24 hours in Brasov, Romania
Often before we visit somewhere we have a general idea of what we're planning on doing when arriving; however, while heading to Brasov for the 1st time we had no clue. Our 24 hours spent in the city allowed us to cover most of the Old Town, do a bit of hiking and tuck into some delicious food before heading out for nightlife. With such time scarcity we tried to pack in as much as we possibly could. The following are some of the places we had a chance to visit in Brasov, Transylvania (Transilvania):

24 hours in Brasov, Romania Travel Video Transcript:
So welcome to Brasov. We have finally arrived at our destination. It was a really pleasant train ride. I actually slept for most of it because the motion just puts me to sleep like a baby. But Sam did film some of the scenery and it was really pretty. The fall colors are starting to change. So yeah, now we're in the town. We're going to check it out. We're actually feeling a little bit hungry so I think lunch will be the first order of business and then we'll start exploring.
So last time I attempted riding a pennyfarthing we were in Germany early this summer and I was not very successful. I think these are more for decoration and it is actually attached to the bike-rack so you can just leave your bike and stack it there.
So ready for lunch? You better believe it. And we thought we were going to a local Romanian restaurant but it turns out it is Hungarian. I suppose it is close enough they share a border together.
And the bread has arrived. Oh, that is a nice loaf. It looks homemade. It looks nice and homemade. Look at how thick that is.
Take a bite for us. Woah. This is going to be nice with my soup. Mmmm, it's nice. Crispy on the outside and really soft on the inside.
It just needs some butter now.
So my soup has arrived and I'm very excited. It is a Hen's soup with vegetables. And it has huge semolina dumplings. Show us how big? Bigger than my spoon. Look at that.
Wow, let's get a close-up shot of that. Yeah, and it is nice and hot. It is steaming so let's try it.
Mmmmm.
It's almost like a bread dumpling. Or like Polenta. It's good.
So we've had our lunch and now we are checking out the town. This is actually one of those trips that we didn't plan too well. We just decided to come to Brasov spur of the moment. So we don't really know what the main attractions are which means this afternoon we're just going to be walking around and figuring it out as we go.
We've been walking around Brasov for a few hours what are your first impressions so far? Well, already I can tell you I like it a lot more than Bucharest. It definitely has more of a medieval feel here and it is more well preserved as well. You can walk around and there is lots of cool architecture and buildings and great restaurants and pubs to drop in to. Yeah, it is very colorful and lots of renovations happening. Exactly.
So where are we now? We are visiting the narrowest street in Brasov. And we've seen pictures of people jumping and touching both sides of the walls. So we're going to try to both attempt that.
So at its narrowest this is 1.3 meters so let's keep walking towards the most narrow part.
And I think this is probably it.
Something I've really been enjoying about this city so far are all of these little side streets and alleys. It's really easy to escape the busy sections of the city.
Alright guys, so this is Brasov on a Thursday night. It's looking a little bit quiet and I'm not seeing a lot of people but I'm sure there has to be a neighborhood where the pubs are open and people are hanging out. So let's go find one.
So that's a wrap from Brasov. We had a really good time here. It reminded us of a place we had visited in Europe and it took us all day to figure it out. That place is Tallinn, Estonia. Anyways, we had a really good time and tomorrow we're off to Bran Castle. To find Dracula!

ALBA IULIA CITADEL : TRANSYLVANIA ROAD TRIP PART 6 | ROMANIA
Alba Iulia has the largest citadel in Romania. The citadel itself is also known as the Alba Carolina Fortress. We are blessed enough to be able to see and visit it. It is also very rich in history and the most lively fortress that we've seen so far. We were able to watch the performance of the Changing of the Guard Ceremony and were also entertained by a Medieval Fight and Medieval Dance performances. You will only feel excitement by seeing these performances and not to mention, there are a lot of food vendors and small local shops inside the fortress. The architecture of this citadel is truly amazing. Even the design of the fortress when seen from above is shaped like a STAR. We enjoyed visiting this place and we highly recommend it!

