Places to see in ( Avignon - France ) Pope's Palace

The Palais des Papes - Papal palace is a historical palace located in Avignon, southern France. It is one of the largest and most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Once a fortress and palace, the papal residence was the seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century. Six papal conclaves were held in the Palais, leading to the elections of Benedict XII in 1334, Clement VI in 1342, Innocent VI in 1352, Urban V in 1362, Gregory XI in 1370 and Antipope Benedict XIII in 1394.

Listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Popes' Palace is one of the 10 most visited monuments in France with 650,000 visitors per year. A true symbol of the influence of Western Christianity in the 14th century, this 15,000m2 masterpiece of a monument is the largest medieval fortress and biggest gothic palace of Europe.

Built in less then 20 years starting in 1335, the Popes' Palace is the amalgamation of two palaces built by two popes: Benedict XII, who built the Old Palace to the east and north, and his successor Clement VI who built the New Palace to the south and west.

In the 14th century, the Popes' Palace was occupied by 7 popes and 2 popes of the Papal Schism before the return of the papacy to Rome. Occupied by the Legates and Vice-Legates starting in the 15th century then transformed into a garrison until 1906, it has undergone various restoration work since. Most recently, the Trouillas Tower has regained its past appearance. The tower houses the 11 stories of the Departmental Archives and its height of 52 metres makes you dizzy as you look up at it from the terrace of the Utopia Manutention Cinema.

Offering countless and incomparable riches, as much architectural as pictorial, the Palace plunges visitors into the heart of the splendour of the papal court. A good hour is needed to discover the more than 25 rooms open to the public: the ceremonial halls, the courtroom, the consistory, the chapels with their magnificent frescoes by the famous painter Matteo Giovanetti and the popes' private apartments.

The Palace organizes cultural events, theme tours, exhibitions and concerts throughout the year. It also houses within its walls the Musée de l'Oeuvre. In summers, a big art exhibition takes up the Great Chapel while the Main Courtyard becomes an open-air theatre with shows from the Avignon Theatre Festival created by Jean Vilar in 1947. Starting in mid-August and continuing until early October, the Popes' Palace is the venue for the Luminescences, a monumental video show and sensorial experience unlike any other.

For a year and a half, I used my camera to document the moments of despair and hope, danger and courage and the birth of true partnership between Palestinians and Israelis. During this period the village has become a symbol of the joint struggle against the barrier and the occupation.  »

Bil'in My Love - Bil'in Habibti בלעין חביבתי

The village of Bil'in is about to lose over a half of its territory
to the separation barrier and to the Israeli settlement Modi'in Elite.
The residents of the village decide join other villages and to embark on a
struggle against the construction of the barrier and are joined by international
and Israeli activists. The director, Shai Carmeli-Pollak arrives together with
the Israeli activists and accompanies the village's struggle for over a year,
focusing on two central figures: Mohammed, a member of the village's local
Committee against the barrier, and Wagee, farmer and father of ten, who is
losing the majority of his land to the barrier and to the settlement.
The insistence of Bil'in's residents and the partnership with the Israelis
attracts local and international media. The village becomes known as the
symbol of the Palestinian-Israeli joint struggle against the separation barrier
and the occupation. The friendship between Shai, the activists and the
people of the village crosses political borders and becomes a love story
between human beings, who refuse to be enemies.

Résumé :
Créer la Florence du XXIème siècle. C'était l'ambition de Pierre Laffite, fondateur de la plus grande technopole européenne, Sophia Antipolis. Un pari osé en 1970, à une époque où l'industrie lourde était reine... Mais l'attractivité du territoire azuréen aidant, le projet a porté ses fruits: personne n'oserait aujourd'hui contester la réussite de Sophia, forte de ses 1400 entreprises et 30.000 emplois. On oublie un peu vite que l'ambition de départ allait au-delà d'un projet économique: l'utopie sophipolitaine voulait mélanger idées et savoir dans un écrin naturel où la culture aurait une place omniprésente. Que reste-t-il du concept de fertilisation croisée chère à Monsieur Laffitte ? Les villages alentours bénéficient-ils des richesses de la technopole? L'équipe d'Attention Grands Travaux a mené l'enquête.

The Yard’s annual festival returns to bring the best of new contemporary theatre to East London. This time, we’ve paired ten of the most exciting and influential artists of today with ten of the brightest young voices of the future.

Le KINOPANORAMA, ancien cinéma Parisien mythique.

Une ballade caméra à l'épaule (12 Kg sans crosse!) dans cette salle de cinéma mythique fermée depuis 2002.
J'ai été hélas contraint d'exclure du montage les meilleurs plans tourné sur trépied issus d' une cassette BETACAM, dont les images trop dégradées par le temps et une numérisation tardive n'étaient plus regardables.
J'ai donc dû faire au mieux avec les éléments à peu près exploitables qu'il me restait.
Un petit témoignage sans prétention sur cette salle emblématique et chargée d'histoire, dont seuls Le Rex, Le Normandie et Le Max Linder subsistent encore.
Technicien dans divers secteurs du cinéma depuis plus de 35 ans, je suis également collectionneur de films et de matériels.

'Nous, les intranquilles', un long métrage documentaire de Nicolas Contant et du Groupe Cinéma du centre Artaud

'Nous, les intranquilles' commence au centre d’accueil psychothérapeutique Artaud. Le groupe cinéma du centre raconte la maladie, la thérapie, leur rapport au monde. Après un premier geste documentaire, le film devient participatif et met en scène son élaboration en collectif.
Les personnages cherchent à donner une image humaine de la folie. Ils s’amusent des idées reçues pour mieux les subvertir. En s’emparant ensemble du projet artistique, ils montrent qu’un autre monde est possible.

