This video shows our trip to the beautiful Chureito Pagoda (in Japanese: 忠霊塔 ), which had stunning, gorgeous views over Mount Fuji on a clear May day. We visited this are of Japan on May 11th, just after sakura season and golden week, and during our springtime visit we visited & toured the surrounding area of Fujiyoshida, Kawaguchiko & Yamanashi.
There are a lot of steps - the climb up is pretty tiring! - but every so often we took a break from the stairs to look at the view behind us of Mt Fuji and that helped! Once we got up there, it was worth all the huffing and puffing up - the views were magnificant - super pretty! Especially in Spring when Mount Fuji is still capped with a lot of snow to make it look particularly majestic.
If you're planning a Japanese holiday tour to this glorious area of Japan near Fuji Mountain and Lake Kawaguchiko, I recommend stopping by this pagoda - it's a bit of a walk and a bit of a ramble / hike, but I guess it's a good way to get your fitness on and stay fit! And it's great for photographers and tourists alike!

Chureito Pagoda & Kawaguchiko: Mt Fuji Viewing with Cherry Blossoms!
2 weeks ago on 20 April I visited the Chureito Pagoda to get that stereotypical picture of Japan featuring the pagoda, cherry blossoms and Mt Fuji, followed by a bike ride around Lake Kawaguchiko and my first limited express (特急) E257 series train back to Tokyo!

Located on the mountain top of Fujiyoshida City in the Yamanashi prefecture, the Chureito Pagoda is part of the Arakusa Sengen Shrine and was built as a peace memorial in 1963.
This gorgeous five-storey pagoda can be reached after climbing around 400 steps and, once there, will give you one of the most breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. It would be hard to find a better view anywhere in the region, especially when it reaches its ‘beauty peak’ during the sakura (cherry blossom) season.
As for the Arakura Sengen Shrine, it is said that this holy place was erected in 705, and while relatively small its unique location and torii (gate) facing Mount Fuji is also something worth checking out when visiting Chureito Pagoda.

The five storied pagoda is actually called The Fujiyoshida Cenotaph Monument but everyone simply refers to it as the Chureito Pagoda. Overlooking Fujiyoshida City, the pagoda itself is part of a much larger shrine known as the Arakura Sengen Shrine.
In years gone by the Chureito Pagoda was largely unknown outside of Japan however in recent times the stunning view has become synonymous with Japan and an extremely popular photography spot. Today it’s one of the most iconic places to photograph Mount Fuji from, and for good reason. The view is absolutely stunning!

Unfortunately the weather doesn't allow for the beautiful background we were hoping for but we make the best of the situation. We take a 2 hour hike up the mountain, with a shocking twist. After working up an appetite we go to a traditional Japanese restaurant and eventually catch a train back to Tokyo. Have you wondered what postcard Japan looks like ? Just watch to find out!

Arakura Fuji Sengen Jinja, Chureito Pagoda, Japan - Canon 80D - Virtual Trip
The name of Arakura Fuji Sengen does not necessarily mean much to travelers, and yet the images of this temple with Mount Fuji in the background decorate all the guides on Japan. The epic image of the pagoda facing Mount Fuji very often serves to illustrate the exotic Japanese style. The Arashiyama bamboo plantation and the Fushimi Inari and its red toriis in Kyoto are known, the huge torii in the water at Miyajima near Hiroshima, but the Arakura Fuji Sengen Temple is less well known. It is actually found on google more often under the name of Chureito Pagoda, which means in fact the only pagoda that we see in all the photos.
Located in the region of Mount Fuji Five Lakes in Yamanashi Prefecture, his visit forces him to make a junction on the Tokyo - Kyoto axis.
Accessible from Shimoyoshida Station on Fujikyu Sen, it is best to go by bus from Kawaguchiko. If you have your luggage with you, there are plenty of lockers at Kawaguchiko Station. It's easier than going down to Shimoyoshida, visiting the temple, returning to the station, heading back to Kawaguchiko to see the lake etc. In addition, all the tourist buses but also the local buses leave Kawaguchiko and some pass among others by this temple. For a question of organization, it is therefore simpler.

The Chureito Pagoda (忠霊塔, Chūreitō) is a five storied pagoda on the mountainside overlooking Fujiyoshida City and Mount Fuji off in the distance. The pagoda is part of the Arakura Sengen Shrine and was built as a peace memorial in 1963 nearly 400 steps up the mountain from the shrine's main buildings.
The location offers spectacular views of Mount Fuji in combination with the pagoda, especially during the cherry blossom season in mid April when there are hundreds of trees in bloom and during the autumn color season which usually takes place in the first half of November. The spot is particularly popular among photographers as it allows for some wonderfully stereotypical shots of Japan.

As we all know, people don't come for the pagoda, but for the incredible view. Since it's winter, it's usually likely that you'll see the mountain uncovered by clouds, like we did today. Getting to the pagoda is just a 5-minute walk up some steps and there you are. Get your camera ready and sit a little while to observe Fuji's splendor before you make your way down.
