The Making of IN SITU Cinema
Over four weekends in July, residents of Chester and Carlisle Road in Queen’s Park, Bedford, joined artists Julie Myers and Maria Anastassiou for a series of film, animation and drawing workshops. These were held in a specially created outdoor filmmaking space, installed on the green at the corner of the two roads.
All the local residents from each road were invited to stop by, chat to the artists about what it's like to live in their part of Bedford and take part in the project, and the children jumped at the chance to make recordings, photos and films about what they liked and what they’d like to see change.

Bedford: The Town They Left Behind Trailer
Like the young men in many small American towns during and after the Great Depression, the boys of Bedford, Virginia, joined their local National Guard unit. They were paid one dollar for every weekend training session - a lot of money in 1941 - and they were given a snazzy uniform to wear that pleased the ladies. Not a bad deal. What they couldn't have foreseen was that Japan would attack Pearl Harbor and draw the United States - and their little Guard unit - into a war that everyone hoped would end all wars. In no time at all, these fresh-faced soldiers were torn from the arms of their girlfriends and new wives and found themselves in training camps, learning to fight for their country. Eventually these boys who had not yet seen a minute of battle would become the first to hit the beaches of Normandy on what we now know as D-Day. An ocean away, their families gathered around radios listening for news. Eventually a wave of telegrams arrived informing Bedford how great a sacrifice it had made: on June 6, 1942, that small community lost more men per capita than any other in America. But Bedford's service to the nation continues. In 2004, for the first time since World War II, that same National Guard unit was called up again, this time to serve in Afghanistan. Soon after it went to Iraq. In Vanguard Cinema release BEDFORD: THE TOWN THEY LEFT BEHIND, The Johnson Group, producers of the acclaimed award-winning documentary PAPER CLIPS, presents a moving cross-generational story of innocence and bravery, of love and loss, of duty, honor and the costs of war.
Bedford machete attack captured on CCTV
Anthony Underwood, 27, smashed in the side door of Bedford police station before running off into a busy road waving a three foot long machete and hammer.
CCTV footage released by Bedfordshire police show unarmed officers streaming out of the station in pursuit of Underwood to try to protect shoppers from potential injury.
The incident ended with a flying rugby tackle by Sgt Phil Boyd, who decided to try to bring Underwood under control when the weapons were suddenly dropped in front of him.
In interview later on in the day, Underwood told officers after being arrested that he was desperate to go to prison to try to kick a £300 per day cocaine habit and thought that his actions would get him there.
Superintendent Rob McCaffray said he was, exceptionally proud of the officers, adding, they acted in the best traditions of the British police service. Unarmed, some without so much as a coat or uniform to protect themselves, they selflessly and instantaneously put themselves between good and evil.
Some later recounted how frightened they were; for themselves, their colleagues and the public. That is the definition of real courage -- realising the danger but continuing to protect the public anyway. It's clearly illustrated on the CCTV and their actions probably prevented serious injury or damage elsewhere in the town.

Vintage Mobile Cinema
This was one of seven units custom built for the British government in the late 1960s, used at the time to promote British industry. Sadly it looks like all other six have disappeared forever, leaving us with the only example of a quite stunning piece of British transport heritage. All efforts have been made to stay faithful to the original format in the restoration of the vehicle, with compromise only being made to benefit the audience and their safety.
