Paul Stamets @ Newmark Theatre 9/20/19
A small portion of a lecture given by mycologist and environmental activist, Paul Stamets, from the Newmark theatre on 9/20/19 in Portland, Oregon. The purpose of the talk was to educate the public about psychedelic mushrooms & to raise money and awareness for the Oregon Psilocybin Society, a non-profit organization with plans to sponsor a 2020 ballot initiative to legalize medicinal psilocybin. Legalizing psilocybin for medical purposes opens the door to outright legalization and serves as a model for other major cities in the United States to follow suit. The event was also sponsored by MAPS, the multidisciplinary association for psychedelic studies.
In this portion of the lecture, Paul Stamets discusses Michael Pollan’s new book, “How to Change Your Mind” and shares a recipe for a cold water extraction of psilocybin from fresh mushrooms, among other very current and relevant headlines from the scientific community. Paul Stamets was also promoting the new feature length documentary “Fantastic Fungi” and the anthology style book created to accompany the movie. Fantastic Fungi will be in select theaters this month, September 2019. Portland residents can catch a screening of the movie beginning Saturday, September 21st (today) at Cinema 21 in the Pearl District of the downtown Portland area.
Recorded with my iPhone and edited with the iMovie app. Video created by Kris Hagner of the YouTube channel Sub Rosa.

Albina Murals
From the Portland State University Archives: Through the generous support of the National Film Preservation Foundation, Portland State is able to share this restored version of the Albina Murals, a 1978 documentary film originally shot on color Super 8 and produced by the University's Center for the Moving Image. The murals, created by local artists, depict scenes from African American history, with special attention to the Northwest and Portland. The project represents an important example of the power of the intersection of community, public art and public history. This is the only known film documentation of the mural panels which were removed in 1983.
Under the direction of the project's documentarian, Darryl Clegg, Albina Murals highlights the year-long collaboration among 7 local artists of color working to craft a community monument to African American history and includes scenes from the project's public dedication on February 10, 1978. The artists include Isaac (now Isaka) Shamsud-Din (mural painter/project director), Charles Tatum (sculptor/project assistant director), Henry Frison (mural painter), Chonita Henderson Smith (mural painter), Jenny Harada Allen (mural painter), and Larry Scott (assistant mural painter). The mural panels hung from 1978 till 1983 on the exterior walls of the Albina Human Resource Center in the heart of North Portland's Albina neighborhood. Unprotected and unmaintained, the deteriorating murals were eventually removed by the artists. They survive for public viewing only in photographic form and in this documentary.
Filmmakers: Christopher Bangs, Richard Caplan, Lan Fendors, Gary Eppelsheimer, Donna Schatz

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.

SUMMARY
=======
Portland is the largest city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the seat of Multnomah County. It is a major port in the Willamette Valley region of the Pacific Northwest, at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. As of 2017, Portland had an estimated population of 647,805, making it the 26th-largest city in the United States, and the second-most populous in the Pacific Northwest (after Seattle). Approximately 2.4 million people live in the Portland metropolitan statistical area (MSA), making it the 25th most populous MSA in the United States. Its Combined Statistical Area (CSA) ranks 18th-largest with a population of around 3.2 million. Approximately 60% of Oregon's population resides within the Portland metropolitan area.Named after Portland, Maine, the Oregon settlement began to be populated in the 1830s near the end of the Oregon Trail. Its water access provided convenient transportation of goods, and the timber industry was a major force in the city's early economy. At the turn of the 20th century, the city had a reputation as one of the most dangerous port cities in the world, a hub for organized crime and racketeering. After the city's economy experienced an industrial boom during World War II, its hard-edged reputation began to dissipate. Beginning in the 1960s, Portland became noted for its growing progressive political values, earning it a reputation as a bastion of counterculture. The city operates with a commission-based government guided by a mayor and four commissioners as well as Metro, the only directly elected metropolitan planning organization in the United States. The city government is notable for its land-use planning and investment in public transportation. Portland is frequently recognized as one of the world's most environmentally conscious cities because of its high walkability, large community of bicyclists, farm-to-table dining, expansive network of public transportation options, and over 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares) of public parks. Its climate is marked by warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. This climate is ideal for growing roses, and Portland has been called the City of Roses for over a century.

Good Architecture is Theatre with Bing Sheldon
Bing Sheldon, FAIA, Principle, Chairman & Founder of SERA Architects, takes us on a personal tour of The Quimby House: The residence he designed, built and raised his family in for the past 45 years. A true mid-century and sustainable architect in every sense, Bing graduated from the Harvard school of Architecture in 1961. He then moved to Copenhagen to spend two years working for his mentor. During that period he adopted the minimalistic and community based Scandinavian Culture as his own.
In 1964 he returned to the United States where he would settle in Portland, Oregon. In 1968, SERA was founded as an architectural firm where he could put his life experiences into professional practice; hereby producing thoughtful designs for clientele seeking re-adaptation in existing façades or new structures that conceptually made sense. Over the past 40+ years his influence has been weaved throughout Portland, essentially creating the backdrop that would inspire not only the region, but the industry as a whole. It is in this house, and within this film, where the stories are told, and this is only the beginning....

