Cheboksary
Cheboksary is a city on the right side of the Volga River. Shupashkar, a Pearl of the Volga Region, a capital of Chuvashia, a homeland of a celebrated Russian soldier Vasily Chapayev and of a cosmonaut Andriyan Nikolayev - our city has many definitions. Two cultures, two names, two languages. Cheboksary today is a city, where history and present are merged together. Russian and Chuvash culture interweave in a peculiar pattern. Unique monuments and museums, national festivals and holidays - you will definitely find something interesting to see and to experience here.
Зачем американке чувашский язык?
Why would an American need Chuvash language?
Kate, or as she is called in Cheboksary, Katia Lindsey is mastering our difficult national language. She came to us through a special education program. She is a linguist. As it turns out, she already speaks in Russian well, she began studying Russian 4 years ago. Our cheerful crew found out how easily is Katia picking up Chuvash, and what does she think of Russian cuisine, culture, and people.
For Katia this is only her sixth Chuvash lesson, but she already speaks better than many people in the country. She is very talented and catches on quick, says her teacher.
The study of Chuvash language is a part of her future dissertation. Experts consider our language to be among the disappearing languages, which is why Kate came to study. But what brought Kate to Cheboksary is more like fate. Katia's sweetheart - he lives in Washington, DC - is a native of Chuvashia. Why is Chuvash language popular in the villages, but dying in the city? - This is one of the questions asked by Kate Lindsey.
It's not very difficult. I live with Andrey's mom, she speaks Chuvash and Grandma also speaks Chuvash. I have the opportunity to speak often. Everyone wants to talk to me! Alexander Blinov, the director of the school of foreign languages: - Chuvash is a foreign language, just as Russian is. On the other hand, some categories in Chuvash come more easily, since they relate to other foreign languages. In terms of sound - like ă The sound can be found in French. Many categories are similar.
Katia promises that she loves Chuvash dishes, and tries to cook at home. Not only does she love Russian food, but also culture. She discovered our literature at age 15, first in English. Her first book - Crime and Punishment. Her favorite book - Anna Karenina.
Kate Lindsey, In the U.S., we often talk with everyone on public transport, on the street. Even with strangers. Here, no one wanted to talk to me! The first few days were quite lonely. But it is only in the beginning that Russians seem to be closed, continues Kate. Friendships are very sincere. As a result, this American woman has many friends in this country already.
Of course, I miss home, the girl says. But the distance is shorter, thanks to new technology.
Katia doesn't have a lot of time for popular entertainment or walks in the city. Twice a week she has classes in Russian and twice in Chuvash. She gives open classes in schools, and leads conversation clubs. Yet she has time to go to museums and theaters.
Kate Lindsey, Chuvash language is beautiful. The more languages you know, the better. You can speak Russian and English and Chuvash, this is not a problem. By the way, the Chuvash language - the fifth for Katia - is apparently, not the last.
