Rob Roy Way 2017 Section Hike - Day 3: Aberfeldy to PItlochry (female solo hike)
This is the third and final episode from my section hike of the Rob Roy Way, walking from Aberfeldy to Pitlochry (15km / 9.5miles).
That day I woke up after a very short night (the price to pay for having attended the Aberfeldy Festival the night before) and set off to reach Pitlochry by lunchtime to meet my friends and drive back to Edinburgh.
Such a beautiful day - first walking by the shores of the River Tay and then up on the moors overlooking the valley. I wish I'd felt a bit less tired but yet again, the views rewarded my efforts :) I recommend this section as a day hike if you're short of time.

Lady Mary's walk at Crieff, part 1
The walk along the north bank of the River Earn, was created in 1815 by Sir Patrick Murray and because it was his daughters favourite it was named after her. It also remains one of the favourite walks for the people of Crieff and its visitors.
From the car park at Macrosty Park a path leads about 400m along the side of the Turret burn to where Lady Mary's Walk begins.
Throughout the year, the walk dramatically changes it's appearance with the seasons. Spring flowers. Lush, warm and sheltered in Summer. Rich reds and yellows of Autumn. Clear, crisp and refreshing in Winter.
The Earn is of course an important salmon river.
At the western end of the Walk there is a choice: back along Laggan Road to Crieff or for a more demanding walk, on to Bairds Monument.
In the 17th century Crieff was Perthshire's principal market town. Scotland's largest cattle sales were held here, the animals being driven from all over the Highlands. Many dealers came up from the south and the cattle were then herded on into England along drove roads that today are frequented by walkers.
Family Bike Ride in Falkland
Lovely day spent outdoors as a family on the bikes in Falkland, Fife, Scotland. Florence took the lead on this one riding her Islabikes Beinn 20 Large and did us proud.
The route we took starts and ends at the Pillars of Hercules Organic Farm Shop and Cafe. It's a favourite place of ours for spending time outdoors for hiking and cycling. The route we took in this video is a mix of quiet road, single and double track through the forest and woodland around the Falkland Estate on the northern edge of the Lomond Hills. The echoey cave we visited is the Tyndall Bruce Monument which was built in 1855.

Harworth Colliery: Towering Above The Rest
A short montage of Harworth Colliery featuring its towers, in which number one tower stood proud as Nottinghamshire's tallest building at 80m tall until its demolition on the 11th of April 2016.
Built between 1986 and 1989 it was the tallest mining tower in Europe and housed the largest and most powerful winding motor in UK mining history at a huge 4000kw.
The tower was built using the UK's first 'slipform' method which used a continuous supply of concrete and would be built non-stop rising at one inch every 24 hours. The same method was later used to build Wembley Stadium in London and Cottam power station chimneys.
On the 10th of April 2016, a controlled explosion failed to demolish her after hundreds of current and former Harworth & Bircotes residents and ex-miners braved the morning cold.
It was decided by lunch time that the demolition crew would bring in remote robots to hammer at her foundations, but even that proved too difficult and by the falling darkness, they stopped work until the next day.
On the 12th of April 2016, she fell at 08.17.
There was deep heartbreak and anger after lack of information mean't no one knew she would be coming down early in the morning, so most people missed her fall.
Her fall marks the end of 93 years of mining at Harworth.
The land has permission to build up to 1600 houses with shops, parks and a new school.

Allan Ward video of the Monklands Ramblers - monklandsramblers.org.uk
Hello, these are the home pages of the Monklands Ramblers Club, one of the largest R.A. clubs in Scotland, and the first Scottish R.A. club on the Internet! We are based in the Monklands area of Central Scotland in North Lanarkshire, some 12 miles east of Glasgow. The two major towns in the area are Airdrie and Coatbridge, and it is from these towns that the majority of our 150+ members come from. There are also a significant number of members from other areas of Lanarkshire, in particular, Hamilton and Blantyre.
The club was formed in the summer of 1985 by a few local people who were interested in hill-walking. At that time the walks were fairly informally organised and people travelled to the walks in cars. Nowadays we are organised into a proper club with a full elected committee. Our members consist of people from all walks of life ranging in age from 20 - 75. We run a 53 seater coach or minibus to all of our walks (which are always covered beforehand by the leaders), we have walks programmes which cover Scotland and northern England and cater for all levels of fitness, and we occasionally go as far afield as Austria for special one-off walking holidays. Monklands Ramblers also has a very active social scene with regular dances, quiz nights and ten-pin bowling outings organised by the committee.
The club has actively and successfully campaigned for rights of way to be maintained and enhanced in the North Lanarkshire area. We have also become very much a part of the local community with frequent acknowledgement of our activities in the local press. The club is extremely successful simply because of the effort and support shown by the members. We consider ourselves a friendly bunch of people who always have a great time irrespective of the unpredictable Scottish weather! We would also be delighted to welcome along any new walkers who may be considering joining us - so come on, contact us today!

The Culbin Story: Part 1 - Sandstorms, the end of the estate
This archive film was made in 1955 - just as the vast task of establishing a forest at Culbin was coming to an end. It tells the story of the people of Culbin being driven from the land by advancing sand and then the mammoth effort by the Forestry Commission to establish the forest we see today.
Films are edited by I. Anderson and narrated by J. Urquhart.
Scotland's Scenery! Walk from the Birks of Aberfeldy to Kenmore
This video is about a club hike in Scotland, UK from Aberfeldy to Kenmore through the 'Birks of Aberfeldy' made famous by scottish poet Robert Burns.
Birks of Aberfeldy. From Wiki:
The Birks of Aberfeldy is a song lyric written for a pre-existing melody in 1787 by Robert Burns. He was inspired to write it by the Falls of Moness and the birch trees of Aberfeldy during a tour of the Scottish Highlands with his friend William Nicol.
With huge thanks to John Convery and Donald Smith for contributing the brilliant group photographs!
