Which places in California would you never want to live in?
California is a super cool place to live in many areas. There’s awesome beaches, wide open spaces, mountains, lakes and some of the most stimulating culture around. In fact a lot of places in California seem like the best place in the country.
Then, you’ve got the bad side of California. You know it when you see it. These are the places in California where people are broke, there’s a lot of crime, and frankly, there’s either nothing to do, or it’s rough.
The goal in this report is to talk about those worst cities and towns in California. Now, California is a very liberal place, so you’re gonna find lots of bad places to live just because of that one reason alone. But we’re leaving politics out of this one. For the most part.
So, let’s hop in our car just so we can sit in traffic for hours, as we explore California’s worst places to live.
We begin our journey through the worst places you can live in California in the city of Anaheim.
Now, it’s time to leave the peaceful enclaves of Orange County and hop on the 5 and head on up to our next worst place to live in California, Stockton.
It’s time to head back down the 5, and then take the 10 east as we arrive in the Inland Empire, and our favorite IE city, San Bernardino.
Wanna get away from San Bernardino? Than just head south (specifically take the 10 to the 215 to the 60) and eventually, you’ll find the center of all that is sad and depressing in Riverside County, the city of Hemet.
We’re going to head back to San Bernardino County again, and we’re gonna stop off at our next worst place to live in California, Barstow. To get there, pretend you’re going to Vegas, and then pull over like everyone else does who wants McDonalds or Del Taco.
But guess what Barstow? At least you’re better than your bigger brother, Victorville. In fact, Victorville has nearly 6 times as many people as Barstow does.
Sick of desert towns yet? Cause we’re not even close to being done. Our next stop is another San Bernardino County desert community. So let’s hop on the 10 as we go past Palm Springs and pull into Desert Hot Springs!
Moving on, we come to our third worst place to live in California, East LA. which is...east of LA. It’s also just east of South Central LA.
If you thought Desert Hot Springs was hot and isolated, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. To get to our second worst place to live in California, take the 395 up from Hesperia until you get to Ridgecrest. Don’t stop there, or waste your time at China Lake. Head east until you get to Trona.
Okay everyone. Time for our worst place to live in California. We’ll take the 5 to the 8 and go all the way out to practically Arizona and stop in El Centro.

A Cultural Tale of California’s Citrus Industry
California Citrus State Historic Park in Riverside, CA beautifully preserves one of Southern California’s important historical, cultural and agricultural contributions: citrus farming. In 1873, California’s citrus industry took off when the United States Department of Agriculture mailed two Washington Navel orange trees to Eliza Tibbets, one of the early settlers and founders of Riverside. Word quickly spread of how these trees, coupled with perfect soil and weather conditions in Southern California, produced a sweet and flavorful fruit.
By 1893, Riverside was the wealthiest city per capita in the United States and dozens of new citrus growing communities were created around it – including Rialto, Fontana, Bloomington, Redlands, Loma Linda & South Riverside (now Corona). Citrus farmers flocked to California in what became known as the “Second Gold Rush” and by 1901, there were a staggering 4.5-million citrus trees in California. The industry required a large workforce and immigrant workers quickly filled the need. Native California Indians were among the first to farm the new California Gold,” but anti-Native American sentiment resulted in a decline in the workforce. The Native Americans were mostly replaced by Chinese immigrants, but soon enough – thanks to anti-Chinese sentiment & The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 – they too were replaced. This time, Japanese immigrants filled the void and became the largest of any labor group in the entire citrus industry. However, once again, anti-Japanese sentiment in the United States soon forced them out and they were eventually replaced by Hispanic immigrants.
In the 1920’s, the Cristero War in Mexico – spawned by the imposition of secularist and anti-Catholic articles in Mexico’s Constitution – resulted in hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens immigrating to the United States. They quickly filled the void in California’s citrus industry and soon enough they became the largest labor group in the entire industry. For a small $5 entry fee, you can explore California State Historic Park for yourself and learn more about these immigrant work group’s contribution to Southern California’s cultural and agricultural heritage.

Tartan of Redlands
The Tartan of Redlands was established in April 15, 1964. The restaurant was formerly know as Angelo’s Restaurant and Lounge, and later acquired by the Westen family following the passing of the owner. Many people knew Larry as owner, when in fact he started as a hands-on manager of the Tartan. Our restaurant was originally owned by his uncles, Velmer, Al and Art Croteau. These 3 brothers started it all.
Through such tradition of kindness and friendship, the Tartan became known as the “Cheers” of Redlands. It was the “Cheers” of Redlands, because it is so reminiscent of the famed TV show. It was here you knew you could come for a good drink, a great burger and a well prepared piece of Prime Rib all at a good price. You could walk through the door alone and soon be sitting with friends who also frequented the Tartan. There are always folks there you know. Quite often they are people you enjoy seeing but don’t see anywhere else. And you are always welcome to stop by tables and chat a moment. What a wonderful way to keep up with old acquaintances.
April 1, 2015 the business transitioned to new ownership by Jeff Salamon, an accomplished business man and entrepreneur. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Jeff has served in the United States Marine Corps, Honorable Discharge, and a graduate of National University in San Diego, California with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing.
One of Jeff’s many passions is the continual development and production. He enjoys creating a comfortable, yet efficient atmosphere for customers as well as employees. He enjoys the Tartan atmosphere and the family bond created through such traditions.
Although there have slight changes to our business, one thing has never changed, the Cheers like bond and the love for our customers.

Riverside is a city in, and the county seat of, Riverside County, California, United States, located in the Inland Empire metropolitan area.
