Gouda, Netherlands City Tour
We're visiting the Dutch city of Gouda in this practical guide to seeing the highlights of Gouda, in Holland, in the Netherlands. Most famous for Gouda cheese, but there are many other attractions to enjoy in this beautiful Dutch city. It has some fine examples of that special Dutch feature of the reflecting canals lined by flowers and pedestrian lanes. But here we've got several of these charming neighborhoods we'll show you in the video, and the important building where the cheese was weighed on the main town square.
The Weighing House, or Waag, has for centuries been a central point in town where the all-important cheese was weighed and deals were made.
It now contains the Tourist Information Center and the Cheese and Crafts Museum where you can taste and purchase a variety of cheeses.
The Markt, or marketplace, is the central plaza in the heart of town, home to countless pubs, restaurants and cozy sidewalk cafes.
The exquisitely proportioned Stadhuys, or City Hall, is a gem of late Gothic and early Renaissance architecture, dating from 1449-59.
The traditional cheese market takes place in the plaza every Thursday mornings 10 AM till 1230 from April through the end of August.
The street alongside the marketplace is one of the busiest in town with lots of shops, and especially the restaurants and bars and cafés – usually buzzing with people.
One block away, Groote Kerk, or Great Church, also called Saint John Church, was founded in 1485 and rebuilt after a fire in 1562. The round-arched arcades are borne by 36 pillars supporting the lofty barrel-vaulted ceiling of dark wood. It is the longest church in the Netherlands, at 123 meters.
Our walking route, starting at the train station and down to that central market square, into the church, then we'll continue along a beautiful canal down to the harbor, and then circling back around in a complete round trip walking tour of the city, and ending up back at the train station. Now we continue along the Westhaven canal.
You can easily walk along this splendid canal from the town center, only 600 meters distance - it'll take you about five minutes - down to the historic harbor where you will find clippers, barges and sailing vessels lying majestically alongside each other in the Museum Harbor, and most of these are still lived in.
In the Middle Ages, due to its central location, the town offered passage to ships en-route to Amsterdam and Flanders. After the 15th century, Gouda's role in international shipping went into decline.
Walking back towards the center from the harbor, you'll see another historic site – it's a windmill, very characteristic of the Netherlands.
We're taking a circular route through town, walking along yet another beautiful canal, observing all these bicycles going back and forth. You can actually rent a bicycle here if you'd like to peddle around in town or even extend out to some of the surrounding areas.
This route to the harbor, and then returning along a few of the less traveled back lanes, gets you off the beaten track. It's an easy stroll that doesn't take much time, and this route can bring you past another few blocks of shopping. Here you can see a benefit of being here when the cheese market is not on – you will not see very many other tourists. Then passing along a few residential blocks with their old-fashioned buildings. It's nice to get away from the historic highlights for a while and into a neighborhood that's more for locals. It's quiet and peaceful over here.
Then you will come around the bend and find what is perhaps the prettiest of the canal scenes in town along what's called the Turfmarkt.
Turf was that peat, or combustible decaying soil that was very important to the old Dutch for cooking and heating their homes, much like in Ireland and elsewhere in the north of Europe.
This route takes us back to the center at the marketplace.
There's a lovely block behind the market square. We can have a peek at it showing that very special Dutch combination of shop fronts along a pedestrian lane next to a charming little canal – circles on the map and next to it is the new market, a modern little shopping mall.
Gouda is generally visited as a daytrip from other nearby cities, which are only 20 to 30 minutes away by train. Even all the way to Amsterdam is just 52 minutes. So you can easily visit Gouda for most of the day without spending the night there. Or if you wish to overnight, there are some fine hotels such as a four-star Best Western.
The superb Dutch rail system makes it very easy to travel around in this relatively small nation, as you will see in our many other movies about the Netherlands, where we take you to all of the highlights of this wonderful country. Look for them in our collection.

Gouda population 70,828 in 2009) is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland.
Gouda, which was granted city rights in 1272, is famous for its Gouda cheese, smoking pipes, and 15th-century city hall.
In the Middle Ages, a settlement was founded at the location of the current city by the Van der Goude family, who built a fortified castle alongside the banks of the Gouwe River, from which the family and the city took its name. The area, originally marshland, developed over the course of two centuries. By 1225, a canal was linked to the Gouwe and its estuary was transformed into a harbour. Gouda's array of historic churches and other buildings makes it a very popular day trip destination.
Gouda is world famous for its Gouda cheese, which is still traded on its cheese market, held each Thursday. Gouda is also known for the fabrication of candles, smoking pipes, and stroopwafels. Gouda used to have a considerable linen industry and a number of beer breweries.
The world famous Gouda cheese is not made in the city itself but in the surrounding region. It derives its name from being traded in Gouda where the city council imposes stringent quality controls.
The economy of the city centre is based on tourism, leisure and retail, while offices are located at the outskirts of the city. Currently, there are over 32,000 jobs in the city, mainly in commercial and healthcare services.

