24 HOURS WITH REMOTE SIBERIAN TRIBE in Buryatia, Russia
We've finally made it to Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Railway!
Our first adventure was arriving in Ulan-Ude, near Lake Baikal, and driving hundreds of kilometres into the wilderness to meet a remote Siberian tribe in Buryatia, Russia.
Buryatia is one of Russia's most unique republics. It has a mongol heritage, and the people who live here are descendants of the Golden Horde. The landscape is called The Steppe, a vast sweeping grassland that covers central Asia. Tribes who live here have traditionally been nomadic, making small camps like the one we stay in. This is our documentary of 24 hours with this tribe.
This experience put us outside our comfort zones. We ate some interesting Russian food like raw sheep liver, rode horses, wrestled, and had the time of our lives. While this experience isn't for everyone, it's definitely for me. This was one of my favourite days on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The people we met in this small village made it especially memorable. You can tell by their faces, that they are kind and generous. We felt right at home in this remote part of Russia.

Construction of cable-stayed bridge in Vladivostok - film, January 2012
Vostok 2018: Russia and China show off their forces
VLADIMIR Putin today vowed to strengthen his mighty army and supply it with even more weapons as he watched Russia's biggest war games since the fall of the Soviet Union.
The Vostok 2018 (Восток) drills - taking place in eastern Siberia close to the border with China - involve 300,000 Russian troops as well as joint exercises with the Chinese army.
This is the first time our army and fleet have undergone such a difficult and large-scale test, said President Putin.
The exercises, that involve over a thousand military aircraft as well as up to 36,000 tanks, come amid tense relations between Russia and the West that have fallen to a post-Cold War low.
Speaking at the Tsugol firing range about 80 miles north of the border with China, Putin said Russia was a peaceful country ready for cooperation with any state interested in partnership, but that it was a soldier's duty to be ready to defend his country and its allies.
Therefore we are going to further strengthen our armed forces, supply them with the latest generations of weapons and equipment, develop international military partnership, he said.
The Chinese media have described the People's Liberation Army involvement in the drills as the country's largest-ever dispatch of forces abroad for war games.
Russia has said it is showcasing methods developed during its military intervention in Syria, giving Chinese forces - which haven't fought in a war since 1979 - a glimpse of real combat skills.
The five-day mock battles involve more than DOUBLE the number of recruits currently in the entire British armed forces.
NATO has already condemned the war games as a rehearsal for large-scale conflict” - and experts say they are without doubt the largest in modern Russian history.
It fits into a pattern we have seen over some time - a more assertive Russia, significantly increasing its defence budget and its military presence,” warned an alliance spokesman.
The Russian army has compared the show of force to the USSR's 1981 Zapad war games that saw around 150,000 Warsaw Pact soldiers take part in the largest military exercises of the Soviet era.
Yet the drills - to take place across several training grounds - will dwarf even this notorious exercise when it comes to scale.
Military leaders released video footage of military vehicles, planes, helicopters and ships getting into position for the initial stage of the drills.
The jaw-dropping numbers involved in the Vostok-2018 include:
Around 300,000 battle-ready Russian troops.
More than 1,000 planes, helicopters, and drones.
36,000 tanks and armoured personnel carriers.
More than 80 ships and naval support vessels.
An estimated 30 aircraft from the Chinese air force.
Mongolian troops will also join the battles.
Russia has one million military personnel in total.
Putin’s spokesman said last month that maintaining Russia's defence capabilities is justified, needed and has no alternative as rival powers are frequently quite aggressive and unfriendly”.
The Russian army is rolling out its latest weaponry - Iskander missiles that can carry nuclear warheads, T-80 and T-90 tanks and its recent Su-34 and Su-35 fighter planes.
At sea, the Russian fleet is deploying several frigates equipped with Kalibr missiles that have been used in Syria.
For weeks Russia has been preparing for the drills - at one point closing a road so planes could land near Khabarovsk, and firing missiles from land, surface and submarine at a target in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Sakhalin Island, Russia on $200. Seafood, Skiing and Sushi @Russia: Tips, Tricks & Travel
In this episode of Russia: Tips, Tricks & Travel Tim goes to the little known yet massive Russian island that used to be (partially) part of the Japanese Empire.
Tim Kirby starts his journey downtown next to one of the most regular “guests” on our program Vladimir Lenin. From there he went to the amazing Japanese-styled Sakhalin Regional Museum. History sure makes a guy hungry, so on his way to the region’s first and oldest Japanese restaurant Tim stops by the Anton Pavlovich Chekhov memorial to pay his respects to a major player in the island’s history. At the restaurant Tim speaks with its founder and philanthropist Yutaka Miyanisi who shows our host the proper way to do sushi. One hint, it does not include mayo, not even spicy mayo!
From there Tim decides that he should share the island’s amazing seafood with his family and stocks up at the Central Market (“Успех”/”Uspekh”) with all sorts of fish, crab and caviar.
From there Tim drops his stuff at the Japanese built and inspired Santa Resort Hotel to see how hotel rooms made for the Land of the Rising Sun fare in Russia. After teaching the robot Japanese toilet who is boss Tim heads out to the ski slopes of the Gorny Vosdukh Ski Resort. Thankfully our hero survives the trip down the snowy routes and heads out to the Harat’s Pub downtown to meet up with a fan after it gets dark.
Next Tim has to track down said fan and does so using the old railway still built to Japanese Imperial standards. He then gets exclusive access to the port in Korsakov. From there Tim sneaks into the boat graveyard, you’ll see whether the guard dogs bit him or not jumping over the fence.

