Khiva-Uzbekistan
Though Khiva is about 2500 years old, it acquired its present appearance in the 18th – early 20th centuries. Khiva consists of two urban parts: the inner town Ichan-Kala and the outer town Dishan-Kala. From the very beginning the core of the city –Ichan-Kala, rectangular in plan, was enclosed in fortification walls.
For centuries these walls served ideally the purpose of the town’s defense. But in 1220 they were destroyed by Mongol invaders and in later period gentle slopes of the collapsed walls were used for burying the dead. In 1790 the wall was rebuilt by order of Khiva’s khan Muhammad-Amin-Inak. It was 1200 meters long, 7-8 meters high and about 6 meters thick at the base. Since Khiva stood at an important intersection of the Great Silk Road, there were built four monumental gates directing north, south, east and west. Ark-Darvoza gate located next to Kunya-Ark Citadel let in the caravans from the west. Kosh-Darvoza (‘Double Gate’) with two entrance arches faced south. Tash-Darvoza (‘Stone Gate) was built in the northern part of the city.
The most remarkable is the eastern gate Palvan-Darvoza (‘Hero Warrior’s Gate’), through which ran the road to the Amu Darya River and to the ancient trade town Khazarasp. The survived marble slab above the arch of the gate shows the date the construction was completed: 1221 anno hegirae (1806). Adjoining the gate is the gallery with six domes – a shopping arcade. Soon after the gate had been built, near it there appeared Allakuli-Khan Madrassah, caravanserai and a tim domed trading center. This was also the place where executions used to be carried out. Next to the gate, behind the Ichan-Kala walls, there was the Asian largest slave market. In 1842 a new fortification wall around larger area was built. Supervised by Mahammad Yakub Mekhtar, the construction was completed within 30 days. The wall was 6 kilometers long; it had 10 gates and a lot of turrets. Three out-of-town gardens – Rafanik, Nurullabay and Nurullabek – became part of the town. The larger ring of the town was then called Dishan-Kala (‘Outer Fortress’). Today only separate parts of this unique fortification structure remain. Yet these strong pahsa adobe walls narrowing to the top, are rather impressive. Every 30-50 meters along the length of the wall there are semicircular watching turrets; they seem to support the wall with their abutments. Looking at Khiva’s walls it is hard to believe that outside this well-preserved medieval town is the 21st century.
Khiva from above - Uzbekistan 4K Travel Channel
This morning, we first go to Khoja Islam Minaret, the highest minaret of the town, with a height of 57 m. As a precaution, we take our tripod with the big camera, which together weighs 15 kg. As it quickly shows, it turned out not to be a good decision.
At the foot of the minaret, the climb begins with a narrow wooden staircase about 8 meters high, before we enter the minaret. After that, the staircase doesn't get wider, but the individual stairs get higher.
It is a difficult climb with the equipment. Above we find out that there is no suitable place to set up the tripod. In addition, the windows are barred, so we can use only the small camera anyway.
But we are pleased about the phenomenal panoramic view of the old town of Khiva.
The light brown clay buildings are a constant reminder that this is an oasis town in the 12th largest desert on earth. One spontaneously looks out to see whether not really a caravan of the silk road arrives.
When you look at the many madrasas in the town, you might inevitably think of Angkor Wat and the fall of the Khmer Empire in Cambodia. A major cause of the fall of the Khmer empire was the fact that far too many resources were invested in the temples so that in the occurrence of natural disasters, there were no reserves for the working population.
Here one wonders what would have happened if the Russians had not come and the Soviets had closed almost all the madrasas. Again, in our view, too many resources have been devoted to religion.
The descent from the Khoja Islam Minaret is as arduous as the ascent.
We decide to briefly visit the Music Museum to perhaps buy music from Khiva. The Music Museum shows the traditional musical instruments from the region. In addition, one honors the most famous local musicians from Khiva and show their works.
Once again we visit the Kunya-Ark Citadel and climb the Ayvan, a two-story terrace to enjoy the view from here. From here we have a wonderful view of the mighty city walls.
