Dating to 1960 and produced by the Standard Oil Company, Tangent Films, Robert W. Schofield and Leona Carney, this profile of the new city of Brasilia shows the construction of Brazil's City of Hope. The film celebrates architect Oscar Niemeyer and planner Lúcio Costa. At 2:00 the Congressional Center skyscrapers are shown along with House and Senate chambers. At 2:21 the Supreme Court building and at 2:43 the Museum of Brazil is shown. At 2:58 are the 11 ministries for the administration of the government. At 3:30 the Presidential home Alvarado Palace. At 4:42 superblocks (self contained urban blocks for housing and commerce) are shown. Other sights include a church (5:48), the Inauguration Day festivities (6:30 and following) including President Kubitschek arriving in the new city, sites of new embassies (8:50), and the airport (9:17). At 9:25 petroleum, which is of course the business of Standard Oil, is mentioned as crucial to the city's success. At 9:51 highway networks are shown being built with the city declared a motorist's dream. At 10:30 a temporary Brasilia is shown which includes new businesses to support a growing economy. At 11:00 construction by hand and with machines is shown. At 12:26 a huge form is shown for construction of one of Neimeyer's modern buildings.
In 1955 Juscelino Kubitschek was elected president of Brazil. In 1956 he initiated the planning and construction of the new capital. In 1957 an international jury selected Lúcio Costa's plan to guide the construction of Brazil’s new capital, Brasília. Costa's plan was not as detailed as some of the plans presented by other architects and city planners. It did not include land use schedules, models, population charts or mechanical drawings, however, it was chosen by five out of six jurors because it had the features required to align the growth of a capital city. Costa used a cross-axial design indicating the possession and conquest of this new place with a cross often described by some as a dragonfly, an airplane or a bird. Costa's plan included two principal components, the Monumental Axis (east to west) and the Residential Axis (north to south).
The Monumental Axis was assigned political and administrative activities and is considered the body of the city with the style and simplicity of its buildings, oversized scales, and broad vistas and heights, producing the idea of Monumentality. This axis includes the various ministries, national congress, presidential palace, supreme court building and the television and radio tower.
Building Brasília was part of Juscelino's fifty years of prosperity in five plan. Already in 1892, the astronomer Louis Cruls, in the service of the Brazilian government, had investigated the site for the future capital. Lúcio Costa won a contest and was the main urban planner in 1957, with 5550 people competing. Oscar Niemeyer was the chief architect of most public buildings, Joaquim Cardozo was the structural engineer, and Roberto Burle Marx was the landscape designer. Brasília was built in 41 months, from 1956 to April 21, 1960, when it was officially inaugurated.
Brasília is the federal capital of Brazil and seat of government of the Federal District. The city is located atop the Brazilian highlands in the country's center-western region. It was founded on April 21, 1960, to serve as the new national capital. Brasília was planned and developed by Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer and Joaquim Cardozo in 1956 to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. The landscape architect was Roberto Burle Marx. The city's design divides it into numbered blocks as well as sectors for specified activities, such as the Hotel Sector, the Banking Sector and the Embassy Sector. Brasília was chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its modernist architecture and uniquely artistic urban planning. It has also been named City of Design by UNESCO in October 2017 and has been part of the Creative Cities Network since then.
All three branches of Brazil's federal government are centered in the city: executive, legislative, and judiciary. Brasília also hosts 124 foreign embassies.

