Italy's Riviera: Cinque Terre
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Exploring Italy’s most remote and romantic stretch of Riviera, we visit five tiny port towns: dramatic Vernazza, surrounded by vineyards; reclusive Corniglia, high on its bluff; pastel Manarola; hardscrabble Riomaggiore; and the pint-sized resort of Monterosso. Fishing for anchovies, sipping wine out of rustic barrels, and savoring twinkling Mediterranean vistas, we enjoy the ultimate Riviera adventure. | © 2014 Rick Steves' Europe

Cinque Terre hike from Monterosso to Vernazza, Italy
The trail from Monterosso to Vernazza in the Cinque Terre region of Italy offers one of the grand hiking experiences of Europe. Enjoy spectacular views as the route takes you through enchanting vineyards, along cliff edges and finally to the seaside village of Vernazza where you can celebrate with great Italian food and wine at an outdoor restaurant.
From north to south, the Five Lands of Cinque Terre are Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, each about a mile apart with a total population of nearly 6,000. The hiking trail connecting them passes through terraced vineyards that offer wonderful views for much of the way and is not overly strenuous for the typical traveler. Total trail length is 7 miles, with each section between the towns covered in a comfortable walk averaging 2 hours. This episode brings you on the most popular and beautiful leg from Monterosso Al Mare to Vernazza. We present the show with multiple images sometimes in the screen toi give you a multimedia experience, and then we repeat the entire hike on a single screen later in the program with added narration. This is a practical guide showing you what the hike requires and the beauties it delivers.
Cinque Terre Hiking
Travel with REI to The Cinque Terre - bit.ly/1pMEUyK
It could be a painting by Picasso—five picturesque fishing villages perched on Mediterranean hillsides, splendidly brushed in sun-washed colors. Medieval fortresses and ripe, plentiful vineyards contrast with harbors filled with gleaming yachts. This enticing vision exists on the Italian Riviera between Genoa and La Spezia. From tiny fishing ports teeming with colorful boats, our walking adventure spans some of the most glorious terrain in Italy.

More info about travel to the Cinque Terre: On this leg of the Cinque Terre hike, we descend from ridge-top Corniglia to coastal Manarola.

Hiking All of Cinque Terre, Italy IN ONE DAY
If you've ever wondered what it's like to hike Cinque Terre, this is it. Come along as we hike from Monterosso to Riomaggiore and explore Vernazza, Corniglia, and Manarola along the way.
I also wanted to give you an overall travel guide to hiking Cinque Terre, so here are all the distances and details (with timestamps from the video):
Start: 9.21am get off train in Monterosso (0:01)
30 minutes - explore Monterosso, walk over to trail head (0:13)
9.57am - Buy tickets on the trail, 7.50 euro each. (0:41) Medium-ly difficult hike to Vernazza on main Coastal Trail #2 (0:48) (3.3km, 2.1mi)
11.20am - Arrive in Vernazza (1:32), explore for 40 minutes, or an hour if you want to go up to the castle
12.00 noon - difficult hike to Corniglia on main Coastal Trail #2 (2:02). Up from Vernazza is hard, but going down to Corniglia is easy. (3.2km, 2mi)
1.25pm - Arrive in Corniglia (2:26), Explore for 35 minutes
2.00pm - Very difficult hike to Manarola via Volastra. (3:01) Trail #2 was still closed due to landslides. We took Trail 587 (also known as 7a depending on which sign you're looking at) - very difficult climb, but pretty. Hike up 30 minutes until it connects with Trail 586 (still called trail 7a on some maps, also 6d) at 3:23. Take a right and climb a little higher until it levels out. Follow this for 50 minutes through vineyards straight into Volastra (4:25) and you'll see signs for Manarola. This is Trail 506 (or 6).
Down the 1100+ steps for 10 minutes (4:39). (total 5.5km, 3.4mi)
3.52pm - Arrive in Manarola (4:45), explore for 1 hour (includes eating too)
4.50pm - Via dell'Amore is still closed, so we took Trail 531 up and over (5:37). Very steep up (600+ stairs), slippery steep rock/sandy trail down. Difficult, but short. (1km, 0.62mi)
5.38pm - Arrive in Riomaggiore (6:35)
5.45pm - Take the train back to La Spezia (6:45)

CINQUE TERRE It's A Difficult Hike! It Took 6 Hours But It Was Worth It.
We read online that the Hike between towns is not that difficult and should only take a couple of hours. This was not our experience but it is still worth it as the beauty is unmatched!
To save money we stayed in La Spezia, a town just outside Cinque Terre. Then we got a two day train pass for our family to travel back and forth between towns. It ended up being a great idea. Plus La Spezia is a nice Italian town as well.
Cinque Terre, which means Five Lands, comprised of the five small coastal villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso located in the Italian region of Liguria. We hiked the Blue trail which links all five towns. This trail is long, treacherous at some points, and absolutely beautiful. We loved Cinque Terre and recommend it to anyone up for an adventure. See how ours unfolds.

Trekking CINQUE TERRE, ITALY! ???? We visit Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola & Riomaggiore
❤️ Trekking the Cinque Terre trail in Italy... from... Monterosso to Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. ????
TREKKING MAP:
Çinque Tære, translates to Five Lands in Italian. On this episode we visit each unique town along the coast of the Italian Riviera.
Day 1: Monterosso to Vernazza ( FREE ROUTE )
Day 2: Riomaggiore to Manarola ( PAID NATIONAL FEE )
Day 3: Vernazza to Corniglia ( FREE ROUTE )
The Cinque Terre National park boasts hiking trails that link the colourful villages which are UNESCO World Heritage listed.
OUR EXPERIENCE:
We stayed in Monterosso in May 2018. After trekking each day we caught the train back to our accomodation every night. The public transport runs regularly but be careful of pick pockets. Warning signs are everywhere at train stations, although we didn’t have a problem.
BACKGROUND:
The villages were severely impacted by torrential rains and flooding which caused deadly mudslides in 2011, killing 9 people.
For current information on the walking trails visit:
CLOSURES:
Riomaggiore - Manarola: The main part of the trail is closed (expected to open in April 2021). But just because the MAIN trail is closed, doesn’t mean you can’t trek between these destinations. There are alternate routes higher in the cliffs.

