The Chuxi Tulou Cluster is another UNESCO World Heritage Site with five large circular buildings, 10 rectangular buildings and a 600-year old history. Very few tourists come to Chuxi because of the hard journey but when the road is finished...they will come...
Unlike many of the other clusters, there are no modern buildings in Chuxi Tulou Cluster, only the old ones, and what made it even more interesting was the fact that we could go into the upper levels.

2011 Dec - Hakka Tulou Yongding, Fujian
The Hakka clan still lived in the Yongding county in Fujian, where centuries old tulou were built to protect them from bandits and wild animals. Tulou are round/rectangular structures made of rammed earth and glutinous rice, reinforced by bamboo and wood chips.
In search of our roots, we traveled to the hilly interior of Fujian in Dec 2011 to witness the most astonishing Hakka tulou (roundhouses) that still exist in the 21st century China. There were thousands of tulou but we visited the few popular clusters in the area, namely Chuxi and Hongkeng tulou clusters.
A must place to visit if you are Hakka!

You can drive from gorgeous Taxia Village over to the Hongkeng Tulou Cluster without any problems. The Hongkeng cluster contains Zhengchanglou, Jingyanglou, Kaijulou and Fuyulou, all completely different styles of tulous that should be seen even through we were definately becoming toulou'd out...
Jingyanglou is a very friendly and quiet private tulou that didn't have many families still living inside along with even fewer tourists. Originally called the Lins' residence, Jingyanglou was constructed between 1821-1852 and is a square tulou. Four stories high, 12 bays wide and 10 bays deep.

Tulou is a kind of earthen houses, built by Hakka and Minnan peoples in the mountainous and rural areas of south-eastern China, mainly in the province of Fujian. They were mostly built between the 12th and the 20th centuries. Tulou is a powerful, multi-storey homes, usually circular in shape, with a very thick, 'almost 6 feet' of mud walls, reinforced with wood, bamboo and stones, with access to the central courtyard through one door only. The result is a well-lit, well-ventilated, windproof and earthquake-proof building that is warm in winter and cool in summer. Tulous usually have only one main gate, guarded by 4–5-inch-thick or 100–130 mm wooden doors reinforced with an outer shell of iron plate. The top level of these earth buildings has gun holes for defensive purposes. In the middle of the stone courtyard is a small building performing ceremonial functions like weddings, funerals, prayer. The courtyard is surrounded by wooden corridors leading to housing consisting of two or three rooms. The two lowest floors of Tulou are bulky, do not have windows and are most commonly used as warehouses and granaries, while homes are located above the second floor.
Tulou are called small kingdoms or small towns because they fit the whole clan and can house up to 800 people or 80 families each. Tulou first emerged as early as the thirteenth century, But the most complex houses built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Tulou design exercises not only residential and defensive functions, but also provides the harmony and peace of mind thanks to the subordination of the rules of feng shui. In the province of Fujian is currently 46 Tulou gathered in several groups, of which the largest and best known Chuxi, Tianluokeng, Hekeng, Gaobei, Dadi, Hongkeng and Yangxian. In 2008 Fujian Tulou, designated as UNESCO World Heritage site, is a small and specialized subgroup of tulou, known for their unique shape, large scale, and ingenious structure. There are more than 20,000 tulou in southern Fujian, still stand today, ten of which are over 600 years old. The oldest one, “Fu Xing Lou” in Hu Le town, was constructed over 1,200 years ago and is regarded as a “living fossil” of the construction style of central China.

Glamorazzi is the official Australia partner of this pageant, supervised by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of PRC, Embassy of China in Australia, Embassy of Australia in China, hosted by Fujian Provincial Tourism Bureau, undertaken by China-Australia Entrepreneurs Association Incorporated, Australia Scenic Investment Co. Ltd in China and planned by Xiamen BLCA Culture Communication Co. Ltd. Supporting parties in Australia include the Adelaide City Travel Agencies, Lincoln Port Tourism Bureau, Melbourne Tourism Bureau, Sydney Tourism Bureau and Tasmania Tourism Bureau.

The pageant is now open for registration until 31st July 2012 at Glamorazzi.com.au . The auditions will take place in Adelaide on 11th August 2012, Melbourne on 18th August 2012 and Sydney on 19th August 2012. 40 successful contestants will compete in the Semi Finals against 40 semi-finalists from China, to be held in Adelaide on 25th/26th August 2012 (date to be confirmed). Selection criteria is based on overall body figure, self introduction, talent presentation, tourism knowledge and some other aspects of the competition, to be advised. The top 20 from both countries will enter the Grand Final, to be held in Xiamen, China, on the 23rd September 2012. Outdoor scenic photo shoot will take place in Australia before the Grand Final in China. All travel & accommodation expenses will be provided, finalists must have a valid passport and apply for China visa to travel in September 2012.

Winner will receive an Infiniti sports car or RMB400,000 or equivalent in AUD.
First Runner-up will receive RMB280,000 or equivalent in AUD.
Second Runner-up will receive RMB120,000 or equivalent in AUD.
Best Expression winner will receive RMB40,000 or equivalent in AUD.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
Female, at least 16 years of age, minimum 165cm, maximum 60kg, in good health condition, fluent in English and no criminal record. Some tourism knowledge and artistic accomplishment(s) will be favourable. No modelling or pageant experience required. There is no entry fees for this pageant.

Zhengchanglou Tulou in The Hongkeng Cluster, Fujian Province, China
Zhengchanglou tulou was built in 1912 by the descendants of a rich tobacco merchant and has two concentric circles. The outer circle has 184 rooms while the inner circle has 32 rooms. Zhengchanglou is another UNESCO World Heritage Site and nicknamed the prince of tulous.
It was remarkable how the locals went about their daily lives with the gazillion of tourists milling around. ex-Marine (husband, Steve) made a very insightful statement. At home, this amount of people crammed into one living quarter would be called a slum not an UNESCO World Heritage Site!
