Places to see in ( Lee on the Solent - UK )
Places to see in ( Lee on the Solent - UK )
Lee-on-the-Solent, often referred to as Lee-on-Solent, is a small seaside district within the Borough of Gosport in Hampshire, England about five miles west of Portsmouth. The area is located on the coast of the Solent. It is primarily a residential area, with an upsurge of mostly local visitors in summer, but is well known as the former home to the Royal Naval Air Station HMS Daedalus (renamed as HMS Ariel from 1959 to 1965).
The district gained its name in the 19th century, during attempts to develop the area into a seaside resort. The area had been referenced long before this, referred to as Lee and numerous variations, including Lebritan. Early impetus for the district's development came from Charles Edmund Newton Robinson, who persuaded his father, John Charles Robinson, art curator and collector, to fund the buying of land.
Lee-on-the Solent has had a long association with aviation. Seaplane trials took place at Lee-on-the-Solent as early as 1915. A base for seaplane training was established in 1917 on the former RNAS Lee-on-Solent, formerly HMS Daedalus, site.
In 1935 the Lee Tower complex was built on the seafront next to the old pier and railway station. It was designed by architects Yates, Cook & Derbyshire, and comprised a white v-shaped Art Deco building with a 120-foot (37 m) tower. The complex housed a cinema, ballroom and restaurant, as well as a viewing platform at the tower's peak. The complex was demolished in 1971 by Gosport Borough Council, with its land now used for the promenade and remembrance gardens.
The views out to sea from the cliffs at Marine Parade are forever changing and are always interesting. From a vantage point on the grassy banks, it is possible to see shipping movements of large container ships and cruisers into Southampton and Portsmouth, sailing boats, ferries and of course the backdrop of the Isle of Wight. The seafront on Marine Parade East is where the Club House is situated for the Lee on the Solent Sailing Club LOSSC.
At the signal station, where the racing starts and finishes can be found a smaller galley that can provide light snacks and soft drinks for the people involved in racing or training of adults and youngsters at the weekend. It is a RYA accredited Sailing School and is open to visitors and day sailors alike. Boats can be hired if you would like to get on the water during hot summers.
On Marine Parade West main sea front stands the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's Lee-on-Solent Memorial erected to commemorate the 1,926 men of the Fleet Air Arm who died in various parts of the world in World War II and have no known grave.
( Lee on the Solent - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Lee on the Solent . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Lee on the Solent - UK

Nature Found Them Guilty - Miskatonic trailer

NATURE FOUND THEM GUILTY: Revenge in Australian Exploitation Cinema
with instructor Lindsay Hallam
Thursday January 19, 2017
at the Horse Hospital - Colonnade, Bloomsbury, London UK

Trailer edited by Kier-La Janisse
About the class:
In the 1970s the Australian film industry underwent a boom that is still unprecedented to this day, experienced two-fold with a strain of respectable arthouse period dramas, and a bunch of down-and-dirty, violent and sexy exploitation films. This lecture will explore how Australian horror cinema of this period incorporates a subversive streak that critiques Australian history and culture through the theme of revenge. It is a theme that is prevalent throughout these films, in particular in the spate of eco-horror films, exemplified by the likes of Long Weekend (1978), and Razorback(1984), where nature itself, often in the form of a rampaging nonhuman animal, seeks to avenge the past exploitation and abuse perpetrated against the land and its native inhabitants.
As well as nature seeking revenge, the fight for survival against human or supernatural forces is also presented in films such as Wake in Fright (1971), The Cars That Ate Paris (1974), The Last Wave (1977) Patrick (1978), Roadgames (1981), and Fair Game (1986), and vengeance even comes from beyond the grave in Next of Kin (1982) and BeDevil (1993). Given that Australia’s colonial past is one that encompasses genocide of the indigenous population, mass animal extinction, environmental destruction, and the glorification of masculine ‘mateship’ that carries a nasty undercurrent of misogyny, this lecture will discuss how it is in these revenge narratives that the darker aspects of Australian national identity are explored and indicted. The class will further investigate how this fascination with revenge for past (and present) wrongs still continues in contemporary Australian genre cinema, in films such as Dying Breed (2006), The Horseman (2008), The Loved Ones (2009), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and Red Christmas (2016).

London rolled out the red carpet for one of its prodigal sons this week, as Jason Statham returned to the capital for the world premiere of Steven Knight's gangland thriller, 'Hummingbird'.
Statham plays a homeless war-vet trapped in London's criminal underworld. Initially convinced he is beyond redemption, he later becomes an avenging angel, seeking his own version of justice.
Predominately famous for starring in frantically violent blockbusters, Statham found the film's emotional depth intriguing: Steven Knight is such a a great writer that he can provide a character that is a lot different to the ones I normally get presented with. It is obviously something I want to pursue and, whilst its not that I don't enjoy the work I usually do, it's always good to push yourself in different areas and this does that, for sure.
'Hummingbird' is screenwriter Steven Knight's directorial debut, and it forms the last in a trilogy of London-based crime capers following the success of 'Dirty Pretty Things' and 'Eastern Promises'.
For the director, it was an opportunity to explore themes of resistance, strength and hubris. As Knight explains, Statham's character embodies all three: I think he's Robin Hood and he's trying to do the right thing and he's trying to get justice, and I think people recognise that in a world where sometimes if you are weak, you can't get justice. He is specifically using his strength to reassert the balance.
The film's title refers to the surveillance drones used by armed forces, and serves as a metaphor for our observation, and judgment, of Statham and the city of London.

Whiteleys
Whiteleys was London's first department store, located in the Bayswater area of London, England. The store's main entrance was located on Queensway. It is now a shopping centre.
The original Whiteleys department store was created by William Whiteley, who started a drapery shop at 31 Westbourne Grove in 1863. By 1867 it had expanded to a row of shops containing 17 separate departments. By 1890 over 6,000 staff were employed in the business, most of them living in company-owned male and female dormitories, having to obey 176 rules and working 7am to 11pm, six days a week. Whiteley also bought massive farmlands and erected food-processing factories to provide produce for the store and for staff catering.
The first store, described as 'an immense symposium of the arts and industries of the nation and of the world', was devastated in an enormous fire in 1897, one of the largest fires in London's history.
The current building was designed by John Belcher and J. Joass, and was opened by the Lord Mayor of London in 1911. It was the height of luxury at the time, including both a theatre and a golf-course on the roof. It appears in a number of early 20th-century novels. In the 1970s, the upper floors of the building were used by International Computers Limited (ICL) for offices and training facilities.
The department store closed down in 1981 and the building purchased by a firm called the Whiteleys Partnership, later acquired by the Standard Life Assurance Company.
In 1989, after extensive remodelling of the interior, Whiteleys was re-opened as a shopping centre. The current Whiteleys contains a large number of shops and places to eat including Marks & Spencer, Books etc, Starbucks and a sushi bar. Leisure facilities include an Odeon cinema and bowling alley.