Nowhere Man Episode 2 -Turnabout -
2 Turnabout Tobe Hooper Lawrence Hertzog September 4, 1995
After fleeing to Oregon using credit cards stolen from Dr. Bellamy, Veil is picked up by operatives of the conspiracy, who believe that he is Dr. Bellamy. He is transported to a Midwest sanitarium that is secretly operated by the conspiracy and asked to treat Ellen Combs (Mimi Craven), a young woman whose identity has also recently been erased by the conspiracy. The supervisor (George DelHoyo) promises Bellamy the Veil case file if he can get Ms. Combs to cooperate and Veil agrees to the task. Veil finds that Ellen's story is strikingly similar to his own as he tries to protect Ellen while also trying to discover the secret of his erasure.
Nowhere Man (TV series)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nowhere Man is an American television series that aired from 1995 to 1996 starring Bruce Greenwood. Created by Lawrence Hertzog, the series aired Monday nights on UPN. Despite critical acclaim, including TV Guide's label of The season's coolest hit,[1] the show was cancelled after one season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nowhere Man is the story of photojournalist Thomas Veil, who discovers that his life has been abruptly erased: his friends claim not to know him, his wife claims not to recognize him and is living with another man. His ATM cards and credit cards no longer work. His best friend turns up dead. His mother, recovering from a stroke, is incapable of confirming his existence. In the course of a single evening, every trace of Tom's identity is gone.
Tom believes this is a conspiracy related to a photograph he took a year earlier, depicting four men being hanged in South America by what appear to be US soldiers. The only evidence Tom has of his past are the negatives of that photograph. A mysterious organization covertly pursues Tom in search of the negatives. The series revolves around Veil's attempts to get his life back by trying to find out more about the organization, while also trying to keep the negative safe.
In the final episode, Gemini, it is revealed that Tom had been captured by the organization prior to the events of the series' first episode, and that all his memories of his life, including his marriage and even his name, had been implanted as part of a brainwashing experiment known as Project Marathon. He learns that he is actually a covert government operative codenamed Gemini, and is part of a secret task force called Heritage House which was formed to investigate the organization and Project Marathon. He also learns that his copy of the Hidden Agenda photograph, as well as his memories of having taken it, have been altered, and that the original negative shows that the four men being lynched are actually U.S. senators being murdered by the organization.
In the final episode, Tom questions the number two man at the FBI at gunpoint, but the man kills himself rather than risk revealing information under torture. The series ends with Tom watching a videotape that had been in the FBI man's possession, a film that finally explains everything. We see Tom sitting in a chair under the influence being brainwashed into believing he's Thomas Veil and the life he's been living. We hear he works for the FBI and this is all a training exercise.

Although the main character travels from city to city across the United States in search of clues about the conspiracy, exteriors on the show were filmed in Portland, Oregon. Resemblances can also be seen to The Manchurian Candidate, North by Northwest, 12 Monkeys, Three Days Of The Condor, The X-Files and the 1967 television series Coronet Blue.

Marijuana Documentary - Northwest Trees (2016)
Marijuana documentary 2016 -
An independent documentary film by Ben Grayzel.
I made this marijuana documentary in 6 weeks during a break from University. I decided to put the project online for free because I think it is an important issue and I want to get the information out.
This documentary examines marijuana use and culture after legalization in Oregon and Washington. Weed has become far more prevalent in certain communities, while pot use has not changed at all in others. The documentary also looks at dabbing, mole bowls, driving high, the gateway drug theory, addiction, and the current state of cannabis research. University of Washington, University of Oregon, Rural Oregon and inner-city Portland are all featured. Marijuana may be relatively harmless compared to other drugs, but what is dangerous is the culture of marijuana use. It is very socially acceptable to use marijuana all day everyday, whereas other drugs it is not at all. There needs to be more research put in to marijuana and the findings of that research should dictate the future of marijuana culture.

Sneaky Ways Movie Theaters Get You To Spend More Money
Between ticket prices and concessions, movie theaters are expensive. But movie theater chains like AMC and Regal only keep around 50% of the revenue from ticket sales each year. But theaters are able to keep over 80% of concessions revenue as profit. So most theaters are designed to get you to spend money on food. And it works, AMC reports that more than 71% of attendees spend money on concessions.

My documentary from 2013 about the English classical music composer of Sierra-Leonean descent, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912), was made during the centennial of SC-T's death in 2012, and includes a number of excellent premiere recordings of SC-T works. Concentrating on Coleridge-Taylor and his visits to the United States in 1904, 1906 and 1910 — and his influence on the founders of the African-American Civil Rights Movement and the NAACP — this documentary is a who's-who of SC-T scholarship, with commentary by historians who have spent their lives researching SC-T and his work. Additional first rate performances are contributed by Rachel Barton Pine, violinist, Rodrick Dixon, tenor, and a score of talented African-American singers and instrumentalists. Mini documentaries within give insight into the lives of Maud Powell and J. Rosamond Johnson. Of special interest is the performance of one of SC-T's last works, Keep me From Sinking Down, for violin and orchestra, based on the African-American spiritual — prepared from the manuscript score and presented on the centennial of its first performance on location in Norfolk, Connecticut, where American violinist Maud Powell first played the work on June 4, 1912.
