastic life always has returned to these shores.

ทำความรู้สึกบางอย่างหล่นหายที่ St.Petersburg
