Tirana, Albania - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Tirana
Top best places to visit in Tirana, Albania
Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania.
Tirana, the center of the political, economical, and cultural life, was dubbed the City of Kiosks” for the many small-scale shops and outdoor cafes always full of people.
The Skanderbeg Square is the central and the largest square of the city, named after Albanian hero whose statue stands in the middle.
The Square features great buildings, such as:
The National Historic Museum, the main museum in Tirana
The Opera and Ballet Theater, and the Et'hem Bey Mosque, one of the most impressive mosques in the country.
West of Skanderbeg Square is the brand new Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, featuring rich interior iconography.
South of Skanderbeg Square extends panoramic boulevard with several government buildings and cultural institutions.
In the vicinity of the boulevard, on the recently opened pedestrian street, are located:
The National Theater, the main theater in Albania.
A 6-meter remnant from the Ottoman-era, the Tirana Castle Walls.
And an exhibition hall hosting Albanian and socialist art, the National Art Gallery.
Across the boulevard is the Rinia Park and the Taiwan Complex, popular spot among Albanian celebrities.
And going more to the south is the Lana River, the city’s main stream.
On the other side of the river along the boulevard are situated:
More municipal and national government buildings.
The Pyramid, originally a museum, today a derelict structure untouched for years.
A cold war installation, the Postbllok, a checkpoint featuring concrete pillars from prison camp and an original bunker.
The Former Residence of Enver Hoxha, the communist leader of Albania.
The Palace of Congresses, a venue where numerous festivals and events are held.
And the Mother Teresa Square.
The square is surrounded by:
the Archaeological Museum, the University of Tirana and the Academy of Arts.
Behind this square starts the Grand Park, a popular green area perfect to walk around and enjoy an artificial lake.
The Statue of Mother Albania stands not far away from the park, in the Martyrs' Cemetery. From there is a beautiful view of the city.
Go to the top floor of the Sky Tower for an even better view of the downtown of Tirana.

Tirana in 4K
Tirana, the capital city of Albania, was also a destination of Cities in 4K. Feel free to join us on this journey exploring another interesting metropolis on the Balkan.
Enjoy and please share!
This beautiful city is not just the capital city of Albania for about last 100 years, it is also the largest city of the country. All important developments, like economic, political and cultural character are happening here. Tirana has also a very educational character, a lot of public and private schools, university and colleges are located in this area.
Almost third of the whole population in Albania lives in Tirana and surroundings. No matter what you visit or explore in Tirana the kindness and affability of the domestic people will meet you. What could you ask more in a foreign city or land?!
As a city with a far history there are a lot of spots which should be visited. Some of them you will recognize in the video, like: view from the Dajti mountain from where you have an amazing view on the whole city and the four artificial lakes (can be reached with the cable car), the Skanderbeg Square with statue and flag, Et´hem Bey Mosque, National Historical Museum, National Art Gallery, Rinia Park, TID Tower, Orthodox Church of the Holy Evangelist Prokop, the former grave of Enver Hoxha, City Park Parku i Madh, Rruga Murat Toptani.

Tirana Albania ???????? BunkArt 1 - Part 1
BunkArt 1
_________
After the inaguration, in June 1978 by the dictator Enver Hoxha, opened to the public the anti-nuclear bunker built by the communist government. A 5 floor palace underground, with 106 rooms and an assembly hall, now turned into an historical and art center called BUNK'ART. The passageways, the areas provided for the meetings of the General Staff of the Army in case of war, the rooms where was thought would sleep the communist exdictator Enver Hoxha and the former Prime Minister Mehmet Shehu in case of a nuclear attack, the gigantic hall dedicated to the meetings of the political Bureau which contains also an albanian tipical Buffe are transformed into a video museum exhibition and into art. Starting from April 2016, BUNK'ART is now made permanent, turning into a unique attraction site for tourists in the region, showing the Albanian life during the 45 years of communism.

Albania: Bunk'Art 1 @ Tirana
Bunk'Art in Tirana, Albania
Bunk'Art in Tirana, Albania
This fantastic conversion – from a massive cold war bunker on the outskirts of Tirana into a history and contemporary art museum – is Albania's most exciting new sight and easily a Tirana highlight. With almost 3000 sq metres of space underground spread over several floors, the bunker was built for Albania's political elite in the 1970s and remained a secret for much of its existence. Now it hosts exhibits that combine the modern history of Albania with pieces of contemporary art.
Just arriving at the bunker is quite an exciting experience, as you go though a long, dark tunnel in the hillside that leads you to the entrance on the side of a still-active Albanian military base. Once you're inside the bunker itself, you can wander through the furnished rooms intended for the communist elite as they faced the invasion that so terrified them. Elsewhere you'll find a very detailed history of modern Albania, beginning with the 1939 Italian invasion and ending with the overthrow of communism. The display arguably brushes over the true horrors of Hoxha's Stalinist regime, while at least recognising them, and there are some fascinating documents and photographs, including a video of Enver Hoxha's 1985 state funeral. Other highlights include the enormous Assembly Hall, the main social centre of the bunker, as well as the private chambers of other senior officials. Bunk'Art is an incredible place and promises to grow with the opening of further rooms and addition of more displays in the near future.
To get here from the centre of Tirana take a bus bound for Linza from outside the Palace of Culture on Sheshi Skënderbej, and ask the driver to let you out at Bunk'Art. It's located right next to the Dajti Express, so it makes sense to combine the two outings.