Cetatea RUPEA Fortress (Transylvania, Romania)
Enable English subtitle !
The fortress is located on the top of the basalt hill that dominates the town of Rupea located in the south-eastern part of Transylvania, between Brasov and Sighisoara. The fortress was built, extended in several stages and inhabited by the Saxon settlers during the 14th-19th centuries. It is not known exactly when the construction began, but its first mention date back to 1324 when, during the formation of the Saxon seats, the Saxons here rebelled against the voivode of Trasilvania and the King of Hungary. The first fortress, called Upper Fortress (enclosure 1), was built on the top of the hill in the 14th century, and it now we can recognize the Powder Tower (gate tower), the Throne Chamber (the seat of the Rupea Seat), some old houses and a lodge on the top. In the 15th century the fortress was extended downwards around, with a wall representing the first stage of the Middle Fortress (enclosure 2). Within it, the Pentagonal, of Scribes (gate tower) and Capos towers are preserved or recognized. In the 17th century, the Middle Fortress is extended to the west with a courtyard (enclosure 3), in which the towers of Ugra (near the gate), of the Scouts, as well as a chapel are located. In the 18th-19th centuries the fortress extends only northwards with a new wall separating the Dawn Fortress (enclosure 4). Within it, you can now visit the new gate tower, the Servants Tower, the Bacon Tower, the Fountain, the military repository, the Gate Tower. It is worth noting that this fortress has never been besieged. It is not a peasant fortress as wrongly it was affirmed, but a fortified burg, with living quarters, the seat of the administration of the Rupea Seat and of the King's Empowerment. The glory of the fortress was in the 17th century when it had about 100 houses and more public and administrative buildings. The fortress began to be abandoned since the second half of the 18th century, the people descending to the valley, the security being provided by the Habsburg army. In the years 2010-2013 the fortress was partly renovated for tourism purposes.

Churches in Medeival Romania were fortefied to protect against the Ottoman Turks who kept invading. This church was constructed in the 1300's in the village of modern day Cincu, Romania. Cincu was called Catun when it was occupied by the Romans, a thousand years earlier. In 1523 the village was destroyed by fire and in 1600 Romanian troops lead by Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave), reconquered the village from the Turks. Alba Iulia Fortress | Cetatea Alba Iulia | Alba Carolina Citadel Travel 369
Thanks to everyone for watching! :) The Alba Carolina Citadel is the largest citadel in Romania, and it was built between 1715 and 1738 in Alba Iulia, at the center of Romania. The site on which it was built was previously home to another two fortifications, the Roman Castle of Legio XIII Gemina, and the Bălgrad Medieval Citadel.
The medieval fortress was part of a fortification system created by Prince Eugene of Savoy designed to ensure the defenses of the newly conquered provinces of the Habsburg Empire. It is one of the most representative Vauban bastion fortification in Transylvania, and it became one of the Roman Empire's main fortifications in the area.
The foundations for the city and citadel were laid out in 1711, and between 1713 and 1715 the whole land was cleared by tearing down the old city, which was moved on the Eastern side of the Fortress, and by building around the Roman castrum. Over 20,000 Romanian peasants worked on the construction of the Citadel, as well as several Italian workers and artisans. The main body of the citadel has a heptagonal shape, with a bastion being located in each corner, and the outside walls having a length of approximately 12 km. The Citadel also has a gate on each wall, but the main gate is on the Eastern side.
Today, the Alba Carolina Fortress became one of the main attractions of the Alba Iulia county, by providing a unique historical and medieval ambiance. It is very accessible from Cluj-Napoca, and you can explore it through different tours and day trips. An important feature that attracts thousands of tourists each year is the Guard Change of the Citadel. The guards are dressed in uniforms specific to the XVIII century, and they welcome the tourists at the gates of the Citadel. This ceremony began in 2009, and throughout the years it became a symbol of the Alba Carolina Citadel. The Guard Change Ceremony takes place daily during the touristic season (May - September) at 12:00, and sometimes twice a day during weekends. For a unique memory, tourists can take photos with the guards, who are dressed according to their category: infantry, cavalry, artillery, or commanders.
Trip To Romania - Casa Vlad Dracul, Praid Salt Mine and The Gate Tower
Vlad Dracul House of Sighișoara is located in Tin Street No.1, between the Citadel square and the Clock Tower. It's the place where Vlad the Impaler, the historical character who inspired the Bram Stoker's Dracula, is supposed to be born, in 1431.
The Praid mine is a large salt mine located in central Romania in Harghita County, close to Praid. Praid represents one of the largest salt reserves in Romania having estimated reserves of 50 billion tonnes of NaCl.
The tower began to be built at the end of the 13th century, It was built in the 14th century as a simple gate tower with a maximum of two levels: the ground floor and first two floors of the tower were made of sandstone and river rock, the first stage of the tower construction probably had a form identical to the Tailors tower.

