Cinque Torri - Via Miriam - Cortina d'Ampezzo

Cinque Torri, Nuvolau shelter and Giau pass - A beautiful loop in the Dolomites
In this episode I attack a great 16km loop in the Dolomites.
The starting point is 5 torri cable car station. From there we'll walk all the way to 5 torri, a beautiful rock formation. Then we'll continue towards Nuvolau shelter, to end our journey at Giau pass.
An amazing walk through some stunning sceneries.

A Rock Climbers' Guide to Cinque Torri in the Italian Dolomites | Rock Climbing Vlog Ep. 36
Cinque Torri (5 Torri) in the Italian Dolomites is one of the best rock climbing spots in Europe. In this rock climbing video, I will introduce you to Cinque Torri in the Italian Dolomites and talk about what multi pitch routes and why you should visit this spectacular place in the Italian Dolomites next to Tofana de Rozes. And if you watch the full rock climb-ing video I will share a few tips about accommodation close to Cinque Torri, so you are not consuming all of your time approaching
Cinque Torri is a series of rock towers located just south of Passo Falzarego above Cortina d’Ampezzo. Even though Cinque Torri means ‘Five Towers’, there are actually several more - Torre Grande being the largest one. Here you will find over 150 multipitch rock climbing routes and sport climbing routes! The multipitch are rather short and usually no more than between 50 to 150 meters. Due to the short routes, Cinque Torri in the Italian Dolomites, is a great place if you are a beginner looking for building multipitch skill or if your time in the Italian Dolomites is limited.
Most rock climbing routes at Cinque Torri (5 Torri) are mixed trad within grade III to VII, but there are also fully bolted sport climbing routes up to French 7b. Therefore the multipitch climbing routes are very beginner friendly. Most of the multipitch routes at Cinque Torri (5 Torri) are equipped with pitons or are scarcely bolted, so I would really recommend to bring a small rack of cams
The classical rock climbing routes at Cinque Torri (5 Torri) are Via Myriam, Diretta Dimai and Via Finlandia on Torre Grande, but there are numerous other really great climbs.
If you are looking for longer, harder multipitch rock climbing routes then you should probably consider climbing the Tofana di Rozes overlooking the Cinque Torri from the North. Or you should consider going to Marmolada or Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
In terms of accommodation there are two refugio’s close by. Refugio Scoiattoli and Rifugio Cinque Torri. Since it is illegal to camp in the Dolomites outside camping sites you should consider staying at one of these to minimize approach. You can park your car at Baita Bai de Dones and hike up or take the skiflift. Or you can drive up the extremely narrow road to Rifugio Cinque Torri, but there are not many parking spots here and it is very hard to make a u-turn.
If you have enjoyed watching this rock climbing video about Cinque Torri (5 Torri) in the Italian Dolomites, then you should also consider watching some of the other rock climbing videos that I have done from the Italian Dolomites!
And leave a comment below if you have some insights about other great sport climbing crags around the Italian Dolomites.

Places to see in ( Cortina d'Ampezzo - Italy ) Cinque Torri
Cinque Torri (sometimes named also Cinque Torri di Averau; German: Fünf Türme) are a small group belonging to Nuvolao group, in the Dolomiti Ampezzane (part of the Eastern Dolomites) north-west of San Vito di Cadore and south-west of Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Cinque Torri, as all the other mountains in the area, are made of Dolomia, with a particular pale grey colour. The group is formed by five towers (which give the name to the mountain) with a maximum elevation of 2.361 m (Torre Grande). Every tower has its own name:
Torre Grande, the highest one has three very appealing peaks for rock climbers: Cima Nord, Cima Sud e Cima Ovest;
Torre Seconda, also named Torre del Barancio or Torre Romana;
Terza Torre, or Torre Latina;
Quarta Torre, formed by two blocks of rock with different height, respectively called then Torre Quarta Bassa and Torre Quarta Alta;
Quinta Torre, or Torre Inglese.
They are located in the south-west area of the valley of Cortina d'Ampezzo, north of the Averau mountain, which Cinque Torri can be considered part of. In the Cinque Torri area there are the following rifugi (mountain hut):
Rifugio Cinque Torri, m 2.137
Rifugio Scoiattoli, m 2.255
During summer it is possible to do excursions in the woods and on paths, among which it is worth to mention Alta Via 1 of the Dolomites, the Muraglia di Giau (along the border between comuni of Cortina and San Vito di Cadore, itineraries towards Nuvolau e il Passo Giau and the historical path in the trenches of the World War I.
The towers also provide good and popular rock climbing with various routes at a range of grades up all of the towers. In winter, Cinque Torri are a very important ski area, whose tracks belong to the wider Dolomiti Superski area. Therefore, they are connected to the nearby mountains Lagazuoi and Col Gallina. Until a few years ago it was possible to ski only towards Lagazuoi - Col Gallina - Cinque Torri, but starting from winter season 2008-2009 it is possible also to go from the Cinque Torri area to the higher area of Falzarego Pass by mean of the lift Croda Negra and the corresponding track beyond Averau mountain.

RIFUGIO SCOIATTOLI - CINQUE TORRI, PASSO GIAU, COLLE SANTA LUCIA DOLOMITES ITALY
After we finished our hike around Lago Di Braies, In Case you missed that video here is the link :
We drove to Passo Giau. This was our first experience of staying in a Mountain Rifugio, and it certainly lived up to all our expectations, as we chose Rifugio Scoiatolli, which provides modern facilities, fantastic dining options, comfortable beds and stunning views of the mountains.
It is recommended to book early to get the private room options (the bathrooms are all shared, but were clean and hygenic).
Getting to the Rifugio can be done via two hiking routes from Paso Giau. The route we chose (Route 443) starts from behind the Berghotel Paso Giau, and takes you through a series of rocky and steep mountain faces before ending in a steep hike up to reach the Rifugio.
The views from the hike are quite stunning and while the hike was reasonably tough, the experience was rewarding. The hike took us about 2 hours, and was a medium to tough level hike, so proper hiking gear is recommended.
The Rifugio had great options for dinner and breakfast, along with a good selection of wines and beers to enjoy after a day of hiking and exploring the area. Do try the Tiramisu if you fancy something sweet...
One of the advantages of staying at the Rifugio is that you can wake up early in the morning to capture the stunning vistas as the sunshine fills the valley and comes through the mountains, and the peaceful morning is not disturbed by tourist crowds.
Getting back to Paso Giau, we decided to hike to Rifugio Averau (30 minutes from Scoiatolli) and take the ski-lift down to Rifugio Fedare, and hike back to the Hotel, which took another hour.
The hotel is a favored hot-spot for Bikers and Cyclists, and serves a good selection of food and desserts. We tried an Apple Strudel with Ice-Cream. We then made a short visit to Colle Santa Lucia before heading onward to our next hike to Rifugio Locatelli.
