Cijin/Qijin Island - Kaohsiung, Taiwan - Best sites to visit
Day 2, visit to Cijin Island in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Visiting the shell house, lighthouse and Cihou Fort on an electric, four-seater bicycle.
Kaohsiung Lighthouse & Cihou Fort / 高雄燈塔 + 旗後砲台
In 1883, British engineers built a Chinese-style rectangular red-brick lighthouse (Kaohsiung Lighthouse / 高雄燈塔) at the top of Mount Ki-au, at the southern side of the harbor.
During the Japanese rule, in line with the expansion of the harbor, the lighthouse was rebuilt in 1916 as part of the project. It underwent renovation in 1918 to what it looks like today. The base of the lighthouse building was rebuilt in Baroque style.
Cihou Fort / 旗後砲台 or Cihou Battery is a historic fort in Qijin District, Kaohsiung, formerly guarding northern entrance to Kaohsiung Harbor. The first fortifications were built in 1720 when Taiwan was ruled by the Manchu-led Qing Empire of China. After Japanese expedition in 1874, the Qing authorities constructed a modern fort, which in 1880 had new Armstrong's guns installed. It played no part in the Sino-French War; the fighting in Taiwan took place around Keelung and during blockade French ships did not approach the port.
Taiwan was ceded to Japan according to the Treaty of Shimonoseki in the aftermath of the first Sino-Japanese war. The local troops, however, fought on. On 12 October 1895, escadre commanded by admiral Arichi Shinanojo (cruisers Yoshino, Naniwa, Akitsushima, Yaeyama, Saien (ex Chinese Jiyuan, captured in Weihaiwei) and corvette Hiei) arrived at Takow (modern-day Kaohsiung) and prompted the foreigners to evacuate, as they would conduct the attack on the next day. The foreigners boarded gunboat HMS Tweed and two tugs and withdrew (only to return once the fight was over). At 7 am, 13 October, Japanese ships opened fire on the Takow forts at a range of about 6,000 yards. For the first half-hour, the forts responded, but after this their guns were silent...The forts fired twenty four rounds, the best shot being from the 8-inch B.L. Armstrong guns in Apes' Hill fort, which struck the water about 500 yards from the Naniwa Kan. The Japanese troops seized the forts in early afternoon, suffering no casualties (4 Chinese soldiers were killed).
During the Japanese era the fort was not used. After World War II the hill was fortified by Chinese army: light gun and machine gun nests cut in the rock can still be found there.
Kaohsiung Lighthouse
the story of Kaohsiung Lighthouse
A view from the Kaohsiung Lighthouse
The Kaohsiung Lighthouse (Chinese: 高雄燈塔; pinyin: Gāoxióng Dēngtǎ), also called Cihou Lighthouse (Chinese: 旗後燈塔; pinyin: Qíhòu Dēngtǎ) or Cijin Lighthouse (Chinese: 旗津燈塔; pinyin: Qíjīn Dēngtǎ), is a lighthouse in Qijin District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
After the signing of Convention of Peking in 1860 during the Qing Dynasty rule, the Takau Harbor was opened to foreign traders in 1863. With increasing commercial shipping activities and a lack of a proper ship navigation system, the British engineers built a Chinese-style rectangular red-brick lighthouse at the top of Mount Ki-au (旗後山), at the southern side of the harbor.
During the Japanese rule, in line with the expansion of the harbor, the lighthouse was rebuilt in 1916 as part of the project. It underwent renovation in 1918 to what it looks like today. The base of the lighthouse building was rebuilt in Baroque style.
In 1985, the lighthouse was rated a Class 3 Building of Historical Interest by the Ministry of the Interior and was subsequently opened to the public.

Tungyin Tao Lighthouse
the story of Tungyin Tao Lighthouse
Taiwan | Kaohsiung | Cijin Island | Street Food | Tunnel
Cijin Island is a small island in Kaohsiung, just 15-minutes ferry ride outside the famous Kaohsiung Harbour. This island has become a favorite destination. This island is famous not only for historical and cultural sites, but also for the fresh seafood.
Things to do in Cijin Island
You can visit Cijin Lighthouse, Cihou Fort, Tian Hou Temple, Sea Shell Musium and Rainbow Church.
Or you can cycling around the island.
Taiwan vlog Day 10: Kaohsiung: Sizihwan, Cijin Island(Windmill Park & Rainbow Church) + Love River!
Last day in Kaohsiung!(:
Went to the Sizihwan district, recommended by a local(the cute grandma I met a day prior!). Since it's nearby Cijin island, I decided to take the ferry there. It only takes about 10 minutes or less and cost I think $20 NTD for students with student ID and around $50 NTD for adults.
The island was actually really cool! With a lot of food vendors, attractions, activities, and etc. It wasn't that hard to get around either. You can rent a bike or ride the traditional bikes or take a bus around the island. I went to the Wind turbine park and the Rainbow church. (Also saw the giant sea shell :D) I didn't get to see the lighthouse due to time but it's a popular attraction as well.
Lastly, the Love River! The grandma told me that the Love River used to be really polluted and now they cleaned it up and made it a beautiful attraction(: It's a nice relaxing place to take a stroll around but that's about it haha.

Kaohsiung's Cijin District Area / 高雄市 / たかおし
The Cijin District (旗津) is a slender island in Kaohsiung harbor which serves as a natural breakwater for the harbour. The district is filled with seafood restaurants selling freshly caught seafood which can be prepared right after you pick it out. Cijin is connected to the rest of Kaohsiung / 高雄市 / たかおし by underwater tunnels, but the transportation of choice is one of the many ferries that traverse the harbour. Fare for the ferry ride from the Gushan Ferry Pier Station / 鼓山輪渡站 is now NT$40 per person. The street that goes straight from the Cijin Ferry Station / 旗津輪渡站 has about two blocks of snack stands, as well as seafood restaurants near the end.
TianHou Temple (currently under restoration) on the street was built about three hundred years ago (regarded as the oldest temple in Kaohsiung), and dedicated to the Goddess of Sailors, Matzu. People believe that Matzu can protect every fisherman who put out to sea.
Cijin Coast Park (Cijin Seaside park), No.990 Qijin Third Road, Qijin District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The Cijin Seaside Park is a long area of picturesque terrain along the west coast of Cijin Island. Take a leisurely stroll past intriguing architectural designs with a constant view of the Taiwan Strait. The park incorporates a long path for walking and cycling as well as an ecological area and Cijin Beach.
ChiHou Lighthouse, #34, Chi-Xia Lane, Chi-Jin District.. The lighthouse was built by English technicians in Ching Dynasty (1883). In 1916, the Japanese remodeled it into Baroque stye and painted it white. This renovation was made as part of the expasion of Dagao port. The lighthouse has played a crucial role in guiding ships since 1918 during night sailing.
Chihou Fort, #34, Chi-Xia Lane, Chi-Jin District.. Chihou Fort is a battery which was designed by English engineer. It was after the Cing (Qing) government took over Taiwan that the fort became a military base. The fort stationed a naval commander and one hundred soldiers. The battery was also armored with four British-made Armstrong breecholders weighing 6.5 tons each. The fort was occupied by the Japanese army in 1895. Subsequently, the cannons in the fort were dismantled and melted. Meanwhile the battery was abandoned. In 1988, Kaohsiung city government started to restore the battery and it was completed in 1992. As a result, a new Cihou battery was reborn to please the tourists.