ALBA IULIA FORTRESS ROMANIA
Cetatea FAGARAS Fortress (Transylvania, Romania)
Enable ENGLISH subtitle ! - Activați subtitrarea în românește !
Fagaras Fortress is located in the town of Fagaras in Transylvania, in the central part of Romania. Built in 1310 on the site of a former 12th century wooden fortress, Fagaras was enlarged between the 15th and 17th centuries and was considered one of the strongest fortifications in Transylvania. The fortress was surrounded by a deep moat which could easily be filled with water. The fortress boasts three floors, five towers and four bastions. Fagaras Fortress functioned mainly as a residence for various princes and their families. Transylvanian Prince Gabriel Bethlen (1613-1629), strongly influenced by the Italian Renaissance, rebuilt the fortress, bestowing elegance and beauty to the construction. During the rule of Georg Rákóczi (1630-1649), the castle's fortifications were doubled and the moat was enlarged. Ráckózi had the bastions bridged and covered, the moat paved with stones, the bridge and the casemates repaired and a guardhouse built. The entry of Făgăraş Fortress in the property of the Habsburg Empire in 1696 and its transformation into a military garrison was the beginning of a period of decline. Serving military purposes, the castle and fortress of Făgăraş lost their former elegance and splendor. Between 1918 and 1948, the fortress was a Romanian army garrison. From 1918 to 1924, it served as a place of refuge for White Russians who fled the Bolsheviks. Also, after the fall of Poland in 1939, a large number of Poles found refuge in the fortress. Between 1948 and 1960, the fortress was transformed into a communist political prison until 1960 when it was turned into a museum. Fagaras Fortress houses the Museum of Fagaras Country having mixed profile (history, ethnography, art). It includes 20 collections, exhibition of Fagaras representing the evolution of civilization in a string of moments and significant events. Remember by the famous exhibit The Iron Maiden. In recent years, the fortress has been extensively restored, strengthened and equipped with museum inventory, essential being the restoring of the Great Hall of the Throne.

Axente Sever - The fortified church, Sibiu, Romania
In Axente Sever in 14th century began the construction of a Gothic hall-church, consisting of hall, four quarters tower and choir. The massiveness of the tower between the choir and the hall leads to the conclusion that it is the oldest part of the building. A similar composition of the base we can find in Agârbiciu and Ţapu. The thickness of the wall of the tower's floor is 1.60 m being pierced by the east and west by an arc ogive.
Around the year 1490 the church is rebuilt for defense. On the east and west of the four quarters tower there were built defense floors. The counterforts of the western front are strengthened, and there was built a defense bridge for bows and battlements for pitch. The tower ends with a wooden defense bridge. The choir is also uplifted with two floors, which are equipped with battlements for rifles. Western entrance closes with a sliding grid with spikes, whose guides are still visible nowadays. The church was surrounded with a wall of defense with guard road and barns, so that in case of siege locals can shelter their families and wealth into the fortress.
HALLOWEEN SPECIAL | Overnight at DRACULA'S CASTLE | Poenari Castle, Transylvania (2018)
I explored and camped at Poenari Castle, the REAL Dracula Castle. Many people believe Bran Castle is Dracula's Castle, but there is no evidence to suggest that he ever lived there. Vlad the Impaler did restore and live in Poenari Castle, making it the REAL Dracula Castle, along with a few ghost stories. Read more:
To celebrate Halloween, I spent the night camping at Dracula's Castle. There will be ghost stories, paranormal investigations, Halloween candy tasting, and Jarrad might just get attacked by a stray animal (LOL!). Stay Spooky!