Cinque Terre, Italy: Manarola and Riomaggiore
More info about travel to the Cinque Terre: Rick explores more of the Cinque Terre, from Manarola's cemeteries high in the hills to Riomaggiore's tangle of pastel houses.
At you'll find money-saving travel tips, small-group tours, guidebooks, TV shows, radio programs, podcasts, and more on this destination.
Monterosso, and Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy
Monterosso, Cinque Terre, Italy, is on the north end of the chain is largest of the five hamlets and makes a good home base because it has 20 hotels, the only sandy beach, excellent restaurants, and the start of the hiking trail. It is also the only one in which long-distance trains stop, so it is easy to reach by rail service from throughout Europe.
You arrive by train at Monterosso in the newer section built in the 1970s, then walk through a short tunnel into the Old Town. The train goes right by the beaches so it’s really accessible and yet you can’t drive here very easily. The road don’t connect directly from one village to the next. So they have been protected and sheltered, and they are just as quaint and charming as could be -- for pedestrians only when you get into the heart of town.
Monterosso has a handful of historic sites, including a Cappucine convent and church, a medieval tower, castle ruins, and WWII bunker, but you are here primarily here to wander the little lanes for a few hours, admire the cluster of picturesque buildings, eat well, and use the town as a springboard for visiting the region.
Of course, for the shoppers, there’s always that chance to find the special souvenir or elusive outfit in little, out-of-the-way boutiques that you would never find at home or on the main shopping circuits, so there’s something for everybody here in the Cinque Terre.
The next destination down the coast is Vernazza, which we reach in 5 minutes by train. Vernazza may be the most beautiful of all, set perfectly in a tiny valley on the edge of the sea, with colorful homes built one on top of the next and framed by a couple of churches and towers. It’s a little bigger than Corniglia and Manarola, and yet it is still very, very small – so small that you could walk from one end to the other in about 10 minutes, but you’ll want to slow down and get into the local pace. There’s no rush here. Locals are just hanging out. They are enjoying life as much as the visitors do. The buildings have been standing for many centuries and they’re not going anywhere, so take your time, explore the little side alleys, and yes, there are going to be staircases. After all, these are hill-towns, so there are hardly any flat, level surfaces here, but it’s easy enough.
Cinque Terre - 5 Terre
We visited the heart of Liguria region with it’s stunning shore line and beautiful fishing villages. Welcome to Cinque Terre!
All five villages connected with gorgeous trail. In one full day you can visit all of them by following the trail. Enjoy the typical Ligurian food and breathtaking views.

Abbiamo visitato il cuore della Liguria con la bellissima costa con i suoi molto caratteristici villaggi. Benvenuto in Cinque Terre!

Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, Italy
Enchanting, charming Riomaggiore is the grand climax to our survey of Cinque Terre. Here too you see that familiar pattern -- the houses tumbling down the cliffs to the water’s edge and a main pedestrian street rising up from the tiny cove, surrounded by terraced homes covering the hillside, rising high.
Regular ferry service connects each of the villages, and from Manarola it is just a 10-minute cruise to Riomaggiore, the last of the five. It’s a nice ride with splendid views of the coastal cliffs and hills above, and the blue sea all around.
It’s a surprising mix of urban high density in the midst of a tranquil, rural setting. It is very quiet when you walk down the little side streets, especially in the off-season, which is highly recommended.
Manarola, Cinque Terre 2019 4k | The Most Amazing Town in Italy

Its hiking trails are among the most beautiful in Italy and if you are an outdoor lover, or someone that wants to take a walk in between your bowls of pasta, it’s a great way to begin discovering what Manarola, and the rest of Cinque Terre has to offer.
Romantic Walk
With Manarola’s breathtaking views and stunning cliffside, just a simple walk on the boardwalk is a must if you are looking for something romantic to do!
Explore the Village
In the village, you can find unique shops and cafes while enjoying some of the best wine you’ve ever had - for only a couple of Euros! Sit back and relax while gazing at the boats cruising along the Ligurian sea.

Manarola’s unique architecture paints a picture of the village’s history. Manarola may be the oldest of the towns in the Cinque Terre, with the one of the churches, San Lorenzo, dating all the way back to 1338. Manarola is also famous for the pastel coloured houses that adds to the vibrant charm.
Chomp on the Delicious Food
From seafood to gelato, indulge on some of the best food Italy has to offer in Manarola. Although it is a small town, its food really does speak volumes. You have to taste it for yourself! All while enjoying stunning views of the Ligurian Sea.

Explore Italy's Cinque Terre region on an unforgettable walking tour with UTracks. View all Cinque Terre tours:
About Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre in Liguria are a series of five small fishing villages dug into the cliffs where the Apennine mountains meet the Mediterranean coast line.
Each village has retained its character and traditions from earlier times, impressively perched between the rocky shoreline and the steep terraced hills.
The extensive network of trails connecting the villages pass through olive groves and terraced vineyards, with sweeping views of the vast expanse of the Mediterranean below.
Beyond the five villages of Cinque Terre the walks take in some of the lesser known villages, towns and stretches of the Ligurian coastline.
This centre based walk will see you living like a local, based in an apartment in the charming middle town of Corniglia and sourcing your wine, bread and antipasto from the local providers.