Dans cette video, je vous parle du dernier grand producteur et réalisateur français, Claude Berri.
Ce mini documentaire ne pourra pas revenir sur l'intégralité de sa carrière mais je vous explique avec quelques films clés comment comprendre son cinéma et pourquoi il a été si important en France.
J'évoque aussi assez longuement ses collaborations avec Coluche.

la mort de l'utopie-film de Jorge Amat

Film d'avant-garde diffusé en 1974 au Festival d'Avignon et au Cinéma Le Marais. Ce film est l'enfant malheureux de Mai 68 et L'Anti-oedipe de Deleuze

Extrait film : Et maintenant la 4e partie de la trilogie commence

Réalisé par Barbara Bouley-Franchitti et produit en 2009 par la compagnie Un Excursus (conventionnée par la Région Ile-de-France).

Il s'agit d'un film singulier, un mémoire filmique sur l'Orestie d'Eschyle . Et maintenant la quatrième partie de la trilogie commence s'élabore comme une fouille archéologique. Parcours initiatique d'une artiste d'aujourd'hui au cœur de l'Orestie, il prolonge les chemins de pensées de Pier Paolo Pasolini sur cette matrice du théâtre occidental. Ce film-collage analyse les ruptures entre culture archaïque et culture moderne. Manifeste poétique anti-guerre, il nous invite à poser un regard attentif et décalé sur le monde tragique que nous traversons, à critiquer l'espace du système politique et les simulacres de démocratie en cours. Ce film évoque, en conclusion, les conséquences tragiques pour l'occident d'aujourd'hui de la disparition des Furies, ces déesses protectrices de l'environnement, de la famille et de l'hospitalité. Un documentaire fait d'interviews (spécialistes français et italiens du théâtre antique et de l'œuvre pasolinienne), de paysages et d'images d'archives, qui nous entraîne dans une traversée en Italie, en France et en Grèce.

Et maintenant la quatrième partie de la trilogie commence a été diffusé en avant première (en version italienne) à l'Institut National de Drame Antique de Syracuse lors d'un colloque consacré à Pasolini. Il a ensuite été présenté dans plusieurs universités italiennes et françaises, au cinéma l'Utopia (festival d'Avignon 2008), en ouverture du festival « Instants Vidéo » de Marseille et au cinéma Latina à Paris en première partie du film de Pier Paolo Pasolini : Carnet de notes pour une Orestie africaine et en collaboration avec la société Carlotta films, ou encore aux Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers en 2011.

ACMI Conversations: The Future According to Women Documentarians

This talk celebrated International Women’s Day with local filmmakers telling powerful and revealing stories. Filmmakers Sari Braithwaite, Chloe Brugale and Santilla Chingaipe were in conversation with Eloise Ross about their craft and processes, key collaborations and career pathways.

About the speakers

Santilla Chingaipe is an award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker. She spent nearly a decade working for SBS World News which saw her report from across Africa and interview some of the continent's most prominent leaders. Her work explores cultural identities, contemporary migration and politics. Last year she presented a one-off documentary for SBS, Date My Race. Santilla is currently directing and writing documentary on the complexities of Australia’s South Sudanese community. Her latest film, Black As Me, is a short documentary exploring the perception of beauty and race in Australia. She writes regularly for The Saturday Paper.

Chloe Brugale is a screen practitioner with more than fifteen years' experience working across drama and factual productions, distribution, events and festival programming. As the General Manager of Robert Connolly’s company, Arenamedia, Chloe has contributed to many culturally and artistically innovative features, including The Turning, Spear and the box office hit Paper Planes. She also oversaw the successful release campaign of the documentary Chasing Asylum. Chloe’s producer credits include [CENSORED], an experimental documentary by director Sari Braithwaite, and Black As Me, a short film by director Santilla Chingaipe. Prior to Arenamedia, Chloe held positions at the Melbourne International Film Festival as Next Gen and Short Films programmer, the education department of the Cannes Film Festival and the avant-garde Utopia Cinemas in Avignon, France.

Sari Braithwaite is a filmmaker who works across the disciplines of history and film. Her documentary films have played at MIFF, SFF, Adelaide Film Festival, Canberra Film Festival, Antenna Film Festival, and BFI London. She was a recipient of the 2015 AFTRS Creative Fellowship to create an experimental work about Australian censorship. In addition to her own practice, Sari has also worked as a professional researcher on a wide variety of film and television documentaries, and continues to work in universities as a researcher.

Eloise Ross (host) is a writer, critic, and lecturer with a range of experience working with Melbourne film culture, both in organisational roles and as a qualified speaker. She has a PhD in cinema studies from La Trobe University and her research specialises in sound studies, Hollywood history, and the phenomenological experience of the cinema. Eloise has been widely published as a film critic, cultural commentator, and academic. She is a co-curator of the Melbourne Cinémathèque, currently teaches in the film department at Swinburne University, is co-host of the Senses of Cinema podcast.

Sa pièce Tristesses, présentée au Festival d'Avignon il y a deux ans, avait rencontré un bel accueil de la part du public et des critiques, y compris de notre rédaction. Arctique, deuxième volet de sa trilogie sur les échecs de l'humanité s'inscrit dans ce prolongement.