Traveling between cities was so easy because the Netherlands has got perhaps the best train system in Europe. It's phenomenal. The trains are clean, fast, frequent and not expensive. This is a small country, so the cities are relatively close together, you can get from one to the next and 15 or 30 minutes usually. This superb rail service in itself makes a good reason to visit this country, shift for it really does eliminate some of those logistical problems of travel, just getting around. It is so easy with these trains.
Some call it Holland, but the country is The Netherlands. Holland is two provinces in the Netherlands.

Gouda City -The Netherlands
Visit Gouda
Gouda gained city rights in 1272 and the city derives its name from the old Dutch name of the Gouwe River which flows through Gouda.
Visit every Thursday morning the traditional cheese market and watch the farmers and traders bargin for the cheese in the old traditional Dutch manner by clapping of hands. Next, to the cheese market, you will find the fresh food market.
The St Janskerk (church) named after John the Baptist behind the main market square dates back to 1552 and is the longest church in the Netherlands with its 123 meters length containing a total of 72 stain glass windows dating back to the Middle ages displaying scenes from the Bible.
Not to be missed is a visit to the Cheese museum located in the Waag built in 1668 which formerly used to weigh the cheese.

Cheese Museum in Gouda - Tasting Dutch Cheese | Holland Travel Vlog
What is the secret of Dutch cheese? The Dutch produce 650 million kilos of cheese every year. Two third is exported, which makes Holland the largest cheese exporter in the world. On average the Dutch eat 14,3 kilos of cheese per person per year.
In this video we will tell you the secret behind the delicious Dutch cheese or in particular GOUDA CHEESE!!
I got the chance to visit Gouda for the first time. I always wanted to go there to visit the famous cheese market. The amazing spectacle where the traders and farmers negotiate the price of the cheese is held every Thursday. After you have seen the show on the market and the Dutch women/men, dressed in typical Dutch cloths, singing Dutch songs also pay a visit to Goudse Waag.
This authentic building, designed in 1668 by architect Pieter Post, is also the location of the Gouda Tourist Information Office (VVV).
The ground floor of the Goudse Waag was formerly used to weigh cheese. Today, the Goudse Waag houses the Cheese and Crafts Museum. Here, one can learn about the building’s history, the products weighed and traded, and how cheese is made. The ground floor is also the location of the Gouda Tourist Information Office.

Camp of Gouda
Director: unknown | Production Country: The Netherlands | Year: 1916 | Production Company: unknown | FLM71886 | Film from the collection of EYE (Amsterdam) - eyefilm.nl
At the beginning of the First World War, camps were set up in several Dutch cities for Belgian refugees. Gouda was one of the places that hosted the fleeing Belgians, though it is not certain that this film was actually shot there.
Camp of Gouda contains images of barracks, of several dignitaries, and of people leaving a wooden church. Children go to school, and play on a field. Girls and young women make lace and sew clothing in a sewing workshop. Men make brooms. The documentary ends with shots of the meal: in a large barrack, women with huge pans distribute the food.

Koninklijke Stearine Kaarsenfabriek Gouda
Director: Willy Mullens | Production Country: The Netherlands | Year: 1918 | Production Company: s-Gravenhaagsche Filmfabriek | FLM36209 | Film from the collection of EYE (Amsterdam) -
Corporate film for the Stearine Candle Factory in Gouda, with shots of the building complex and the production process. The film ends with a shot of workers leaving the factory, which at the time was a familiar fixture of corporate films. This film, made by Willy Mullens in 1918, is illustrative of the many corporate films that Mullens produced for his companies 's-Gravenhaagsche Filmfabriek and Haghe Film.
Royal Stearine Candle Factory in Gouda was one of the few films released by the production company Commerciële en Industriële Film (CIF), which after World War One focused on making corporate films to promote Dutch industries. Haghe Film was to produce the films, while the CIF would bring in the assignments and distribute the films. But little came of these efforts.
After the release of The Royal Stearine Candle Factory in Gouda, the CIF died a quick and quiet death.