In the evening we go to the Café Zarafshon. Due to the temperatures, we eat in the open, even if there are nice set tables inside.

To the west from Ark, still before Arab period was built Registan Square, in the ancient days it was public part. From 16-century trade shops Rasta and Taki-Tirgaron were at the entrance to Registan, where armourers sold their production. There were passages Taki-Org-Furushon and Tim in the center of square where headdresses and cotton fabrics were sold. In New Zealand I cycled 3.000km from the northernmost point to the southernmost point. After that I rode a motorbike from Vietnam to Laos and Cambodia. Recently I converted a Rusian 4x4 UAZ Buhanka oldtimer into a campervan and am driving around Central Asia with my puppy dog.

Episode 14 - Uzbekistan - Tashkent, Khiva / 365 days off
UZBEKISTAN: TRENDY TASHKENT AND HISTORICAL KHIVA.
Our arrival in Tashkent was a little bit tense. Daniel did read on the Internet plenty of awful stories about the passport and the custom controls. Fortunately, Magali was here to keep him calm. The result was the most quick and hassle free border crossing we had so far. No one asked us about the pictures and videos we were having in our phones and laptops and about all the medicines we were carrying. If you feel stressed up ike Daniel about these controls, we strongly advise you to take a flight from Almaty (or any airport with a connecting flight). The airport border is way easier to cross than the land border.
Tashkent is a big modern and extremely clean city. There are a few sights to see. Among them, the Chorsu bazar is worth the detour. From mutton kidney to wedding dresses, you can find whatever you need there. And most importantly you will find plenty of Uzbek currency. The government is artificially maintaining an exchange rate of 1$ for 3’000 soms (the local currency). This artificial rate led to a huge black market. The black market rate is 1$ for 6’150 soms. Suddenly your travel will cost you half less. And everybody is using the black market. The money changers do not hide from you. When we asked around, every body told us it is safe.
After two nights in Tashkent, we flew to the other side (West) of the country, namely the city of Khiva. This is where the historical adventure begins. The citadel is composed of a dozen of madrasas, a few minarets, a few mosques all connected with pedestrian paved streets. You really feel either like 200 years ago or on the set of a Sharazad themed movie. Khiva was also the place were the heat hit us the most (with a maximum between 45 and 50 degrees). Only travel warriors (a category we don’t belong to) can visit sights all day long. We chose instead the visit / nap with air conditionning / visit routine.
WE DID SPECIFICALLY ENJOY
The desert castles near Khiva (in the sovereign republic of Karakalpakstan). These ruins are more than 2000 years old and are in the middle of nowhere. A must see in the region.
The old city of Tashkent where you feel being like in a village. Children are playing football in the streets, older people are sitting on chairs watching them. You can also smell food that people are preparing for dinner and believe us, it smells really good.
The drink Kompot everyone is having in this part of Central Asia, which is basically made of boiled fruits in water and sugar, the fruits are then left apart and we only drink the filtered juice. We mainly had cherry and peach flavors, very refreshing!
ACCOMMODATIONS
Tashkent: Jahongir BB Tashkent: A very nice Bed and Breakfast located in the old city.
Khiva: Qosha Darvoza: A nice traditional hotel and among the most friendly staff we met so far. They installed a beamer in their courtyard at midnight so that Magali and a few other Italian tourists could watch the football game.
RESTAURANTS
Tashkent: the shashliks restaurants along the Ourafjon street near the Tinshlik metro stop for a good and inexpensive meal, also the best plov we had so far (mainly at lunch).
Tashkent: the bread bazar in the old city located in the corner of Ourafjon and Farobi streets.
Khiva: the Mirza Boshi and its views of the green dome’s madrassa nearby. We recommend trying the green dill noodles.
BEST KEPT SECRET TIP
Riding rented bicycles in the citadel of Khiva. It was a long time since we enjoyed a place where cars are prohibited.