This 1942 Warner Bros. propaganda film, directed by B. Reeves Eason, gives viewers a look at a reenactment of the training of U.S. Army Air Forces cadets. The film opens with Lt. General Henry H. Arnold climbing out of a plane at an airfield. He looks over a group of graduating cadets at the start of the wings-awarding ceremony. Arnold speaks to the graduates about their roles in the current climate (01:52). The graduates stand at attention, surrounded by what appear to be Vultee BT-13 Valiant planes (03:51). Arnold pins wings on the aviation cadets. The film then cuts to shots of the cadets prior to attending the academy (telling their stories): a young boy plays with a model airplane in a garage (04:24); a young man crunches budget numbers at the kitchen table, then is shown sitting on the front porch with his young wife; 06:40 a college student greets his family on a campus (06:40); another young man picks violets for his sweetheart (07:50), then he is shown kissing her goodbye at a train station. The new cadets get off a bus at the academy and walk onto the airfield (08:55). A Commanding Officer speaks to the new cadets. Cadets sit in a classroom and learn about aerodynamics. Several cadets are shown the instruments in a mock cockpit. Cadets fly bi-planes (likely Stearman Model 75s, also known as the PT-13 Kaydet) with their flight instructors. A training plane lands and totters on its landing gear. The film features several shots of young pilots in the cockpits of planes and writing in their flight record books. The cadets move onto bigger planes as they march to a squadron of BT-13 Valiants (12:20). Dozens of the planes’ engines fire up, and the planes are shown flying through the air. Footage shows the planes doing aerobatics and flying in formation. A cadet fires a machine gun from the cockpit of grounded plane during target practice (13:30). General Arnold salutes the new graduates. Footage shows a Lockheed P-38 Lightning taking on the ground (14:25), followed by Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses flying in the sky. There is a panning shot of an air base on the West Coast (14:48). Air raid sirens sound and men run to their battle stations, some readying anti-aircraft guns. B-17s land on an airstrip (16:06). Several air crewmen climb out of one of the bombers and walk into an office to speak with a colonel. The B-17 crews board the bombers and taxi out onto runway to take off. The ships are shown flying through the sky. There are several brief shots of the homes of the pilots, including the front of a Quinn Hotel (18:24), several people exiting a church, kids playing in a front yard, a farmer tilling the soil, and well-dressed people on a city street looking up at the sky as the bombers pass overhead. P-38 Lightnings fly in formation, and the film concludes with a shot of other planes flying in formation off into the sunset.

U.S. ARMY NERVE GAS EXPOSURE -- EMERGENCY USE OF ATROPINE SYRINGE / SYRETTE / AMPULE 98374
Want to support this channel and help us preserve old films? Visit
Browse our products on Amazon:
This U.S. Army training film from the year 1958 Nerve Gases Part II: Use of Injection Instruments presents information about the emergency treatment administered after nerve gas exposure. It specifically examines the use of injection instruments to administer the medicine atropine. At 1:37 an instructor shows the atropine syringe which is provided with every Army gas mask kit. At 2:33 a syrette of the drug is shown and its use described. The syrette is a device for injecting liquid through a needle. It is similar to a syringe except that it has a closed flexible tube instead of a rigid tube and piston.
At 7:28 an ampule of atropine is shown. An ampoule (also ampul, ampule, or ampulla) is a small sealed vial which is used to contain and preserve a sample, usually a solid or liquid. Ampoules are commonly made of glass, although plastic ampoules do exist. At 11:46 medics are seen administering shots at an Army medical station. At 12:36 self-administration of the drug is demonstrated. At 13:20 an African-American soldier receives needle injection in the classroom.
Atropine is a medication used to treat certain types of nerve agent and pesticide poisonings as well as some types of slow heart rate and to decrease saliva production during surgery. It is typically given intravenously or by injection into a muscle. Eye drops are also available which are used to treat uveitis and early amblyopia. The intravenous solution usually begins working within a minute and lasts half an hour to an hour. Large doses may be required to treat some poisonings.
Common side effects include a dry mouth, large pupils, urinary retention, constipation, and a fast heart rate. It should generally not be used in people with angle closure glaucoma. While there is no evidence that its use during pregnancy causes birth defects, it has not been well studied. It is likely safe during breastfeeding. It is an antimuscarinic (a type of anticholinergic) that works by inhibiting the parasympathetic nervous system.
Atropine occurs naturally in a number of plants of the nightshade family including deadly nightshade, Jimson weed, and mandrake.[6] It was first isolated in 1833. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system. It is available as a generic medication and is not very expensive. A one-milligram vial costs between US$0.06 and US$0.44, wholesale, in the developing world.