WANDERING + WORKING IN TIRANA | ALBANIA
While in Tirana, Nate + I wandered the jagged streets and watched the city go by. On our very first day, after busing in from Montenegro, searching for our hostel, downing a massive dinner and a liter of celebratory wine ('we made it!'), we stumbled upon a pop-up carnival that was either in the act of being built or broken down...it was hard to tell. We followed a group of similarly silly kids onto a spinning sleigh ride of a Americana-attired giant woman who's skirt whirled and shook us into oblivion. It was a perfect introduction to the capitol of Albania - a bit unnerving and potentially nauseating but amazingly diverting in the process! :)
The music in this video is by Orges & the Ockus Rockus Band. There was a huge party event at the bar we were working at and this exuberant Albanian band performed a few hours of rollicking music. This song seemed perfect for our current travelling lifestyle - check out their video here:
Travel Plan Boat in the City live at Desound (Tirana, Albania)
Boat in the city
Hanging around the city, I see people becoming smaller
My hand is not guilty, the right side of a shammer
It's not like a reentry, but the smile of the sun
Relaxing hours...(oh) so easy, We've forgot to have some fun
Relaxing hours pass so easy
Relaxing hours pass so easy
Penetrating the city, Moving up with our boat
Which crashes around with shitty, Drinking them without a throat
It smells like a frozen meat, That the bear wants to eat
I am hungry, I am sick; And I'll never let you sleep
how should I show the best of me
When my lust is sick and eats like a pig
Just you from the crowd could tell me an I
Speed up your hurry, the boat is on flood
Relaxing hours pass so easy
Relaxing hours pass so easy
ALBANIA'S TOP TOURIST ATTRACTION: The ANCIENT FORT of GJIROKASTER ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit Albania and let's go to Gjirokastra's eerie hilltop castle is one of the biggest in the Balkans. There's been a fortress here since the 12th century, although much of what can be seen today dates to the early 19th century. The castle remains somewhat infamous due to its use as a prison under the communists. Inside there's a collection of armoury, two good museums, plenty of crumbling ruins to scramble around, and superb views over the valley.
Albania, on Southeastern Europe’s Balkan Peninsula, is a small country with Adriatic and Ionian coastlines and an interior crossed by the Albanian Alps. The country has many castles and archaeological sites. Capital Tirana centers on sprawling Skanderbeg Square, site of the National History Museum, with exhibits spanning antiquity to post-communism, and frescoed Et’hem Bey Mosque.

Living in Tirana, Albania
Join SHABL aka Subscribe -
A slice of life living in Tirana, Albania. This is my last day unfortunately and go about the business that people usually do before the leave somewhere cool and affordable. Stock up on stuff, eat lots of good food and further explore the area. Tirana has a bad rep like most of Albania and from what I experienced, it's totally unwarranted. I had a fantastic time trying a bit of living in Tirana and living in Albania in general.
I say living in as opposed to visiting because I didn't really do much touristy stuff compared to just go about my day to day life while I was there. Tirana and Albania in general are places I'd like to return to one day during the summer to get another taste; cool spot.

A traveler's guide to Tirana
About Tirana
Inhabited since the Paleolithic era, Tirana has a long history that has included communities started by the Illyrians (who coined the name Tërana, which eventually became Tirana), Romans, Byzantines, and the Ottomans. Proclaimed the temporary capital of the newly independent capital of the country of Albania in 1920, it was deemed to be the permanent capital in 1925, which served to accelerate its growth. Falling under the Soviet sphere of influence following the outcome of the Second World War, its architecture mirrored the Brutalist style of building found elsewhere throughout the rest of Russia and Eastern Europe. Since then though, renovation efforts and new construction since the end of Communism in the 1990's has freshened things up, and its young population has lifted the spirits of this place in recent years. The nightlife scene is hot, cafes are full following the conclusion of the work day, and rising economic prosperity has given rise to a sense of optimism everywhere you go. Combined with significantly lower prices compared with their Italian neighbors across the Adriatic, and you have an excellent urban escape that will get your Albanian trip off to the right start.
Places to visit
Start your tour of Tirana in Skanderbeg Square. A popular public gathering place for residents, its centrepiece is a monument to Albania's greatest hero, and with numerous restaurants and cafes ringing its periphery, it is also a great place to watch people stroll by. Et'hem Bey Mosque should be next on your list, as its long history that dates back to the 19th century, as well as its central role in helping the people defy Communist authorities in the early 1990's, when 10,000 worshipers streamed into the prayer hall after having been shut down by the totalitarian government for almost 50 years. The Islamic art inside is magnificent, but be sure to dress respectfully. The National Historical Museum will help visitors understand the challenges the country face during Communist times, as well as how life was during the days of Ottomans, Byzantines, Romans, and in earlier eras. Additionally, there is also a pavilion that profiles the life and times of Mother Teresa, who was born and raised in Albania. Finally, cruise through the National Art Gallery of Albania, as it contains visual art from nationally famous creatives, which includes Socialist Realism paintings from this nation's Communist days.
Things to do
Those looking for a break from the city, and a great vantage point from which to photograph Tirana from above will want to ascend Mount Dajti. Serviced by a cable car, visitors can go hiking, horse riding, and skiing in the winter. More urbane-minded travelers will want to have fun at the Taiwan Complex instead. An entertainment centre located in a park in downtown Tirana, it is home to restaurants, bars, a casino, a bowling alley, and many other attractions. If the sun is shining, it is a wonderful place to be. Those looking to chill or seek out a great dinner will enjoy having a coffee or a meal on Murat Toptani Street. A pedestrian only street in the car dominated core, the relaxing atmosphere has given rise to some of this city's trendiest spots, so be sure to walk through here first when looking for a place to eat. Once the sun sets, don't forget to sample the nightlife in Tirana. Radio Bar is a good spot to start the night, as its quieter yet hip atmosphere makes it easy to meet locals, who tend to be university students at this venue. When the time comes to rock out for the rest of the night, Alfa Bar is an awesome place to go, as it stays open late, and often host great local bands.