30 T-34’s Soviet Medium Tank Came From Laos
Odo Puiu Events invites you to watch ….
30 T-34’s Soviet Medium Tank Came From Laos
The batch of 30 T-34 medium tanks purchased from Laos arrived in Russia in early January.
Media reports on 9 January, citing local sources, stated that the first T-34 medium tanks have arrived in Russia as part of military-technical cooperation with Laos.
During the visit of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to Laos in January last year, agreements were reached on the return of T-34 tanks to Russia.
The combat vehicles has already covered more than 4,500 km by sea and arrived in Vladivostok. Then by rail, it will be delivered to the Moscow region, to the city of Naro-Fominsk.
T-34 tanks transferred by the Lao side is planned to be used during the Victory parades in various cities of Russia, for updating museum exhibits, as well as for making films about the Second World War.
T-34 produced several tens of thousands, then others went – T-54, T-62. We had a huge number of friendly countries scattered around the world, which required military equipment …
Tanks in Laos came after the Vietnamese war in very good condition. And there they were treated very carefully.
But some experts claim that Laos’ transferred tanks in Т-34-85 configuration, are Czechoslovak-made vehicles of the mid-1950s.
The T-34 is a Soviet medium tank that had a profound and lasting effect on the field of tank design. At its introduction in 1940, the T-34 possessed an unprecedented combination of firepower, mobility, protection and ruggedness. Its 76.2 mm high-velocity tank gun provided a substantial increase in firepower over any of its contemporaries, its well-sloped armour was difficult to penetrate by most contemporary anti-tank weapons. When it was first encountered in 1941, German general Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist called it the finest tank in the world and Heinz Guderian affirmed the T-34's vast superiority over existing German armour of the period.
Although its armour and armament were surpassed later in the war, it has often been credited as the most effective, efficient and influential tank design of the Second World War.
The T-34 was the mainstay of Soviet armoured forces throughout the Second World War. Its design allowed it to be continuously refined to meet the constantly evolving needs of the Eastern Front: as the war went on it became more capable, but also quicker and cheaper to produce. Soviet industry would eventually produce over 80,000 T-34s of all variants, allowing steadily greater numbers to be fielded as the war progressed despite the loss of tens of thousands in combat against the German Wehrmacht. Replacing many light and medium tanks in Red Army service, it was the most-produced tank of the war, as well as the second most produced tank of all time (after its successor, the T-54/55 series). At 44,900 losses during the war, it also suffered the most tank losses of all time. Its development led directly to the T-54 and T-55 series of tanks, which in turn evolved into the later T-62, T-72, and T-90 that form the armoured core of many modern armies. T-34 variants were widely exported after World War II, and in 2010 the tank remained in limited front-line service with several developing countries.

