Weymouth Debenhams big opening 1999, New Bond Street. (9 minutes)
December 1999 Weymouth welcomed the opening of the new Debenhams store in the reconstructed new Bond Street. Does anyone know the man who opened it? The outside works were still in progress, but permission was given for the store to be opened 6 months early to catch the Christmas trade. Several other big name shops followed, and a state of the art cinema was built for Cineworld. Debenhams had previously had a store in St Thomas Street and St Mary Street, Weymouth, which they had taken over from old-established V.H. Bennett. The whole development was carried out around the carefully preserved White Hart Inn That was once the home of artist Sir James Thornhill, who painted the domed ceiling of St Paul's Cathedral, London,. On completion of the works in the summer of 2000, a time capsule was buried beneath a Millennium Stone. That's on a separate video.

A major incident has been declared in Cumbria after some residents were forced to evacuate their homes in towns effectively cut off by flooding caused by Storm Desmond.
Cumbria Police officers and mountain rescue teams are helping to take people from their homes in Keswick and Appleby to a centre in a local school, with around 50 homes thought to have been flooded.
All of the roads surrounding Keswick have been closed, and some rivers in Cumbria have reached their highest ever recorded levels. ©UKNIP
