Russia: Residents of world’s coldest city show how to keep cool in heatwave

The Siberian city of Yakutsk is currently enjoying an unusual heat wave, with meteorologists forecasting temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius to continue for the next few days.
As temperatures soar in the city known as the coldest in the world, the locals head to the Buluus glacier to cool down, as shown by as soon by footage filmed on Thursday.
The glacier lies in a deep valley some 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Yakutsk surrounded by pristine pine forests and lush green meadows. The unusual ‘glacier beach’ is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike during Yakutia’s short summer.
“I am so amazed at how it's possible, when the ice and hot weather exist together, how the ice does not melt. It is so cool!” said local citizen Anna Ivanova, who was visiting the icy beach for the first time.
“This is so cool! Why? Because I will see something that I have never seen before in my whole life. It's a first time experience,” said another visitor, a 10-year-old student from Hong Kong.
The glacier covers an area of around 10 square kilometres, and thanks to several meters of permafrost underneath the ice, it doesn’t melt even during unusually hot weather.

REAL Woolly MAMMOTH sighting footage caught on tape! (Yakutsk city, Sakha Republic, Siberia 1943)
REAL Woolly MAMMOTH sighting footage caught on tape! (Yakutsk city, Sakha Republic, Siberia 1943)
After the conclusion of the WW2 Battle of Stalingrad, Nazi Party member and official photographer for the NSDAP, Holger Hildebrand, was captured by the Red Army at the Battle of Stalingrad. He and thousands of other Wehrmacht soldiers were later sent on a death march towards Siberia; this mammoth footage is understood to have been taken during that journey. (Hildebrand is believed to have died a prisoner of war at a Soviet forced labor camp in late 1945. His Granddaughter later came into possession of the footage when his belongings were repatriated to Germany from Russia decades after his death.)
The magnificent music -- called Hero Down -- once again comes from the very talented Kevin MacLeod of Incompetech:
Here's an astonishing article discussing the recent finding of a Woolly Mammoth (with blood still intact and in liquid form!). Maybe the creature did not die as long ago as they presume:

Living in the Coldest Place on Earth Siberia
Eyelashes freeze, frostbite is a constant danger and cars are usually kept running even when not being used, lest their batteries die in temperatures that average minus-58 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter, according to news reports.
This is Oymyakon, a settlement of some 500 people in Russia’s Yakutia region, that has earned the reputation as the coldest permanently occupied human settlement in the world.Oymyakon, Siberia (-96.16 Fahrenheit/-71.2 Celsius) Oymyakon, in Siberia, holds the record for being the coldest permanently inhabited place on earth. The village, which sits 217 miles (350 km) below the Arctic Circle, is home to more than 210,000 people, despite its ground being in a constant state of permafrost.
This BBC documentary goes over the everyday life of these people that live in Siberia.
RUSSIA: MOSCOW: ANNUAL ICE BATHING
Russian/Nat
The Soviet Union has disintegrated and the Russian Empire came and went -- but there's one tradition in Russia that continues to endure.
Every winter, hundreds of Russian bathers break the ice to take a dip in the Moskva river.
These bathers, otherwise referred to as walruses, swear by their annual ice-bathing, claiming it saves thousands of roubles in doctor's fees.
Fifteen below zero on the thermometer and six inches of snowfall overnight -- perfect weather for a refreshing dip in the Moskva river.
While Russia's new class of wealthy have fled the Russian winter for the shores of Thailand and Southern Turkey some Muscovites prefer a dip closer to home.
Dubbed the walruses, these Muscovites gather throughout the winter months to test their mettle against the elements.
Veterans reckon a regular plunge saves thousands of roubles on doctor's fees.
Some claim even greater benefits.
Committed ice-bathers believe a quick dip followed by a couple of shots of vodka rewards the serious adherent with spiritual and even aphrodisiac properties.

It means health and certainty in the future. I recommend ice-swimming to all women!

Ice bathing is no passing fad -- Russians have been doing it for
centuries.

And, as veterans are quick to point out, it's a lot cheaper than exercise bikes, aromatherapy and magic crystals.

People power: Passengers push 'frozen' plane in Siberia

Passengers due to take a flight in Siberia had to get out and push the aircraft after its brake pads froze solid. The plane was trying to take off from the Russian town of Igarka, but was unable to move after the temperature fell to -52C, the RIA Novosti news agency reports. Passengers on board the flight, many of them shift workers, apparently offered to lend a hand, fearing that otherwise their journey home would be delayed, The Siberian Times reports.
The Katekavia airline flight later took off and landed safely in the city of Krasnoyarsk.
Steve Rosenberg reports.

15 Minutes Outside Means Frozen Eyelashes In Siberia
The Northeast may be feeling as cold as Siberia lately, but in the actual Russian region, below-zero temperatures are causing people's eyelashes to freeze. Anastasia Gruzdeva, who lives in a city east of Siberia called Yakutsk, posted a frozen selfie with her friends on instagram. Temperatures in Siberia have plummeted to minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit this month. Gruzdeva said that she didn't use any makeup to make the eyelash icicles happen, she says all it took was 15 to 20 minutes on the street.

Photographer Travels To The Coldest Village On Earth Where The Temperature Can Reach -71.2C (-96F)
by Lina D.
If you think that winter has already come to your city, pictures from Oymyakon, Russia, the coldest village on Earth, might change your mind. With the lowest temperature of −71.2 °C (−96 °F), recorded in 1924, and the average for January being -50°C (-60°F), this village is the coldest permanently inhabited place on this planet. New Zealand-based photographer Amos Chapple decided to go on a two-day journey from Yakutsk, the coldest major city on Earth, to capture what everyday life is like in Oymyakon.
“I was wearing thin trousers when I first stepped outside into – 47 °C (-52°F). I remember feeling like the cold was physically gripping my legs, the other surprise was that occasionally my saliva would freeze into needles that would prick my lips”, the photographer told to weather.com.
The photographer recalls that the hardest thing was not the cold itself, but that his camera’s focus and zoom rings would occasionally freeze in place.
