Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica (UNESCO/NHK)
The Churches of Peace in Jawor and Ś widnica, the largest timber-framed religious buildings in Europe, were built in the former Silesia in the mid-17th century, amid the religious strife that followed the Peace of Westphalia. Constrained by the physical and political conditions, the Churches of Peace bear testimony to the quest for religious freedom and are a rare expression of Lutheran ideology in an idiom generally associated with the ...

Churches of Peace in Jawor and Swidnica - UNESCO World Heritage Site
These two UNESCO World Heritage site Churches of Peace are fascinating buildings. The largest timber-framed religious buildings in Europe, they are Protestant churches in predominantly Catholic areas, and were built under very strict conditions. The buildings must be entirely wooden, no stones or bricks, no towers, more than a gunshot from the city walls, completed within a year and to a different design than existing churches. Very impressive that all of these conditions were satisfied, and that the churches have now stood for 350 years!

( 波蘭和平教堂 ) Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica/Poland

Petäjävesi Old Church (UNESCO/NHK)
Petäjävesi Old Church, in central Finland, was built of logs between 1763 and 1765. This Lutheran country church is a typical example of an architectural tradition that is unique to eastern Scandinavia. It combines the Renaissance conception of a centrally planned church with older forms deriving from Gothic groin vaults.

The Church Of Peace In Świdnica
The Church of Peace in Świdnica (Lower Silesia, Poland) – a place where history has been made since 1657. Take a walk between the old graves and tombs that surround the church with Beethoven at the background. At 10:30 you can listen to the bells on the wooden tower nearby the church. Honestly, you can find here peace and golden silence.
Defence Line of Amsterdam (UNESCO/NHK)
Extending 135 km around the city of Amsterdam, this defence line (built between 1883 and 1920) is the only example of a fortification based on the principle of controlling the waters. Since the 16th century, the people of the Netherlands have used their expert knowledge of hydraulic engineering for defence purposes. The centre of the country was protected by a network of 45 armed forts, acting in concert with temporary flooding from polders ...

ROAD TRIP POLAND: WROCLAW TO JAWOR & ŚWIDNICA, UNESCO CHURCHES |TRAVELLER'S NEST NZ|
ROAD TRIP POLAND: Wroclaw, Jawor and Swidnica
We crossed into Poland from Prague on 11.08.2019.
We came to South West Poland with the intention of seeing two UNESCO world heritage listed churches, and to see Wroclaw, an UNESCO world heritage listed town.
They did not disappointed.
We took a taxi earlier in the morning to the closest Enterprise Cars office at Wroclaw airport.
We were so surprised to see a brand new airport.
It turns out Poland has invested PLN 5 billion in infastructure. It is largely driven by EU funds. The road infastructure development continues, but the progress in modernizing the railway network has been slower.
The economy has expanded by 37% in the decade leading up to 2018. 2018 was the 27th consecutive year of GDP expansion.
In 2017, GDP per capita reached 70% of the EU average, up from 50% in 2008.
It turns out Poland is a success story since the falling of the Iron Curtain in 1989.
However, we did notice differences between regions, between South and North. Larger cities are doing well, but smaller cities and rural areas are struggling with the outflow of young skilled people. Over 2.3m or 6% have left the country, mainly to UK, Germany and Ireland.
Despite these changes and improvements it is still a Second world country.
Poland was invaded on 01.09.1939. It was the first country invaded. I talk about this further in some of other vlogs.
This trip has been such an eye opener for us and a lesson in history.
Wroclaw is one of the oldest cities in Poland.
Prior to 1945, this region was part of Germany. After the Potsdam Agreement in August 1945, it was returned to Poland.
I am surprised these churches survived WWII and communism.
In 1655 the Lutherans were allowed to build three churches from wood, clay and straw without church bells. All to be built within one year.
Two churches survived today in Jawor and in Swidnica.
The third church of Glagow burned down in 1758.
These three churches became the biggest timber framed religious buildings in Europe.
The church in Jawor, dedicated to the Holy Ghost.
The church in Swidnica is dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
Both were restored by a Polish-German cooperation and recognized by UNESCO in 2001.
A part of Poland not to be missed.

The Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica in Silesia were named after the Peace of Westphalia of 1648.It permitted the Lutherans in the Roman Catholic parts of Silesia to build three churches from wood, loam and straw outside the city walls, without steeples and church bells. The construction time was limited to one year.Since 2001, the two remaining churches are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Petäjävesi Old Church - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Petäjävesi Old Church is a UNESCO World Heritage site and beautiful wooden church in rural Finland. It was built in the 13th century and has survived remarkably intact since then. It's a fantastic example of vernacular architecture, where local craftsmen used local materials to build functional structures, rather than matching current artistic tastes. There's some really beautiful stuff here at Petäjävesi Old Church let's have a closer look.

Urnes Stave Church - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Urnes Stave Church is a fantastic UNESCO World Heritage Site. There were once nearly a thousand stave churches across Norway, though only a handful of them still remain. Urnes is considered the best example of this style, and it's still in fantastic condition. And it's an epic location too, perched on a hill overlooking the fjords - what a spot!
