Science Literacy Week 2018: Churchill Research Range
Established in 1976, the Churchill Northern Studies Centre (CNSC) is an independent, non-profit research and education facility located 23 km east of the town of Churchill, Manitoba. The CNSC is one of the most accessible northern field research stations, open year-round, in Canada. As a community-based organization serving Canadian universities, government agencies and international organizations, the CNSC provides an ideal setting for field-based research and education programs for world-class scientists and educators. During 2018 Science Literacy week we will be highlighting some of the outstanding science happening here in Canada’s Subarctic near Churchill by posting a new video each day!
The Churchill Northern Studies Centre (CNSC) is located adjacent to the former Churchill Research Range (CRR) where approximately 3,500 suborbital flights by rockets were launched from the site between 1956 and 1985. On day one of Science Literacy week we would like to focus attention on the incredible discoveries that were made during the operation of the rocket launching facilities at the CRR. This video highlights Canada’s historical role in space rocketry and upper atmosphere research from the facilities in Churchill, Manitoba.

Expedition Churchill Campaign
The University of Manitoba asked McKim to develop innovative approaches for engaging the community on its Arctic climate change research. The medium? The VIA Rail passenger train that runs from Winnipeg to Churchill.
The Expedition Churchill: A Gateway to Arctic Research campaign was launched in late 2018, when the 1,700-km train route was re-opened. The work includes a wrap for the entire exterior of the dining car, wraps for the car’s interior spaces, interactive kiosks located throughout Manitoba, and a downloadable interactive digital app that showcases the research in photo, video and infographics.
McKim is a proud partner of the campaign. Other Expedition Churchill partners include VIA Rail, the Town of Churchill, the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, Assiniboine Park Zoo and Travel Manitoba. The campaign was launched in late 2018.

Churchill Northern Studies Centre dinner time and clean up
CNSC has a great facility and it's cafeteria is outstanding. Learning Vacation and Road Scholar groups, David Marx photography at davidmarx.com, Jim Halfpenny at tracknature.com, Earthwatch, and others all sign up to help with the dishes and almost everyone enjoys the experience! This video is from the March 12-17 Road Scholar aurora group and David Marx/Jim Halfpenny's group having a great dinner and the cleanup aftermath.
The Auroras of Churchill
My 5-minute music video features time-lapse movies of the Northern Lights shot in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, over 5 nights from January 25 to 29, 2017, at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. I was the instructor that week for a group of participants in the “Arctic Skies” Road Scholar program.
The auroras that week were typical of nightly Churchill displays, with the northern town under the auroral oval at 58° North latitude and 97° West longitude. During the displays the Kp Index was reading no higher than 3; most were at Kp 1 or 2. Nevertheless, the aurora puts on a good show on any clear night in winter. But displays with Kp indices higher than 3 or 4 are even more impressive. See my other aurora music videos here for examples from Churchill in 2016.
I shot the time-lapses with a Nikon D750 camera and Rokinon 12mm full-frame fish-eye and a Sigma 20mm lens, and a Canon 6D with a Sigma 8mm circular fish-eye lens. I shot about 3200 frames for the sequences here. Exposures varied from 1 second to 10 seconds per frame. Intervals were always 1 second.
Frames were processed with Adobe Camera Raw and LRTimelapse, and assembled with Time-Lapse from Microprojects using a 2- or 3-frame Tweening effect to smooth the motion.

Tonya Coulthard sent us this great video capturing the aurora borealis during her recent visit to the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. Thanks again Tonya for sharing your northern lights time lapse!
Grizzly Visit at the CNSC June 25th
A Grizzly Bear was spotted at the Churchill Northern Study Centre on June 25th at about 10:30 PM. One of our learners captured this video from the upstairs observation deck!
Although Churchill is known for it's Polar Bears, Grizzlies are being seen more in the region. For more information, here is a recent CBC article on the topic:
