ALBA IULIA CITADEL : TRANSYLVANIA ROAD TRIP PART 6 | ROMANIA
Alba Iulia has the largest citadel in Romania. The citadel itself is also known as the Alba Carolina Fortress. We are blessed enough to be able to see and visit it. It is also very rich in history and the most lively fortress that we've seen so far. We were able to watch the performance of the Changing of the Guard Ceremony and were also entertained by a Medieval Fight and Medieval Dance performances. You will only feel excitement by seeing these performances and not to mention, there are a lot of food vendors and small local shops inside the fortress. The architecture of this citadel is truly amazing. Even the design of the fortress when seen from above is shaped like a STAR. We enjoyed visiting this place and we highly recommend it!

2019 Alba Iulia City Street Tour, Romania. Magnificently preserved Citadel.
Alba Iulia’s star-shaped citadel is one of Transylvania’s most overlooked sights. The walls of this magnificently preserved citadel – the largest in Romania – enclose grand monuments and museums, glittering churches, and archaeological treasures. Over recent years, these attractions have been thoroughly rejuvenated and sprinkled with plenty of multilingual information. Alba Iulia is place where the agreement was signed to unify Transylvania with Romania.

Alba Iulia Fortress | Cetatea Alba Iulia | Alba Carolina Citadel Travel 369
Thanks to everyone for watching! :) The Alba Carolina Citadel is the largest citadel in Romania, and it was built between 1715 and 1738 in Alba Iulia, at the center of Romania. The site on which it was built was previously home to another two fortifications, the Roman Castle of Legio XIII Gemina, and the Bălgrad Medieval Citadel.
The medieval fortress was part of a fortification system created by Prince Eugene of Savoy designed to ensure the defenses of the newly conquered provinces of the Habsburg Empire. It is one of the most representative Vauban bastion fortification in Transylvania, and it became one of the Roman Empire's main fortifications in the area.
The foundations for the city and citadel were laid out in 1711, and between 1713 and 1715 the whole land was cleared by tearing down the old city, which was moved on the Eastern side of the Fortress, and by building around the Roman castrum. Over 20,000 Romanian peasants worked on the construction of the Citadel, as well as several Italian workers and artisans. The main body of the citadel has a heptagonal shape, with a bastion being located in each corner, and the outside walls having a length of approximately 12 km. The Citadel also has a gate on each wall, but the main gate is on the Eastern side.
Today, the Alba Carolina Fortress became one of the main attractions of the Alba Iulia county, by providing a unique historical and medieval ambiance. It is very accessible from Cluj-Napoca, and you can explore it through different tours and day trips. An important feature that attracts thousands of tourists each year is the Guard Change of the Citadel. The guards are dressed in uniforms specific to the XVIII century, and they welcome the tourists at the gates of the Citadel. This ceremony began in 2009, and throughout the years it became a symbol of the Alba Carolina Citadel. The Guard Change Ceremony takes place daily during the touristic season (May - September) at 12:00, and sometimes twice a day during weekends. For a unique memory, tourists can take photos with the guards, who are dressed according to their category: infantry, cavalry, artillery, or commanders.
Alba Iulia | Romania's BEST Kept Secret
Alba Iulia, is one of Romania’s best kept secrets. I’ve never seen Alba Iulia show on anyone’s Top 10 List of Places to Visit in Romania, and had no idea what to expect when we decided to visit. To say we were pleasantly surprised is an understatement. Alba Iulia has an amazing and beautiful historic fortified city center in the shape of a star. Having once been settled by the Romans it hosts an impressive collection of Roman ruins and artifacts. I would most definitely encourage anyone traveling to Romania to put Alba Iulia on your list of places to visit.

My Visit to Alba Iulia, Romania
A video I made during my visit to the lovely city of Alba Iulia in Romania.
One of the oldest settlements in Romania, the highlight of Alba Iulia is the fortress that encompasses the entirety of the city center.
The city itself is quite small and you'll need a few hours to thoroughly explore the fortress and surrounding urban areas.

Cetatea Alba Carolina din Alba Iulia - 100 ani de la Marea Unire || Incredible Romania [4K]
In Alba Iulia it's easy to come but hard to leave :) It's 340 km away from Bucharest, under 100 km from Cluj - Napoca and Tîrgu Mureș International Airports and under 70 km from Sibiu International Airport. So it's well connected in order for any tourist to get here easily.
If you come to Alba Iulia, of course that the most important tourist attraction is Alba Carolina citadel. It's shaped like a heptagon, the seven bastions offering a star like look. A similar citadel can be found in Arad but this one is still used as a military base.

The Alba Carolina Fortress was built between 1715-1738 by order of Charles VI, emperor of the Habsburg Empire, acting as capital of Transylvania after the Austrian occupation (1711). The fortress (110 hectares, the largest in Romania), built in the Vauban military system, includes the medieval fortress Balgrad and ruins of Roman castrum, Apulum. Our walk, taken at dusk and at night, along the famous Route of Gates' crossing the city, reach several objectives: Gate I, Gate II, Obelisk Horia, Closca and Crisan, Gate III, old bakery, Roman ruins of Apulum castrum, the building Jericho, Custozza Monument, the building with the Union Hall (former casino), the University 1 December 1918 (the former Apor Palace), the Babilon Building – housing the National Museum of Unification, Princely Palace, the equestrian statue of Michael the Brave, the Roman-Catholic Cathedral St. Michael, the Roman Catholic Bishop's Palace, Gate IV, Gate V, Gate VI and the Romanian Orthodox Arhiepiescopate with the Cathedral of Reunification. In the Fortress Square we witnessed a major folk festival.
