Travel Portugal - Vila Vicosa, Arraiolos
Vila Vicosa and Arraiolos are small towns that capture the feeling of rural Portugal.
White-washed Vila Vicosa offers serene churches, quiet streets and an imposing ducal palace in the Mannerist style. A well-preserved medieval castle overlooks the town, and contains a agricultural museum.
In Arraiolos the central castle is little more than a ring of stone walls, though still very pretty, and fun to explore. A single church occupies the center of this ancient fortress.
The town is quaint, with winding streets and typical blue & white colors.
These towns make good stops, for a few hours, if you're traveling in the region.
And if you're interested in horses, please see Spain, Portugal 4 LUSITANOS. This video about dressage lessons was taken in Arraiolos.

IGREJA MATRIZ DE CORTEGAÇA 4K - PORTUGAL SUITS YOU WELL
The present temple was erected on the initiative of Father Manuel Pereira, abbot from 1901 to 1918. The works were initiated on April 18 , 1910 , with a project by Manuel Soares de Almeida.
The implantation of the Portuguese Republic (October 1910) frustrated the obtaining of the resources requested to the Monarchy by the Municipal Council, and the death of Father Manuel Pereira ( 1916 ) was also recorded during the works. Nevertheless, the effort of the community managed to reach the completion of the temple, inaugurated solemnly by the new abbot, Father José Maria Francisco dos Santos, on August 18 , 1918 .
The facade of the temple was lined with tiles from 1921 to 1923 .
Over the decades, it has been the object of improvements, among which the gilding of the altars and, in Father Joaquim dos Santos Cunha's (1943-1969), the increase of two altars, one with the image of Our Lady of Fatima, offered by Alfredo Rola ( 1953 ), and another with that of Our Lady of the Assumption, offered by Jovelino Costa ( 1959 ). In 1956 a new baptistery was built, with a panel of tiles depicting the baptism of Christ , offered by João Violas. At the same time two panels of tiles were applied in the main chapel , one representing the Supper of the Lord, offered by Joaquim Rola, and the other the Miraculous Fishing, offered by Jovelino and Norberto Costa. The same abbot had an altar versus populum constructed .
Under the abbot Manuel Dias, the whole exterior of the temple was tiled.
The temple underwent conservation and restoration intervention, being reopened to the public, with the presence of the bishop of Porto , on May 9 , 1993 . The roof frame and the vault of the main chapel and the main stucco nave were replaced by reinforced concrete.
It is classified as Property of Public Interest , along with the deposits of the Old Cemetery, next to the church. The latter were executed between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century and are characterized by the use of a revivalist vocabulary, namely by the sculptural work of their masonry , by wrought iron railing and also by the use of the coating tiling, configuring a set of great homogeneity.
The temple features the main façade flanked by towers topped by coruchu . The central cloth is marked by the opening of the portal of straight dorsal, which connects to an upper window , with balustrade , surmounted by a broad triangular pediment, crowned by three sculptures - to the center Santa Marinha, patron of the temple, with São Miguel on the right and São Martinho on the left. This whole elevation is covered by blue and white tiles, with decorative and architectural motifs that balance and frame the existing spans. The figurative representations in these tiles are those of St. Peter and St. Paul, St. John Bosco, St. Francis of Assisi, the Heart of Jesus and the Heart of Mary. The tile coating of the exterior of the church inscribes this temple in the tendency that, since the nineteenth century , manifested itself in a particular way in the region of Ovar, where much of the facades of the properties were covered with tiles.
In the interior, the high altar came from Sanguedo and the altarpiece displays a panel with Risen Christ (Alvaro Rodrigues da Silva's offer), and in peanhas, one on each side, the images of Santa Marinha and São Miguel.
In the transept, on the right, is the altar of Our Lady of Lourdes and, on the left, that of Our Lady of the Rosary. In lateral chapels, on the north side, the altar of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and, on the south side, that of Senhor do Bonfim. Next, in the body of the church, the altars of Saint Anthony, on the side of the Gospel, and of Saint Sebastian, on the side of the Epistle.
The ceiling of the main chapel had paintings of the apostles , of unknown author. On the side of the Epistle, Paul, James, Andrew and Bartholomew. On the side of the Gospel, Peter, Simon, Philip and Thomas. The figures of Thaddaeus and Matias were absent. In the intervention of the beginning of the decade of 1990 , the four Evangelists (ceiling of the main chapel) and the remaining ten apostles (ceiling of the main ship) were represented.

Arraiolos Castle aerial view 1440P
Arraiolos Castle is located in the Village of Arraiolos in Alentejo, Portugal.
It is also known as Paço dos Alcaides.
The ancient ocupation of the rocky hill known as the Cabeço de São Pedro is pré-historic. It´sa believe that the settle may date from 300 b.c.
The fortification on that place dates from 1217 when King D Afonso II orders the construction of the Castle.
The Castle was getting abandoned in the XIV century because the place was cold, windy and unpleasant to live. The King D Fernando has tried to solve the problem giving the inhabitants special previlleges but, it didn´t work.
After this crisis, the castle was donated to D. Nunos Alvares Pereira (O Condestável) tho whom was granted the title of Count of Arraiolos.
In 1613 the castle was in an advanced state of ruin.
From 1640 to 1656 it was remodelled for strategic reasons but it soon fell into ruin.
At the beginning of the XX century it was classified as National Monument and all the walls were renewed and fixed.

Castle of Loulé, Loulé, Faro, Algarve, Portugal, Europe
Castle of Loulé is a castle in the municipality of Loulé, in the Portuguese Algarve. Classified a National Monument, since 20 June 1924, three towers remain within the cordon of walls, the remnants of the alcaldaria located within the structure. The Romans first occupied the site, then the remnants of a local castro around the 2nd century, and transformed it into a defensible military fortification and politico-administrative center. In 715, the site was occupied by the Moors. The site was conquered in the 11th century by Ferdinand, King of León, but held for little time. It was definitively occupied in 1249 by D. Paio Peres Correia. Several years later (1268) Afonso III had the area populated after reconstructing and expanding the walls. During this period two of the main towers, including the keep tower, were constructed, but the six gates suggest the existence of other towers (only ruins remain). A foral (charter) was issued in 1266 from Lisbon by Afonso III of Portugal. Between 9–12 April 1359, King Peter I overnighted at the alcadaria. In 1422 or 1462, Henrique de Meneses, 1st Count of Loulé re-built the towers and walls of the castle. A new foral was issued by Manuel of Portugal in 1501. King Sebastian of Portugal overnighted on 29 January 1573. The castle was damaged during an earthquake in 1969. The site was taken-over by the Instituto Português do Património Arquitetónico, on 1 June 1992, under Decree 106F/92 (Diário da Republic, Série IA, 126). In 2001 a protocol was signed between the municipal council and the DGEMN in order to facilitate the protection and conservation of the patrimony in the municipality, that included the castle grounds. This document was supplemented on 18 January 2013 (Diário da República, Série II, 13, Anúncio de Procedimento 232/2013) relative to the remodeling of the Praça D. Afonso III, Rua D. Paio Peres Correia and Largo das Bicas Velhas (Chafariz). The remains of the castle and walls are visible from the roads Rua da D. Paio Peres Correia, Rua das Bicas Velhas, Rua da Barbacã and Largo D. Afonso III, as well as incorporated into the buildings. The majority of the walls are integrated into the buildings of the growing city, outside the perimeter of the original walls.
