South Africa: Hooked on Hiking - ????Circles in a Forest 9 km/3 hr trail. Knysna.
Quite a challenging little trail on account of the gradients - but superb. We saw elephant droppings - there are rumored to be about 5 elusive elephants in the forest. One was captured on video two weeks ago and appeared on Facebook. Today we heard baboons nearby but they did not bother us. (21 hikers made up our party).
Hooked on Hiking : Lawnwood Circle Trail - Knysna forest
Starting at the SANParks office - pay, park and off you go. An amusing mancam has stood watch outside the smallholding here for years.
At the Dalene Mathee Memorial picnic site - hike to the right. Following this beautiful trail of inclines and declines, you will cross a pristine stream. Watch out for the elusive Knysna elephant, beautiful Knysna Loerie birds (toucans) but be wary of baboons.
The 3 to 4 hour hike (dependant on the breaks you take) is really worthwhile. You emerge from the edge of the forest to amble through a small settlement of farms. The scarecrows are for the baboons, not crows! These farmers though well fortified, have a great sense of humour. Follow the long sand road to arrive back where you began - at the rear of the SANParks office.
Note: Dalene Mathee is a well-known South African author. She wrote 'Circles in the Forest' among other works. When she was alive, she would come to the Knysna forests to write in solitude and peace. Her favourite place on earth.
Circles in a Forest - Opening Scene
Set in the Knysna Forest in circa 1878, the young Saul works together with his father as independent lumber jacks in the African jungle.The heartless penny-pinching owner of the sawmill McDonald pays them only lowest amounts, forcing the workers to hunt wild living elephants for their ivory. However Saul has befriended one of the intelligent animals and refuses to join the hunt. Thrown out by his father, he starts to work for McDonald's Mill, who appreciates his knowledge of the jungle, but still treats him like dirt. But still Saul stays with him for the years to come, since he's fallen in love with McDonald's precious daughter Kate - which has to be kept secret from him by all means.

South Africa. Knysna Valley Flood.
November 2007. We were caught in this flood overnight at our home until NSRI rescued us by dinghy at 11 am. It felt as if we were on the Titanic. We had no idea how far up the first floor stairway the waters would rise. We could hear the furniture below and garage items bashing into the ground floor walls underneath us and huge logs from the forest kept crashing into the house. The swimming pool was flooded. We were advised not to try swimming out of the flood due to the debris and strong currents. We had a 4 mth old baby with us so that was not an option and we had to wait until rescue came. Thank God for NSRI ♡