Strangest Time Zones You've Never Heard About
You know that feeling when you travel to a new place and you know you’re officially far from home when you have to set your clock back or forward a couple of hours? Well, there are places in the world where you’d have to go not just hours but half hours and even 15 minutes back and forth!
For example, in Australia, the Northern Territory and South Australia use GMT+9:30, and Howe Island has GMT+10:30. To make things even more complicated, South Australia observes Daylight Saving Time unlike the Northern Territory, so from October until April they live by different, still fractional, offsets. If you ever find yourself in Newfoundland in Canada, you’ll also have to set your clock to GMT-3:30, which is a bit weird.
TIMESTAMPS:
Half-hour and quarter-hour offsets 0:39
Arizona, United States 3:17
China is one giant time zone 4:24
The confusion with Russian railways 6:35
Time zones beyond GMT+12 7:21

Music by Epidemic Sound
SUMMARY:
- Many countries in Southern Asia live by different rules and add 30 minutes to the difference. If you think that doesn’t affect a lot of people, here’s an interesting fact! Every fifth person in the world lives in a fractional offset zone in India! The time there is GMT+5:30. There’s no official explanation as to why things are the way they are here, but it supposedly has to do with Indian independence from the British Empire and the desire to emphasize it.
- Arizona doesn’t observe Daylight Savings and is always in the Mountain time zone: GMT-7. However, the Navajo Nation, living in a semi-autonomous Native American territory, does switch the clock. For half of the year, they live one hour ahead of the state of Arizona.
- China belongs to the list of the largest countries in the world and spans an impressive 3,100 miles from east to west. That’s larger than the continental United States. Its giant neighbor Russia boasts 11 time zones, and you’d expect China to have somewhere close to that number. Well, you’d be wrong if you did! The whole country officially has just one time zone: Beijing Standard Time.
- No matter whether you get on at Moscow or Vladivostok, which are 5,500 miles apart, the departure time on your ticket would be in Moscow time. Imagine getting to the train station 30 minutes before departure and finding out you’re actually 8 hours and 30 minutes late. This rule was changed recently, and now the departure times are always local.
- There are places that go beyond that. A few islands in the Pacific Ocean such as Tonga, Samoa, and Tokelau live by GMT+13, and the Line Islands, including Kiritimati, even go by a GMT+14 time zone.

Esta es la historia de Salyut 7 y cómo una tripulación soviética de dos; Vladimir Dzhanibekov y Victor Savinikh, contra todo pronóstico la rescataron en una arriesgada misión que fue la primera de su clase en la exploración del espacial.

Destroying a ‘terrorist stronghold’ with Russian Marines – In the Army Now Ep.22
Today is D-Day: Anna and Pavel join two teams of marines tasked with neutralising a threat in the hills where a “terrorist stronghold” is based. Pavel’s job is to remove landmines and prepare the ground for Anna’s assault team, who intend to use armoured vehicles to ambush the enemy. Their commander praises their efforts and the two receive the awards they have been working towards ever since they arrived in Vladivostok.
When their time with the Russian Pacific Fleet’s marines comes to an end, the pair have a chance to relax. Unfortunately for Anna, Pavel’s idea of fun is more military-style exercises. Keeping his colleague in the dark, he enrols the two of them in a “Heroes’ race” competition that involves running long distances, rope-climbing and a lot of crawling around in mud. None of which is normally Anna’s cup of tea. However, when Pavel drops out straight away after being injured, Anna has to take part for the both of them. It turns out to be the hardest challenge she has faced in Vladivostok. Still, Anna refuses to give up, showing remarkable tenacity and will to win.
